Fantastic video. Highly appreciated. Just have 3 quick questions please: 1) What tape to use to protect paint and windows while applying protecting spray to the top? 2) How to clean and shine plastic rear window? 3) What product was the spray you applied to the paint job after the first layer of protective spray was applied to the top? You called it waterless detailer I guess, but I need exact name to order one online.

@@ziyamikayilov8 Thanks! The tape is just blue painters tape. The window polish is Renovo plastic window polish. Works pretty well, but it's a little fussy. And the spray is from Adam's polishes - Waterless Car Wash. That stuff is great. You can also get his Rinseless wash and just dilute it...

I've been using 303 for years and use 303 Fabric cleaner before applying the sealant . Do it in direct sun on a very hot day with no wind . Rinse the top with straight water then spray the cleaner on and massage it in with a horse hair brush , then let it sit for a few minutes but don't let it dry before rinsing it off completely . Let the roof dry completely then open the roof about a half inch and drape plastic bags all around between the roof , windows and body with tabs of painters tape attached to the body ect.. Lightly close the roof onto the plastic to hold it in place without latching the roof or trapping the plastic in the roof locks , then tape the back window . Spray the 303 protectant onto the main parts of the roof and massage it in everywhere with the cleaned rinsed and dried horse hair brush . Let it dry in the hot sun . Never use soap or high pressure to clean the roof and it should stay waterproof for two years minimum even if it's never garaged . Use cold clean water and a horse hair brush if it gets dirty or 303 Fabric cleaner for stains . Don't use soap . Same applies for boat tops . If you're lazy just clean the roof , rinse it then tape around it and open the doors instead of draping plastic . Sunbrella , Disney and a lot of other parks use 303 on outdoor fabrics as well . You only need one coat if you do it the proper way and one bottle will do two large roofs including a few stain removals and touch ups . They also sell the best dash and rubber protectant product as well as a product for non fabric roofs . Long story but do it right and nothing beats it for performance and lasting power . I don't work for them but have tried a bunch of other products over the years and 303 kicks their butts .

On boats simple is better. Usually you don’t see boats as close as you do cars so it can be pretty forgiving. Painting a 40’ boat can cost anywhere from $20k-$40k by a professional so care of course should be taken. Two coats of sealer in the spring and one wash a month for the summer is all she needs but I’m always chasing water spots.

303 is a non-silicone waterproofing fluid for fabrics. I've only used silicone waterproofers on fabric car soft tops, but it works the same way. One of the problems with older fabric (usually mohair on cars) is that it fades in UV light. But there are specialist dyes (e.g. Renovo Soft Top Reviver) that can be applied after cleaning and before waterproofing, which will restore colour to most fabric roofs.

Hey, I was wondering what's the difference between silicone and non-silicone waterproofers? I've been having trouble finding a silicon-based spray. Majority of Google search results lead me to 303 Fabric Guard (utilized in this video) or RaggTopp. Got any tips? I was told regular fabric guards are dangerous to convertibles since it may damage the roof after it dries, but I haven't found any information online to confirm that. Thank you.

I knew it was important to clean your convertible top thoroughly so the debris wouldn't prematurely destroy it. But...i was not aware of the water protection that 303 or other protectants gave the top to keep it so dry. You definitely don't want a black top fading but the before and after shots were truly amazing. I really don't think most people wet their tops with protectants but rather just spray a light thin coat as per instructions so your results turned out to be much much better. Awesome video.

Interesting I have not used the 303 fabric protector. I may give that a try next time around. I will say something that may help. I typically use those super thin plastic drop cloths for painting to protect the painted and glass surfaces from getting overspray. I just undo the top a little and drape them over the header side windows and tuck it around the rear and close the top back. takes a little more time but less chance of it getting on the paint/glass/ or trim. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the video, I'd recommend washing the car after applying and rinsing off the all purpose cleaner, also more protection than just a strip of tape, this stuff is sticky and hard to remove!

Thank you so much for making this video, Franny...!!! Due to a bit of an unfortunate circumstance, I recently ended up buying a car with a convertible top, which I really wasn't too happy about. I spent far more than I had wanted to on it, as well. Then, to top it all off, when I finally started looking for information on how to care for the canvas top, the individual in the very first video I watched said that convertible tops had to be replaced every 3-4 years. They said it was just a fact of life, and if you owned a convertible, that's what you were in for. After looking into the replacement cost and finding it was going to cost an additional $1,000 or so (once installation was added in), I came down with a severe case of buyers remorse, as you can imagine, upon being told I was expected to spend that much on the car to replace the top every 3-4 years according to the fellow who's video I first watched. To be honest, I was in shock, not being prepared for such news at all. Luckily, the following day, after I had regained my senses, I decided to consult with some others, and came across your video. Hearing that you were doing your demonstration on an original fabric top on a 1995 vehicle was such an enormous relief, I just can't tell you how much of a relief it truly was. Now, I'm looking forward to cleaning and waterproofing the top on my new vehicle, and looking forward to taking care of it and keeping it in good condition, thanks to what you shared. I'm just trying to figure out how to remove the green algae (or moss?), that is currently showing up on it, appearing as a green stain all around the bottom of the rear skirt of the deep blue fabric, and going along up one side a bit. I don't think it's safe to use bleach on the fabric, as that may bleach out some of the color, I'm afraid. Any suggestions on how to remove algae or moss from the fabric, before doing a full cleaning and waterproofing it the top...? Also, do you think 16 oz of the 303 is enough to treat the top, or 32 oz? and how long have you found the waterproofing to last...? Does it need to be done every 6 months...? Once a year...? Thank you so much for your very useful and thorough explanation (plus all the links to where to get the products... big help... and much appreciated...! ) finding this information was such a huge relief, and I'm looking forward to enjoying the car going forward, once again.

Hi Glenn, Congrats on the new car. Convertibles are just the bee's knees :) Depending on where you live and how much rain and such the car will see, once a year is a good place to start. Keeping it clean in between is pretty important even if it is just a soft vacuuming and lint roller. As for the algae, try some car shampoo first. I bet most of it will come out with that and a soft bristle brush. Be gentle as not to pull up the fibers and keep it wet and soapy while cleaning. Rinse and repeat for any additional schmutz. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and let the top dry completely before using the 303 (or RaggTopp if you prefer). Be quick to get any of the 303 off the paint/glass/rubber before it really sets (about 24hrs) and try to do it on a day where the sun can really warm the top. It will look fantastic when you are done :) Good luck!

Hi Frannie nice vid. What you need is STORMSURE it's a gel sealer I get clear in pack of 3 small tubes instead of 1 big. Excell.for those spots on the top or around the plastic window .It's used for boats too. Stuffs fantastic & will stop the loose threading before the hole develops& leaks & save money ! Good luck

Funny how there are so many ways on RU-vid to achieve the same thing. I personally use the 303 in the spray bottle and use a tire detail sponge to spread it out even and get all areas.

Okay this is the poor man's version I washed my top with automotive car wash liquid you get from auto store and the whisk broom that's a little short handled broom then I used my Hoover SteamVac with upholstery attachment to suck off the debris and dirt then I let it dry then I went to Cabela's sports and outfit Thor picked up camp dry it's under ten bucks that 303 stuff costs $30 I don't have $30 I applied that stuff and it works done it a year ago and it it looks fine

I used newspaper and blue painters tape to tape off my windows and painted areas because that 303 Fabric Protector works well but its a bear to get off paint and the windows. Best way to remove it from the windows is to let it dry and take a razor blade to the window, scrapes right off ez.

Should be washing the top IN THE SHADE....if you're worrying about the soap drying too fast. MAKE SURE when you buy the 303 you get the "Fabric Protector" and not the vinyl and rubber protector, 303 makes quite a few different products.

Pretty GOOD!! I have a question that somebody mentioned about 303. Does it over time eat the threading on the top? Have you noticed over a couple years that the threading is becoming frayed? Thank You!!

I've been using it for years and I have not seen any issues with the thread... Scrubbing too hard is really rough on the thread though. You can also try RaggTopp, but I have had better luck with the 303. Just make sure you get it off rubber and paint.

When I clean my top I used a stiff brush and let the natural rain wash it I just went over the whole car not like crazy scrubbing it deep just rubbing the bristles over the top and let the rain rinsed it off I did not put protectant yet on it that's why I'm looking at this video

Isn’t that APC a bit too aggressive for the rubber innerlayer in between the soft parts? Most detailing advise against heavy acidic or chemical products and recommend natural soaps such a green soap

I have another question, unrelated to top. You all are so mechanically gifted I think you may know! So the automatic shift lever is very sloppy, like when moving the PRND321, when you try to go from park to reverse it goes right past reverse to neutral then fiddle with it to get it in reverse. When you go to drive it will land somewhere else like on 3-ya just have to look at indicators to see what it's in. It doesn't move side to side any it's problem is just front to back. You feel notches here and there but not thru each gear as it should. Any ideas? I've always had brand new cars with warranty so I've never had to deal with such task haha.

Hi Eric, Sounds like the detent may be worn or otherwise not working correctly. I have never really seen the mechanism. You might need to disassemble it to get a better look. I would post to some of the forums and see if it is a common issue. Franny

Nice work, I really enjoy your videos! This one in particular was very informative for me. Couple of questions, or maybe a few. You mentioned that you believe that this top is the original '95 so we are looking at a 23 year old top that looks to be in very good condition except for a few wear spots, do you think the wear spots came from the opening/closing process or possibly rubbing on its self while closed? Did this top spend a lot of time closed and that's why it looks so good? How long would you expect a top to last taking into consideration performing an annual treatment and weather conditions? I would expect that a top in lets say CA, AZ, UT, NM, TX to receive so much more sun or maybe a harsher sun to deteriorate much quicker than other parts of the US? What about humidity or lack of, do you think it would be prudent to have some sort of conditioner to keep the top from drying out? You mentioned that you believe the 303 has paraffin wax in it, would leaving the top closed in hot weather for a period of time cause the fabric to stick? Also do you know what year the 911 started using a glass rear window? I am very interest in a '12 - ' 13 911 and I believe these have a glass window. Sorry for the long comment but this video was very useful for me. Thanks again! Donnie.

Have been using Porsche branded convertible top water repellent in a spray can. But it seems to need a reapplication monthly in S. FLA. so I may try 303 next time. Thanks

Yes, and an aerosol tends to go everywhere but the car top.

There are some vinyl polishes out there. I did use one but it was tricky to get completely removed. As long as the scratches aren't deep and all you have is really just a haze they can help. You can also have just the window replaced at a shop if the rest of the top is good. We had this done in our 356 and it was way cheaper than a new top!

I wonder if doing it on a warmer day allowed the fibers to expand a bit more in order for the product to adhere. Can I use this on my face?

We have three scooters. Two Vespas and one Honda Passport. We are original owners of all of them. Franny has had the Honda since college. Funny you ask, we were just talking about them (and a video) today. Heidi

Hey Heidi & Franny! Long time no see! So it's funny this was the first video I have seen of yours, and is now the one I came to for some convertible top help...so we just got an awesome 2003 Saaab 9-3 SE Turbo convertible, it's in awesome condition but it just came a down pour and it's leaking like crazy! It was an old ladies so it has never been sealed. There are a few spots like yours has (tiny tares). So if we seal it will it stop the leaking? Would you know about how much it would cost to replace the top? All the mechanical parts in the top are great it just leaks like crazy!

Well,... the 3.2 Carrera's top was leaking when we got it as well. The under side of the top material should be sealed, but it wears away over time and there just isn't much you can do but to replace it. You can try the 303, but I bet it won't be enough for that. The top itself can be close to $1000 and an install can be that much ore close to $1500. Look for some auto upholstery places around you and take a look at the cars they are working on. The shop that did ours was also working on a Duesenberg so... I have done a few tops but they are a huge amount of work to install. Congrats on the new car! F

@@HeidiandFranny Oh ok, thanks so much for info. Do you know of anything we could put inside it to help absorb some of the water that got in it? I don't know if putting a box of baking soda in it would do anything for absorbing moisture?

@@HeidiandFranny Also are you suppose to wash the soft top everytime you wash the car? Are you suppose to let the top dry before putting it down? When opening/closing top there is a puddle of water on what i think is called the boot (not sure exactly) but it's a vinyl looking thing where the top is stored- is their drain holes in it or does the water just empty in the trunk assuming water isn't suppose to be there... we are just so green with convertible tops! I told Jeff to get 303 and sent him this video, but doesn't like to listen so he went ahead and got spray at walmart that goes on tents and canvas... well that work? He poured water on it and it now beads off like yours did. Thanks bunches!

Unless it is really bad just a light spray to get the particles to lift up on the bubbles and drag a microfiber over it to dry and suck the rest up. I also use a soft brush on the vacuum and that works great. Finally I run the roller over it and it looks brand new. If it is super soiled, then just follow how I prepped with the soft car soap and a soft bristle brush and a soft spray. The 303 is pretty durable, but harsh soaps and lots of grinding will remove it.

Hi great video! Very helpful! I'm going to do my soft top for the first time, I've just bought 303 High Tech Fabric Guard, I'm presuming it's the same product you have used in this video? Thanks for the tip on using a sponge/brush for certain areas. I'm pretty worried as just after purchasing the fabric guard I have read a couple of comments elsewhere that this stuff is so strong it's ruined the stitching on the soft top. Have you had any issues with it since making this video a year ago? Thank you.

I have not seen the comments. Stitching generally fails from sun damage and poor care. The fact that you are making an effort to protect your top will help it. Depending on the condition of your top, I would imagine this product will not perform miracles. I would be more worried about stitching by about leaving a car outside with no protection. If you wonder how often to apply, you will see beading of the water. Once that stops happening, it will be time to apply again. Make sure it is a warm day to help the product set up. Good luck.

I did see a weird reaction on the old MINI with a bit of the 303 that sat on a wide rubber trim piece. It swelled it a little and looked like it was going to leave a mark. After a couple days it disappeared. Try to keep it off any rubber if possible. F

303 will NOT harm the stitching....ive used it on many fabric/cloth tops. If the stitching fails its because its old and worn.

I use rag top on my 997 top. They also recommend doing it in the sun. The only problem is outside the smallest of of breeze blows the spray away from my convertible top. When you used the 303 outside, did you use the sponge or the spray bottle to apply it?

I used that same SOLO sprayer... I know what you mean about the RAGGTOPP. I tried that as well, but like you, I had the same problem that most of it blew away... I think that SOLO is a bit better (The pump sprayer would be the same) because it isn't quite so fine. I think the big trick is a light coat in the warm sun and let it bake a bit in the sun... They say you can roller it as well, but...

I like the 303. It is a little weird to apply, but I really do like it. It comes as a liquid and not a spray so you can control your application better.
