My grandmother was from Mexico and I remember her making a yucca flower dish with tomatoes and onions. I couldn't remember when she harvested the flower for the dish, but you answered my question. The flower gets bitter with time so it must be a tender early harvest. It's not spring yet so I can attempt to cook the early blooms when they come out and duplicate my grandma's dish. Thank you so much.

When I was young we had a family farm in South-Central Kentucky I spent my summers on. Grand Father milked about 15 Cows (by hand) as a supplement to the income (Twice a day milking got about 2 full milk cans, picked up next Morn.), in early spring the wild onions (which here is actually a type of wild Garlic), would be the first to start growing good, the Cows would get into them, and until the onions played themselves out you couldn't sell your milk for the premium price because of the strong Garlic flavor the milk had, it was then used for secondary milk products.

I have enjoyed the blossoms many times. Funny thing is, a few local contractors who were building my home saw me harvesting & enjoying the blossoms, thinking I was a crazy Yank. They claim they had never heard of eating the blossoms. I whipped up a big batch of them as you prepared along with some Chorizo. They loved it and still think I am a crazy Yank. Thanks for the info. I know the feeling with the knives and the edges. Because of this I usually carry at least two knives for this same reason: One I can use for utilitarian purposes, usually a bigger "beater" knife that I don't mind abusing; and the second one a smaller (about 5 inches overall with about 3 inches of plain, non-serrated edge, with a drop point usually, maybe even clip point) blade that I can keep sharper for finer tasks that require a sharper edge and more finesse.

Yeah, I was thinking some of what he was doing would be better with a hatchet. I always bring a hatchet and a heavy duty trash compactor bag in a backpack whenever I'm doing anything in the wilderness, even if it's just a hike or a horse ride with no other goals. Mostly for meat, but both of those can also be useful for shelter or wood gathering.

We Peruvians eat a different kind of Yucca, it's a root also known as Cassava. They can be HUGE as well. We peel the outer bark, boil until tender, and then cut like thick steak fries before frying them. It's really tasty with or without a touch of butter. We live in Ohio now though, harder to find unless I happen to find it frozen at a ethnic food store. As a side note, just saw that Wooded Beardsman (aka Chris) is going to be doing season 3 of the wilderness living challenge with you. Can't wait to see you guys in action together! I hope you're staying healthy and I'm sorry for the passing of your grandmother. I have no grandparents left either so I know what it's like.

Yucca and yuca, very different plants. Be sure never to eat yucca root. I'm going to have to mess with yuca though. Ive no experience with it but hear good things.

Bob Hansler it's very tasty though a pain to prepare from scratch. We celebrate the day Peru declared independence from Spain on July 28th. I always make yuca fries, anticuchos made from marinated beef heart, and some roasted chicken. My one time a year I don't mind slaving over a fire for hours hahaha

Sorry for your loss. When I was little.. I remember my mother talking out loud to her sister. " we don't have anything to eat for supper. What will we do to feed all these children and us? " we drove down the road on the way home. And along side the road we saw these yucca flowers. "Stop!" She said. We all got out and all started to harvest these that looked like they were not on anyone's property. We ate that night the most delicious meal. Jehovah provides. I will never forget that. But we didn't know we could eat the stalk.

So glad to see you and Huck! I am terribly sorry to hear of your loss. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m learning and showing my own grand kids the ways of nature and trying to help them help themselves someday. I know how much I adore my babies and they me and my heart aches for you. I’m sure your grandmother was very proud of you and all you’ve done. If you were my grandson I would be. Thanks for bringing us along. The food this time looked wayyyy better than grubs! Hahaha I was rooting for Huck since there was butter involved, he’s a smart cookie I seen. I’m starting to trust his instincts as much as yours, at least where grubs are concerned! Hahahahaha Again, TFS. You’re in my prayers. God Bless. ~Lisa
