The very first Paul Newman film I ever saw. My (late) Grandfather took Me to see it in 1970 a few years after its initial release (Studios would do that often with movies in those days). It still remains My Favorite Newman film. But purchase-wise, It sounds like this one is going to be a WB $10 End Of The Year Sale for Me. Great Review as Always.

B.S... I've seen this movie on Blu-ray and it looks absolutely stunning!!! The cinematography is amazing and the day lit scenes are beautifully shot. The movie won an Oscar for its cinematography. Images are sharp and crisp. I think the film used is 70mm and the optics were suited for 70mm.. Maybe the Ultra 4K disc the reviewer has had bad source material? 70mm film is more than equivalent to Full HD and Ultra HD.. Yes, it true that some DVDs and Blu-ray and UHD disc were made with bad source material which results in poor viewing quality which makes the film look bad.. This movie is not gritty or grainy, it should be sharp and visually stunning if the UHD disc was made using the restored source material.

Glad to hear your thoughts on this 4K release Jeff, thanks for reviewing this masterpiece. To me, this film has Paul Newman’s best performance and I think he should have won an Oscar for it. Same here. This was my father's favorite Paul Newman film. Lost my father in 2013. When I saw it last week, I had to chuckle remembering us going back and forth saying Strother Martin and George Kennedy's lines.

One of my favorite films from that year. I read the book before seeing this at the theater and it didn't disappoint one bit. So of course I bought the 4k, along with The Maltese Falcon, Rebel Without a Cause, and Casablanca. I'm anxiously awaiting Rebel Without a Cause which is due sometime this week I think. I've already read great things about it and it's one of those films that totally fascinates me every time I watch it. I'm hoping for a Bonnie and Clyde 4k release from the same year as Cool Hand Luke. I realized a couple of days ago I did not have a copy of it in my library and now I hesitate buying the bluray. Not sure how I missed it, but I do have almost 3000 blurays and 4k's in my library now.

Please note: just because a movie or tv show is released on Blu-ray or 4K disc does not mean the movie or tv show will look good and sharp.. I've seen The Lucy Show released on DVD and Blu-ray and it looks horrible, it looks like an 8mm project and this is because the source material used was not restored.. Recently, I stumbled on all 6 seasons of The Lucy Show in its restored format on DVD and Blu-ray and it looks great!! Extremely sharp and color corrected.. Source material was restored 35mm film stock..

One thing I'd like to know is how these 4K discs look if you don't have an HDR display. Given that lots of these are replacing ancient first generation Blu-rays, are these discs watchable by those of us who don't have HDR or do the 1080p discs look better despite the ancient transfers and bad encoding?

Thanks for the review Jeff. I do understand it is not going to be the greatest 4k in my growing collection but I do think it will be one of the greatest movies in the collection. I've been keeping an eye on it for a while waiting for the price to drop - just wee a bit. Amazon UK today dropped the price by £3 so ordering the 4k now. Nice that your link works in the UK as well. I'll get it tomorrow and no doubt we'll be watching it tomorrow evening.

I'd also recommend Kino Lorber's 4K release of 'Nobody's Fool'. Paul Newman is excellent in that as well.

I was looking at this yesterday in Best Buy and I was looking at its rating expecting it to be PG like normal but it seems there’s been an error and it saids GP instead and you can find this mistake on its Amazon listing or physically on the 4K copy

Hey! Big fan of your channel and was wondering if you could help me. I recently got a Sony A95k and HDR streaming and Bravia Core look INCREDIBLE but I just bought some 4K blu rays with a Sony X700 and they look noticeably worse…like the HDR isn’t kicking on or something. Is this a problem with the player, TV settings, or what? I tried turning Dolby vision on and off and that made no difference. I know how good these SHOULD look based on movies I downloaded from Bravia Core, but all the blu rays just look really flat.

@@DarkSideOfTheMoon90 yeah as far as I can tell I’ve adjusted all the settings correctly. It’s not like the blu rays look bad…it’s just that Bravia Core somehow looks so much BETTER. The best way I can explain it is that while the blu rays are HDR, Bravia Core looks like the hand of God came down and personally adjusted the color and contrast of each frame. It’s incredible; like the difference between SDR and HDR. And I was watching 90s movies like Men In Black and Mask of Zorro. Maybe I’m just disappointed the physical media I bought didn’t pop like that.
