What is Your Coolant Reservoir For....
Your radiator cap is designed to keep that pressure under a certain point to keep things from leaking and your cooling hoses popping off or bursting at a high pressure. Once your system reaches operating pressure, the radiator cap will allow coolant to flow past it into the coolant reservoir maintaining the proper pressure. Then once you’ve stopped and your engine starts to cool, the opposite happens. As the temperature goes down and your coolant contracts, it creates a vacuum that can draw coolant back in through the radiator cap making sure your cooling system always stays full of coolant .
If coolant is leaking from your system, you’ll notice that even when your car is warm, the level won’t get quite as high in the reservoir. If you notice this happening in your car, make sure to keep your coolant reservoir topped off to avoid air being introduced into your cooling system. Also, take some time to identify your leak location and fix it quickly.

Mines did same thing, it was combustion gases leaking into coolant. Aka head gasket failure. Poured bars leak in and got coolant on hand to fill when needed, cus at this point I’m broke asf and can’t afford to fix the head or replace engine. Run that bihhh til you can’t no more lol. Just keep coolant in it and don’t let it overheat !

You should have explained the problem more at the beginning of the video. For example show the reservoir full fluid level and the fluid level in the radiator.

I have a Dodge Neon with coolant going into the reservoir and not coming back as well. Had it checked for head gasket problem. Nothing. I have a new, factory radiator cap on it. Nothing comes out of the exhaust. The overflow reservoir is overflowing, and the radiator is low on coolant. How big was the hole in your hose?

It's not used in the way that gasoline or even oil is. The goal is to circulate the coolant to and from the engine to remove heat. So long as you don't have leeks or problems you're not supposed to lose very much coolant. In a healthy system it should take a while before coolant needs replaced

Have you figured out where it was leaking from... i have the same issue on my 2010 FX25... I havent overheated yet, but do notice the coolant doesnt go back into the engine when it cools off. So far ive installed a new Thermostat, will install new Radiator and upper and lower hoses and new Rad cap. I cant see where the leak might be.

I need help. So my water seems to stuck in the reservoir just like the car in the video. But it only happens if i go hard with my car (race on track day, accelerating on the highway, etc). I went to 3 mechanics, one said that i need to replace my head gasket, one said waterpump and the other said that i need to replace my whole radiator. Ive seen on the internet that i need to replace the thermostat and i did, but the water tends to overflowing/stuck in the reservoir again. I also done for compression test and my compression is good. There are also no oil and water mixture in both the water radiator and engine oil (no frothy oil under the cap). So, what's the right thing to do? In my experience with my old '72 GM car, if the head gasket is blown, there is a frothy oil (like cappuccino) under the oil cap and rocker cover (its OHV Engine). My case now is in japanese car ('08 suzuki swift). Please, i need help. Any answers or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

your reservoir when cold "should only be half way filled" this way when it gets hot the fluid can over flow into the reservoir...........if it goes not suck back into the engine as it is needed,there is a vacuum leak in a line or hose .this can be a very small leak so check carefully every hose and clamp............................i have found that when engine is cooling off a antifreeze drip is easier to spot.

Check the small hose which connects the reservoir and radiator. Lots of cars don't have a clamp on the connection where this hose meets the radiator. $1 clamp will do the job.

TheTeddy214 So why the reservoir doesn’t fill back the radiator I have the same issue I think they are two different issues Coolant leak The reservoir doesn’t drain/fill back the radiator
@CoroPlanesLLC
@CoroPlanesLLC 5 лет назад
That can happen for a number of reasons. If you have air in your radiator, the air compresses as the car heats up. Then, when the car cools off, the air inside the radiator expands and a vacuum is never created so fluid can not be drawn into the radiator. Another reason could be a failed radiator cap. Or you could have a leak some place high in the engine, and as the engine cools, it draws air from the leak rather than the reservoir. A pressure tester will help you track down your problem.

Tom Rassier Thanks Tom 04 Honda Civic has an odd Passed cooling pressure test. Held pressure for 10 min without drop Passed combustion test ( the blue color liquid didn’t change color) Smooth drive at 90 mile per hour Yet the coolants goes on one way to overflow tank and over filled and then get low on coolant and overheat. There’s air in the system but it happened to get it all more than one time and did the same.

Do your hoses get firm when you start the car but before the engine warms up? Do the hoses get firm when the engine is warm? The hoses should firm up has the engine comes to operating temp. If they are getting firm before that, there is a problem. Also, if they never get firm, you may have a bad radiator cap. The cap is designed to allow fluid to pass by into the overflow bottle, and return to the radiator. If the cap is malfunctioning, it may be letting fluid out into the overflow, but then allowing air to return via the damaged cap. I have never run into the problem you are describing without a intake or head gasket leak. Did you test the cap to see if it holds pressure to it's designed limit, then vents it if you go past that limit? Radiator cap should hold about 16lbs (108kpa) (1.1bar) of pressure. Good luck... Without going hands on, I'm afraid I am out of ideas.
