I am an amputee on my right leg below my knee! I can't walk without a cane! It almost makes me want to sit around the house and go no where!

42 years as a left bk. Difficult at first, but my physiotherapist had no time for self pity. I just retired after 31 years as a Manager for a crown corporation, married with 4 children who are my greatest pride, including my 3 grandkids. My wife has supported and pushed me over the years, and I love her deeply for this. Lately, looking back, I never really focused on just how big a change this was. Unfortunately I’ve had chronic intractable pain, but I’ve not let it stop me from having a satisfying life. Great video.

I lost My right leg below the knee, a year and half. And it's very hard journey. There's time I feel depressed. And there I want to learn more for myself...

A 12 hour lidoderm patch immensely helped my pain from the prosthesis allowing me to push the ambulating threshold.

awesome video. I can relate to a lot of this- my life changed after my double knee surgery- not an amputation, but still a surgery that really altered my life. thanks for your experience strength and hope.

I became an AKA at a young age, 47 years ago. I have no memory of running - its fantasy. I wasn't bullied (much) as a kid but no one said anything close to "you're doing great". Kids are honest; people get more fake as we age. I just try to walk the best I can and hope I am a good model as an amp.

How are things going for you now?! Have you met any other amputees that you could talk to and help with adjustment?!

@@BremerProsthetics I've arranged both RHEO and C-Leg4 trials over the next month. I have also trialed the VGK (8/10), the Ossur Paso (dangerous), and the OB 3R60 (7/10). Next up is an Ossur RHEO 3 ($$$). I have no issues with "getting along" as an amp after 48 years, but I wish there were more techie resources for AKAs.

@@hwmbo727 You are an inspiration to me. I'm 18 and i am dealing with a limb salvage chronic infection and hearing that other people out there like me with limb differences are at least doing OK is very reassuring, especially after being told I will most likely amputate.

@@kashcotI lost my lower left leg for exactly that reason. I was 20 when, after 3 years, osteomyelitis made it impossible to keep it. After I lost my leg, my pain from walking was gone, and I wasn’t being rushed to the hospital every month as I no longer had systemic sepsis occurring. Hard choice to make, but they make great legs now. Good luck.

To this post, I am not shy at all about my leg. The biggest cringe I get is so many in the community focus on, you have to be an extraordinary-extreme athlete etc. etc. I just want to be extraordinarily ordinary. (And I am). Those that start telling me all about how it is to be an amputee. They watch too much tv.

I’m 72 years old and I had my right leg amputated below the knee in March of 2023. I developed a couple of wounds that were not healing because I had bad blood circulation down my leg. My surgeon told me that she would have to amputate my leg again above the knee. I immediately became curious about learning about being an amputee and how to get ready for a prosthetic leg and learning how to walk again. I looked at all kinds of videos about the subject and I am very proud of being able to walk again. I use a walker but I have recently gotten a new socket for my prosthesis. I need to have a larger socket and it has made all the difference in the world. I am aspiring to change to a cane. It’s a process but I am a retired Marine and I’m not used to saying I can’t do something. I will do it….eventually!!!!✝️👍👏👏👏🥹

I am a amputate and it has been 2years with several changes to it but I have a pertruding bone at the top of my stump where the skin adhered to the bone and the prosthetic is so heavy and uncomfortable. I want to wear it but it is not working for me. Can you help me find peace and comfort

Try to find a good physiotherapist who specialises in amputees. Mine helps me physically and emotionally. Definitely start some exercises to strengthen your good leg and your residual limb. Is your prosthesis uncomfortable to wear? Go back to your prosthetist. Stay positive, you can do this.
