Hunter, first time seeing this, but wow! Great stuff. Very clear and concise. My question: Is it buff-able? Before you put on the final protective coat, can you put this under a soft cotton wheel with some rouge and get the copper to shine a bit more?
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 5 лет назад
Hey Will! Glad you "stopped by" :) The answer is yes. You can certainly use different techniques for buffing and get a similar result. Further buffing like you are describing would definitely make it shine up more. If you give it a try let me know how it goes! ~ Hunter

So I think I've watched every video you've made now and I can't wait to try my hand at this. This year my daughter shot her first doe and I want to try and carve something similar to this video with also inlaying her initial similar to another video of yours. My question is patterns. It seems every video you start with the perfectly sized and laid out patterns that you transfer. Any tips you can give a rookie on making these patterns? I have about a dozen skulls now to play with and practice to try and make her perfect. Thanks again for the great videos and turning me on to this great New way to display our trophies
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 5 лет назад
Hey man! That's great! Sounds like you like you got your work cut out for you haha. Well, I guess after doing it a few times you get better at it but honestly the way I get it to fit right is just trial and error. Meaning, I will print the design out and see how much I am off, then try and print it off in a different setting (Like when you print you can shoose different layouts and sizes), and then if that is still not working I will open it up in Paint and resize till I get it right. That means I might print off a few different pages till the disgn fits right. Hope that somehow helps haha

This idea might be a bit of a stretch but have you thought about doing fillings? As in pouring liquid aluminum into a skull, letting it harden, and then breaking the skull off to see the shape inside. I don’t know if it would work sense I’m not sure how hot skulls can stand but assuming it works, you could probably get some interesting shapes and maybe build new ideas off it. I would also get Twitter. Hope this helps!

Where do you get clean, intact deer skulls? Are they usually provided by different hunters, a specific company, or do you clean them yourself? I want to get into skull/bone carving but deer skulls seem quite expensive for a student with little income.
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 6 лет назад
Hey man! Yeah so most of the ones you see here are customer skulls that they provide to me (and agree to let me use for videos). I have had quite a few people simply give me deer skulls because they know that I like to carve them. But, take a look at this first, and then see if that helps usskullhunter.com/find-animal-skulls-locally-skull-carving-free/ if after trying these ideas nothing works let me know and we can probably brain storm some more ideas that will work :)

I concur with Mike Hubbard, have you considered mixing the powder with a clear epoxy? and then scraping it into the void? could save yourself a whole bunch of powder and sanding too......
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 5 лет назад
Well yes, problem with that is it's actually a lot harder to get the paste into the design and you end up wit lots of voids that you then have to repair and that takes up time. So yes you can, but you are not necessarily saving time in the end.

Yes, per hour. I charge $40 per hour right now. I usually take a deposit up front and then the rest when it's finished as each skull is different.

Lovely job ,perhaps you are unaware that you need to credit the artist whose design that is, after of course getting their permission to use it.

Thanks Mary! Yes, very aware, this was a custom design I paid to have done. If you follow me on my IG or Facebook you will see where i link to the artist. The guy who did the design even shared the video :) I will add a link in the video though just so no one else gets confused. Thanks for watching!
