Today we revisit CopperCube, an easy to use 3D game engine. They just released version 6.6 adding Dark Mode among other new features. Available completely free on Windows (will work under Wine) and capable of building games for Windows, Web, Android and Mac, CopperCube is one of the easiest game engines available.

You probably need to edit the comment to change "We did a tutorial on GameGuru that should get you up and running quickly:" I think you wanted to write CopperCube there, instead of GameGuru. heheh :)

As someone who has used this software before I can confirm it's pretty fun. There are different types of people with different opinions on it. Some see it as easy, free fun, others see it as a bug-infested hellscape. This engine truly does have a reputation amongst gamers. But the truth is this is one of the best engines you can use, some games made using this engine even end up on Steam. And the truth is, it's kind of an underground community that only a small amount of people know about, that's what makes it fun, knowing that the community is always innovating in the engine, even making multiplayer games. 10/10, would recommend to bored, unemployed mateys who got not much to do.

They should do a fan-patch, where fans can add their own things that could make CC comparable to engines such as Unreal. My ideas include: · Ability to import Source models and maps · .mp3 support · View model sway and ability to grab objects, which I saw in a CC-related video · Manual · Ability to make better vehicles, so that it can be more than a mesh controlled by a keyboard and a TPS camera

It's good that Niko continues the development of this game engine. A long time ago I worked with his open source Irrlict, graphics engine on which CopperCube is built. Unfortunately, as far as I can see today Irrlicht isn't popular and doesn't seem to be developing much since the co-creator went closed source with CopperCube. Unfortunately, the graphics look at the level of more than 15 years ago.

Tried it after watching this video. Could not get terrain lighting to work in Direct3d, had to switch to opengl on W11. Default tank controls for 3rd person are rough, but community made third person plugin works really well though. Game view at one point in the main window would get smaller over time and leave cool Windows 98 tile effects for some reason. Integrated intel graphics causes it to crash after a few minutes. Other than those things, played around with the demos and examples, seems ok to tinker with.

@andreluis2488 Год назад
Coppercube is very easy to use and can to do excellent graphics, but you need to know how to extract the maximum of the engine. If you use good models, and to know how to use the lighting and shadows, you can reach results next to Godot or Unity!

Coppercube just need some more code based tutorials in case people want to use traditional coding for some of their game logic. Because, sometimes getting the results one wants could actually be more difficult and time consuming when using their visual scripting.

If people can get a grasp on the concepts with tools like this that's great, but the truth is that I still wouldn't recommend this to newcomers. There's Unity or Godot videos all over the place.
@Aeroxima
@Aeroxima Год назад
I think it depends on how much easier it is. I would go with Unity myself (and do use it), but sometimes you have to know what you're trying to do, where to look, like you're looking at deeper details and somebody could be a bit lost without having a more overall perspective of what all's going on. Like trying to identify (or paint) a picture when it's just way too zoomed in. Something easier could help understand where to even look or what features are more core or important, without getting lost in the smaller implementation details. The same is true of a simple art program vs one with tons of features, and somebody might not know where to even begin because there's just too many and too specialized of tools. That being said, Unity isn't that hard, so like I said, it depends how much easier it is and how much more quickly somebody can get something up and running. I find with Unity I start a lot of projects and get really into implementing a particular feature, while the game is overall simply not playable. Some of that is on me because I'm picky though, but even using a lot of premade assets for code/functionality, even if a lot of work is done for you, each one has its own little learning curve still. Sometimes I wonder whether I'd be better off just coding smaller things myself, rather than learning and implementing yet another bit of code that doesn't look like the rest of the project and worrying about having to possibly fix bugs in somebody else's code, where I might not quite understand the way they were going about things. I think there's a lot of value in having something up and running quickly and getting that motivation boost, rather than putting in 100 hours and still looking at a daunting mountain feeling pile of stuff to be done just to get what you thought would be "the basics". It's easy to give up before you have something minimally playable, if you're not mindful enough about it. But you can also work around it and be more purposeful with where you start, but that might be more difficult if you just have no idea where to start or how stuff generally works.
