Coriolis is a lie, easily disproven by a gyro. Your confusion was you didn't think the lie was correct, and rightly so. Do some more research on gyroscopes and what they can prove, you will be surprised! No one uses it on long range shots either. ITS A LIE.

I wish I could upvote this a million times. I've watched several videos on Coriolis and they only mention low pressure systems, nothing about the highs. It makes so much more sense when taking the perspective of wind direction into account! Thank you!

Summary: 1. Earth's (eastward) velocity is highest at equator (zero at axis/poles). 2. Things (e.g. wind) move from high to low pressure. They tend to retain their velocity (highest eastward near equator). That explains all curves/spinnings in this beautiful video,

A common thought, but remember that both the helicopter and balloon are controlled by the atmosphere which is also rotating. A helicopter pilot will also use the Earth as a reference in flight. It is not just the solid portion of the Earth that is spinning; the at atmosphere and oceans also move. Much of the circulation of the atmosphere and oceans is caused by the Earth's rotation.
@truenorthpublisher682

I'll comment twice but to Blakefor8, he's talking about trying to hover over one spot, where as in the Coriolis Effect, they're talking about objects that are moving while the earth rotates. So to hover, the pilot is keeping the helicopter in the same location, right or wrong?. Also one more thing to remember is, the earth is rotating at 15 degrees per hour, so the N & S Poles would be different than the equator would be. Not to confuse people but that is why Pilots have adjustments that need to be in account when they are flying in certain directions for longer periods of time. They can't fly straight, they have to have a flight angle.

The diagram is correct. The winds in the Southern Hemisphere will curve to the left, while North of the Equator the winds will curve to the right. As these winds meet near the Equator they will be blowing in the same direction. This area is known as the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ.

@SpartanEarthScience , Thisis a fine explanation of what Mr. Coriolis was thinking..I love my Celestron telescope , and have 'thrown~out' so many bologna-ass 'theories" some folks come up with trying to understand and explain to someone else how the mechanics of this actually affects things. I've had the Telescopic Instrument from when I spent the $1200.00 for the thing back in 1994. Keeping it real. The planet Jupiter is the perfect example of the Coriolis Effect. Our planet Earth is the example we all have to contend with.Thank-you for this video :)-Foxx. . =^.^=

Newton's 1st law says an object in motion stays in motion, so just saying that objects curve because the earth is spinning is inaccurate because the earth spins everywhere so it would seem to cancel out in your force equation. However, the precise way to convey the effect it is that the earth spins at different velocities depending on an observer's relation to the poles. The velocity vector of an object at the equator is greater than an object at the poles. An object like a bullet retains the velocity vector from its origin as it moves through space, and since the origin velocity vector is different than its destination velocity vector (either northward/southward trajectory), it curves from the observer's perspective.
@brianbarnard690
@brianbarnard690 6 лет назад
Your first point is accurate; the Coriolis effect is an _apparent_ curve. I'm confused about what is canceling out and what force equation you are referring to. There is no need to bring up velocity vectors, either original or the destination to explain the Coriolis effect.

The Coriolis effect is only due to the latitudes, isn't? So if one were to bomb a city on equator from another on equator, one need consider only the actually distance over land. Is it so?

If pressure at 30 degree north is lower than that at 60 degree N then how come the wind blows away from the 30 degree N to 60 degree N. Cause this seems to contradict with the fact that the wind blows from the 30 degree N ( Higher pressure) towards the equator ( lower pressure)
@fakherhalim
@fakherhalim 7 лет назад
You are right. All objects move from higher to lower pressure. 60 degree N wind, moving towards equator will have lower original eastward component and move towards west while approaching lower latitudes. I find right and left definition (in place of east and west) very confusing!
@rainbirdp
@rainbirdp 9 лет назад
Rather than say the wind is curving to the right or left, why not just say that the wind curves either in the direction of the spin of the earth (eastward) or opposite the direction of the spin of the earth (westward). Left or right is relative to your perspective, but the spins of the earth is a constant. Also, how is it that the Coriolis effect causes wind to curve westward (clockwise) in the tropical storm zone of the N. Hemisphere, yet hurricanes spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.
@SpartanEarthScience
@SpartanEarthScience 9 лет назад
Douglas, Great questions. Using left or right is easier for my high school students to use so they don't have to think of the added information about which way the Earth is spinning. It also doesn't work, using the "spin of the Earth" method. Imagine air flowing South in the Northern Hemisphere; it will appear to curve to the West (opposite the Earth's rotation) but air traveling North will appear to curve to the East (with the Earth's rotation). Right or left are relative to your position, so I try to emphasize that; it is a very important point. To answer your question about hurricane (and other low pressure systems) rotation see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Un2bMX2RnXE.html
@rainbirdp
@rainbirdp 9 лет назад
SpartanEarthScience But the constant in wind direction is the spin of the earth whether the air is flowing North or South and curves to the east or west. East and West are actually the same as "with spin" or "opposite spin" of earth. As you point out, air flowing North appears to curve Eastward (toward spin of the earth) and air flowing southward in N. Hemisphere, appears to spin Westward or opposite spin of the earth. Both of these effects are due to Coriolis effect. When air (or any object) flows from a higher speed latitude to a lower speed latitude, the air will appear to flow with the spin of the earth. If air flows from a lower speed latitude to a higher speed latitude, the air will appear to flow opposite the spin of the earth. That general principle will work in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere.

Unfortunately, Spartanearthscience, Has just outlined the problem with our education system. THERE is not enough time, with so few teachers, to fully explain complex thought problems; THEREFORE we must take shortcuts just to get the future factory workers to PASS the class so that the teachers and school systems can maintain their FUNDING ...... because life is all about the money now isn't it !?!?!? WE CAN"T AFFORD To take time truly helping these kids understand that angular momentum and conservation of energy are some of the OTHER concepts that will help to clarify the Coriolis effect. Now instead of just complaining I will suggest showing slow motion videos of Skaters doing spins with arms out and then pulling the arms in to speed up, If your School has a swimming pool you can get inner tubes for the students to lay across..... spin them a little then tell them to pull their arms and legs in - it will be an obvious and very personal, REAL, physical ExPERIENCE of the Coriolis effect.

Question :how do you explain when river or air flow from west to the east ?
@SpartanEarthScience
@SpartanEarthScience Год назад
Rivers flow downhill and are not affected by the Earth’s rotation. Air moves (wind) from areas of higher air pressure to areas of lower air pressure.
@真探-o6i
@真探-o6i Год назад
@@SpartanEarthScience I mean, moving from east to west can also have coriolis force phenomenon, but it's not explained by this model, objects moving at the same latitude are similar as moving in a circle, but why there are coriolis force phenomenon, I think you have to think about gravity. Gravity is a very important factor, but it is ignored by many people, I think they are wrong, can only explain formally, not fully understood, coriolis force is not equal to geostrophic force.
@真探-o6i
@真探-o6i Год назад
@@SpartanEarthScience I have a model to think about it. Imagine a ball of yarn that diverges in the center. When it spins fast enough, the ball becomes flat, simulating the motion of a river or atmosphere on its surface. Coriolis can only explain part of it.The binding force from the center is deflecting the motion.
