My daughter who is 6 just got one today. She accidentally poked her eye very badly. Took her to the urgent care and they confirmed it. It's right in the middle of her eye. I'm scared since she's also nonverbal. 😔

Hi, great question - my answer is a firm NO! I actually wrote an editorial on this in the Annals of Emergency Medicine a few years ago: www.annemergmed.com/article/S0196-0644(19)30335-X/pdf We polled cornea specialists on a cornea email chain and not one cornea specialist would prescribe or use topical numbing drops as treatment for a corneal abrasion. There have been so many times that I've seen a routine abrasion turn into a cornea ulcer or melt with permanent loss of vision. No matter how many times we tell our non-ophthalmology colleagues about this, it still happens all the time :(
@@MicheleLeeMD This Optometrist also 100% disagrees with the use of topical anesthetics for abrasions. Those corneal erosions that occur when patients steal/beg/acquire the drops from Urgent Care/ER/Docs Office are nasty! Speaking from experience on this one. And more than once, unfortunately!
I have an interesting case. I have Marfan syndrome. As a result, I’ve had 4 retina detachments and two lens surgeries to remove my lens in both eyes. I get cornea abrasions frequently; maybe once a week. (Surprisingly, I have never had an infection).I usually get a serious abrasion 4 times a year, meaning both my eyes are closed shut for a whole week to heal. My cornea specialist and retina surgeon think the cause of the abrasions are due to my surgeries. They think that my eyes don’t close at night as a result of the surgeries. When the eye doesn’t close, dry air enters, thus the abrasions. I’ve seen 4 cornea specialists and all have said there is nothing I can do. I refuse to accept this answer. I will continue to find solutions as my abrasions are extremely painful.
I'm so sorry to hear about your eye issues ❤ if you are waking up with eye pain and abrasions, have you tried using various over the counter ointments at night like muro-128 or other artificial tear ointments?
Corneal abrasion from scratch, and developed ulceration... antibiotics & steroid drops (3 weeks) - never heard of this before... its aweful. Muro 128 first time today...

Hi Dr Lee, I had a corneal abrasion about 3 weeks ago now and have been on antibiotics since I got it. According to my eye doctor, the inflammation is gone, but the blurry vision in that eye still persists. Is it normal for the blurry vision to persists and if so, is there a time frame it can last until? Thanks
Hi there, I am also suffering the corneal abrasion and it is on Day 12 from initial set. Still blurry vision around text and people's faces regardless of the distance. How about you? Have you healed completely?
Hi I need help Thursday I had an accident where my friend ran into me with a broom so it hit my right eye Like when I look with the injured eye it's a bit blurry is that normal? Also the swelling is gone it's just my eyelid can't stay open for long periods of time
Yes, the wrinkle on my eyeball went away in a few minutes, but the eye remanded red for some time. Wrinkles will happed if you rub too hard. My eye doctor told me not to rub them and just wash it out when itchy. Good luck@@user-hb1vl5bk4e
I'm so sorry to hear about your abrasion. The blurry vision should get better with time (over a few weeks). If the eye is still blurry, you should get an eye exam to make sure there is nothing else going on with your eye.
