76mm M93 APCR (4.2kg, 1.8kg tungsten carbide core) at 1000 m/s
vs
Tiger hull front armor (102 mm RHA at 25 degrees / 60mmm RHA at 10 degrees)
76mm M1A2 muzzle velocity (APCR) - 1036 m/s. 1000 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 0.2 km.

In the Finnish tank museum there is a KV-1 (1942 model) that has a dent from a soviet 85mm round that hit this exact spot shown in the video. And like the apcr in this video it failed to penetrate the armor. It's just a neat fact. You can go see it yourself if you decide to visit the place :)

Funny you mention that, in the Armored vehicles museum in Saumur France there is a tiger with an impact in the same spot, and it also failed to penetrate. Don't remember what hit it though.

in movie Tali-Ihantala they made the scene where KV takes that hit you mentioned, they didn't use real KV in the movie but it's still good Re-enactment of how it happened

Nope, he would just hear a loud thump, and in this specific case there wasn't even any deformation in the plating. If crews shat their pants, blew their eardrums and got concussions with every hit, then there would be a lot more talk about it in the hundreds of memorials out there. But from what we know, even a direct 152mm impact isn't enough to make them lose their focus.

@BKBCrAnK that's partly due to inexperienced, untrained crews I imagine. Same sort of thing happened in the Tiger II.

@@johnhighway7399 I mean arguably a 152mm to that spot would definitely incur some pants shittery. 152mm was enough to full on crack the glacis of a panther and according to testing would generate significant spalling when striking the glacis of the Tiger II, even tho it didn't penetrate

that's why glacis thickness matters, even when it's a rare hit. Hey could you simulate a similar shot with something like a pak 40 against a kv-1s? As from what they know they had reduced thickness in that part compared to regular kv-1 tanks

He did a edge shoot video of KV-2 against a pz4. Not same, because Kwk40 has less powder and the hull armor of the KV-2 could be different but you get the idea.

Interesting but i think if it hit a little lower it wouldnt have normalized so much and penetrated into the interior of the tank Would be interesting to see this same simulation put with the impact about 1 inch lower so the projectile is more aligned with the interior seam of the top and front armor

The compressive stress of armor gives force to the projectile and it starts moving to the direction where the resist is minimized. It’s simple Newtonian principle of Action and Reaction, and Dynamic Equilibrium, but also profound and fun

Knew it was going to deflect If the shot was ever so slightly lower it would have easily went through and gotten either a full pen or a partial pen.

A perfect 90º corner armor on a tiger side (the upper armor above the tracks and the flat upper hull side) . Thats one thing i would love to see. Right iin the middle of the joint

i find im always cheering for the non-existent crew's survival, or lamenting their demise on pens. or occasionally the grave and maiming wounds suffered by spalling. on people that arent even represented by pixels. lol

This bullet hit an extremely angled side of the armor and could not penetrate the armor. Even if it penetrated the armor from the same point, the bullet would not be able to penetrate the transmission because there would be a transmission behind it and the crew would not be harmed.

You have failed every single American on the planet if you find yourself being a gunner in a Hellcat, one of the few early TDs capable of confronting a Tiger frontally, and yet you still somehow managed to hit one of the few areas of a Tiger that you cannot penetrate from just 200m away. There's baseball pitchers that could aim more accurately.

Real life is not a game where you can use the mouse to target a weak spot in a second. Especially when a tiger appears around the corner and you know you will die if you are late. btw, I have already shown perfect conditions for this ammunition, Ferdinand armor

In ww2 it was somewhat common to see a tank and just aim to not miss, not aim to hit a specific place
