I faced such poisonous culture when i was a fresher early on in my job.. Decided to quit and apply for higher studies.. I don't know if it was the right decision to quit but I still get nightmares and flashbacks of how a human can be treated @workplaces
People are treated badly at workplaces because they know that you are earning your bread and butter from them , all you need to do is create your own sounds of income for your bread and butter and then you will not rely 100% on these jobs for your livelihood therefore you can go and do the job and if anybody treats you badly you can treat them bad too, even if you loose your job who cares as you already have your own source of income
I agree with you about Academia being a better place but going through the rigor of a phd program is not easy either. There are advisors who exploit international students and are no different from corporate bosses. This happens more often than people would like to acknowledge. The graduate student is at the bottom of the university food chain.
Yes that is very true. I have witnessed first hand what you are saying. It demonstrates my bias if anything. I was blessed with the greatest adviser and therefore my experience was class apart. I saw some students go through extremely difficult times because of their bad advisers.
I’m on the same journey as you. Have been used and abused by an Indian consulting company. Been forced to violate US labor laws and visa rules just so they could make a pretty dime and throw me a little pittance just to keep me alive. I left that job three years ago and started a PhD in the EU at the age of 29. Best decision of my life so far. I wouldn’t have lasted another month on that job. Either would’ve burned out or landed in jail. Or both.
We cannot thank you enough for sharing your life experiences so candidly and giving away these Jewels of Wisdom. Hope folks are paying attention and taking action.
I hope someday in future you talk to corporates on how they can be empathetic with their employees and be more inclusive and become a great place to work.
Thanks professor for sharing your life experience with us. :) It's so unfortunate that I'm working with such a professor who has screwed me over and over again. He never allows me to write a paper to maintain absolute control. By absolute control meaning adding high school and undergrad interns in my papers without any contributions at all, giving someone else my work's credit, delegating my ongoing work to someone else for tiny misunderstanding and making them lead authors. He has not tenured yet. I am not sure why he's conducting his lab this way. Maybe his work pressure? I too, was too timid to change my supervisor, now it's the end of 4th year with him. I decided not to go to academia for two reasons i) I don't know if I would start acting like him if I start as a fresh faculty member ii) his vendetta against me has made my PhD research profile too weak. I sincerely pray to god that may my future supervisor be a good one!
I am from US in the field of engineering and I know the culture. But I must say that your concerns are a little bit overstated. You do get paid a lot in industry compared to faculty positions in universities. In return of that payment you agree to submit yourself to your boss's whims. However, in company they are very particular about your hours and you are not supposed to work beyond your normal work hours. If you have a project which needs you to work beyond normal hours and you are not allowed to overcharge, you need to talk to your boss. You also lose the right to publish anything while in the company because company has the right on the information. So I am little surprised how you could publish while being in the industry which is a big thing.
Dr. Sambhara, totally echo your thoughts here. These are global practices everywhere in the world somehow and this is the brutal truth about the corporate jobs. Being in the learning and development industry for 10+ years and having worked with some topnotch organizations in India, I can totally relate to your experiences. These jobs have also given me a glimpse of the seemingly greener side (of what clients go through at their corporate positions in US, Canada, Germany and other countries). It's all very twisted and disturbing. Thanks for making this video because it helps to re-affirm that my own perceptions are not wrong all together. Thanks.
Can totally relate to this through my elder brother's stories! I believe it's the power the H1b visa gives the employer over international employees. Since they know we can't change jobs without being at the risk of leaving the country permanently and hence won't quit at our own mercy 90% of the time, they completely utilise that opening.
I have seen this In US also but it 99% happens when you work full-time with Indian leadership's in USA and engineers are exploited in the name of GC processing when you work in H1B..
Interesting perspective professor. Teaching is a calling. Same thing happened with me too working overtime meeting deadlines in the end when I quit I had same question on my mind. By then i had worked 2.7 years and 40 projects and made a huge code database that they could reuse and also had build good relations with clients. Had to leave everything cannot put everything on paper.
I am Supratik from India. I also faced corporate abuse in India as a fresher for last two years. I quit before lockdown to prepare for govt jobs like SSC CGL and UPSC. Thanks to China now I have a lot of time to prepare and bag a secured job.
This is normal behavior. I was born here and companies don't want to pay for overtime because it will affect the budget. The main thing is understand how to manage your stakeholders.
Very Nice Sir . Love you Sir . Excellent explanation with very powerful communication & representation with very genuine talk . Touch my heart deeply . God Bless you Sir . 🙏🙏🙏
I am working in Mumbai as application support from 5 years. Just see what we are getting. 1.Having 9 hour's of work, some time sitting extra without paid. 2.Only 1 week off in weeks and 14 emergency leave in year. 3.No pf, no mediclaim, no hra also working in very less salary. 4.Sometimes unnecessary escalation from client side after that TL and manager. I am average student and don't want to do job in this field but no option.
It's depend on ur manager and client. Cuz till now I worked in 4 projects in Capgemini mumbai for 4 yrs. There also sometimes to complete project within deadline I worked 12-15 hrs. Bt till now it happened only thrice. And all times our deadline was next day. Bt if it is happening many times and at our side if we as an employee doing great and error less work that means it's problem of company and higher authorities. Switching is the best option then.
After B.tech i was on my internship as a project manager at Escorts limited in Faridabad and everyday i used to work from 9am to 9pm and i don't know if i got free before. But yeah sometimes i worked till 11pm also. I didn't complain bcz i thought it's normal in india and everyone do this 😆 but after listening u now i got to know in america if u work more than 40 is really difficult thing for people And also thank u soo much for ur information sir i got to know about PhD alot and I'm coming USA for MS in texas A&M University college station. I hope I'll meet u in texas and get to know about how to become a successful researcher.
I was not complaining about longer hours. I was not an employee, I was a contractor. If an employee works harder they get promotions and all. Contractors have no such incentives. If a contractor works more than 40 hours, they must be paid for overtime. Forget overtime, they never paid me a penny beyond 40 hours even though on numerous occasions I put in 60-80 hours a week
I joined a company - they lured me to getting me green card etc etc BS. I was asked question - why did you not graduate from Stanford. expected me to work hard throughout. work was good, fun! then they put me and rest under a narcissist manager who did not get along with anyone. he bullied everyone. after 3 years of abuse I resigned. by that time , they realised I was right and others were wrong. they gave me a job in another country , fired that white narcicist manager. everyone was running behind money , money and more money. worst experience. this time I have a better manager. I think you need to find the right employer and manager. ask them how supportive they are. it comes with experience!
great pivot moment story of how you choose education vs corporate work ,you had better communication and also awareness very young age vs many others who dont and are trying to figure out whats their own journey ,btw you share your name anywhere or prefer anonymous
Chaitanya; Foreigners working on work visa for American Corporations, start out with a disadvantage. Their flexibility of job hopping is very limited. A US citizen will not, and does not have to put up with working but not being paid for overtime, that you put up. To not pay non-exempt employees the overtime is against the law. Walmart was sued for that, and they had to pay all the owed overtime salary payments. And I understand that your message is for foreigners, but not every foreigner is suited for becoming a faculty member either. Being a professor, even in a community college, requires writing skills of top level (can survive without one, but not pleasantly). Not everyone has such top level writing skills. So what should a foreigner, non ph. D., or not cut out for faculty position do in America? Well, you can work for a non-profit organization. They will not pay you much, but they would obey the law and will be very pleasant. Of course there are not too many STEM jobs with non-profits. Then as a foreigner, you do not have an option, other than working for an American or foreign Corporation in America. Then, you have to gently take the abuse, try to get them to reward you (needs great communication skills), and bide your time until you get your green card. That gives you mobility, and yet no political power. You get political power, only after becoming a US citizen. And I can relate. I hate working for industry as well. But I am a ph. D. Engineer. I became a tenured Professor. The dark side industries have is, that an employee is treated like a "day trader". If your day's trade did not make money, then your worth immediately drops to bottom. If you do not let that hurt your sense of being a human, then you can survive, in an environment, which for humans, deriving self-worth mostly from work success, can quickly become toxic. And Of course, these are the celebrated sayings in America, which are telling: "As a Hollywood director, you are only as good as your last movie". "As a community college professor, you are only as good as your last class lecture:. "As a university professor, you are only as good as your last research paper, or last grant you brought". "As a novelist, you are only as good as commercial success of your last novel". "As a pianist, you are only as good as commercial success of your last concert". "As a painter, you are only as good as commercial success of your last painting". I suppose, everyone gets my point about America.
Hi professor, have started watching ur videos recently...am now addicted to ur channel... totally totally agree with ur ideas...I have 2 grown up kids...both r intelligent ...my daughter has done her enginnering from DTU,a prestigious college,MBA from IIM Indore...till date she blames me for sending her forcefully to Indore...she thinks that she was not meant for Indore...I try very hard to explain her but to no avail...
Thank you sir for sharing challenges, experiences so helpful. I'm in US too finished my masters and doing job. Could you create a video on how international students can still present and contribute ideas without fear of local or white people to avoid cultural differences!

Guys sitting in India think foreign land is a peace of cake. Unfortunately it is not. I think more exploitation happens in developed countries specially with south asian people as the bosses know that he won't utter a word. I am in NZ and work 16 hours every day (80 hours a week)and not sure the weekends will be off or not. But get paid for 40 hours per week only. Once I raised this issue in the union, but nothing happened as the major reason was I m an Indian. At last I had to quit my job. Though i got a new one with bit better package but nothing changed. Fortunately I m single otherwise I had to face issues from family.
Age old problem..Nothing new ..There are both positive and negative in Industry and academia! While the expectations and returns are very high in Industry the academia leaves the choice to the incumbent ..Its comparing Apples and oranges!
There are good and bad managers everywhere, for example I worked for a manager who saw me working lot of extra hours but putting in only 40, asked to bill the overtime hours, some places they didn't pay but had 'comp' off...so its a mixed bag...but I will still work in corporate over teaching anytime, its more challenging and gives you lot of satisfaction...BTW, with the current university lockdown due to Covid, don't you think the university jobs are more riskier than corporate?
My one bad experience cannot be generalized. Therefore, I said, I am talking about myself. It does not mean others should not work in corporate. So what you are saying is very true. Regarding lockdown, private universities struggle more. The universities are functioning still. Just that the classes have moved online. Universities are essential services that cannot be closed for good like some companies. People will return to the universities to get educated and when they do, universities need to have professors to teach them. Professors come first and only then students can come right.
Namaste Professor ji. I have a habit of LISTENING to tunes of movies like the man who knew infinity,a beautiful mind ,imitation game etc while I do math and it gives me a push to do maths compared to the rate at which I do maths normally without tunes,my question is that is this habit(nearly addiction) harmful for the long run if I pursue to become a mathematician.
When I was 14 years old, I attended a talk by a renowned scientist at IIM Ahmedabad. A student there asked him the same question. The speaker responded saying, it is fine, don't worry.

Sir, I am a pg in dermatology and I wanna apply for fellowship in USA can you suggest me some colleges and states which accept IMGS more than other states. And what are the chances of getting a P.R for a fellowship student not residence student
Sorry to hear about your experience, it indeed is an unfortunate one. However never say never my friend. There are lot of good corporate companies out there that value experience and are willing to pay people well for their effort. Hope you give corporate America one more chance in future. Till then keep learning and keep gaining experience. And they say the Golden period of IT is just getting started :)
Thank you but let me try and explain Sir. I really love being in an academic setting. So I do not want to work for companies. I just love my freedom too much
Pls guide sir ..even I don’t want to b in the industry..hav to study undergrad ..hav been accepted to CS program in Wisconsin-Madison,univ of T and U BC ...pls help and guide

Hello sir I am srinibas patnaik i have doubt is i am interest in aerospace enginerring is aerospace enginerring good scope in USA. Please help me for choosing. Thank you.
All these excuses like "we don't have the money" are always bs, the faster you learn that the faster you'll get ahead. Also, you can CONTROL the amount of work that comes to you. It's just that we tend to take all the work and then get buried.Things like billing 40 hours a week is exactly the type of stuff you should NEVER DO. It's highly UNPROFESSIONAL to do that. You are essentially working for free. You can be a high earning individual and control the flow of work, it requires you to lose the FEAR of losing a job and then demand much more. It can be done.
If you demand much more or billing more hours (even though you worked for more hours), they will easily replace you. According to companies, employees are easily replaceable.
I'm a student in an IIT and my professor who is also my thesis supervisor, abused me a lot. He is angry because he feels that the only reason I'm working with him is because I couldn't go for my research internship in the UK due to the pandemic. This has taken a huge toll on my mental health throughout this pandemic. I HATE academia! It's filled with nasty people who don't appreciate you for your work! Dr. Sambhara, with all due respect, I would like to say that you may be a good a fit in this culture, but I am hopeless. I don't know where I will go if everywhere is abusive.
There are bad people in every profession. A supportive adviser can be a great blessing. So don’t let this one bad experience define your future. Some people are there to teach us how not to behave and what we should not become
hello sir, I'm gonna join a BBA (Logistics and supply chain) college this year and by the end of the degree I want to be placement ready so can u pls help me guide how to build a strong CV so that I stand out from rest of the crowd and get 1st preference at placements (Industry ready).
Hi my daughter Is studying in 12th cambrige syllabus in Bangalore. Further study’s in bachelor in psychology which stream give a good scope. So pls guide us in this matter. Which state has the best collages. After studying in bachelor psychology how many years can she stay in USA and can she get any job related to psychology. Ok
Can you please suggest if I should get a master degree in US after 10 years of experience in IT with a bachelor degree from India? can I pursue a degree here on H1B? what is the best master degree option for a working professional so I can manage both work and study? appreciate your help.
It’s better for H1B folks to target FAAMNG companies before turning 30 to get a good stock grant and make money at the least if not much growth prospects.
I said, I do not want to work in a company. I also do not want to become a police officer or a doctor or a carpenter. Does not mean these are bad. I was only narrating my personal story.

Sir what about masters in mechanical engineering?where should i go? .I got some offers from UK .Should I join ? or look for some job and then try for Germany or USA( I have 3 years gap due to upsc pre and I have cleared GATE) .Please help
I strongly recommend to get 3 years of work experience before going for masters. No point in spending money for a degree and competing with freshers. But if going for a masters is the only option then fine.
go to Germany the work life balance is much better than jn the USA. the USA at least in big towns is a rat race. and money is important above all else and you will spend most of your time at work away from family. in Germany people are much better about leaving work at the office. i also heard germany has been moving to the 35h work week.
*Sir I request please make a video of this* I am expecting to get an admit in on of the top 10 schools in the US for Electronics Engineering. But I am shocked to see how salaries are so low for all brances other than CS/IT. Could you make a video on scope and salary of Non-IT Branches in USA. I am worried cause from a tender age, I always focused on Physics and Math, including olympiads and neglected Computer subject to an extent that I dont even have it now in Class 12. Im afraid I made the wrong choice in life as I worked harder than many IT people but still would be paid less in life.
@@DesiAmericanProfessor Thats a common answer I receive sir. People also say that money is not everything in life, but it definitely is very important. People work 50-60 hours a week in silicon valley so that they can build a luxurious life and can live comfortably, afford vacations, a good home, car etc. Its okay but could you atleast make a video on salary in Electronics/Electrical field in USA after graduating from top 10 schools - fresher, mid career, senior, late career and close to retirement salary. That would provide a great deal of insight sir. You can also take it a step further and compare all of the Engineering Branches. Most of the people from the subcontinet come to US for engineering/MBA. If you cover the different engineering branches, it will also help younger people to decide career who plan to move abroad, and you might as well have a filthy amount of views since this topic isnt covered in proportion to the amount of students who concern over this.
I have friend who did MS at ASU in EE. He is working as Physical Design Engineer at AMD. As per my knowledge there is no much difference in salaries. You have to switch jobs if you want more. Same applies everywhere
I myself was in a similar position in 2008 recession. I could not get a fresher software developer job for myself. I got four offers but all four were rescinded. So you are asking me for tips to succeed on something I had failed. I wish I could help. Perhaps, I can make a video about that failure story perhaps?
@@DesiAmericanProfessor can you refer me or help in finding jobs so that I can get interview as I am not getting interviews i am a fresher i applied to 530 jobs but not many interviews.
the only way you will get a job as a fresher will have to be via putting fake experience on resume that you have good knowledge on and fake it until you make it. and even if you don't , get laid off and search for next employment.
may be I should make a video. I am almost my own boss. I decide when to wake up, what to work on, when to work on. I am a free researcher. I am accountable to produce enough quantity of quality research every year though.
Boss, you dont know the working climates in India, specially in top companies, there you were just get threatened to lose 3 working hours salary and here you have to just tolerate everything (abuse, worst abuse, deadly abuse) and if react- you will loose your job. Just like dog.....you have to be loyal to your boss/company.
Dude, it's your fault not companies fault. You gotta speak up for extra hours in form of comp off or extra pay. People on H1 are scared to raise there voice coz they are scared of being laid off. Clients are also humans , if you speak up they will take that into account.
