It's amazing how much of this equipment still survives the elements and people, even after years and years of usage and evolution. Old and new electronics that are very delicate in nature yet can take a degree of beating without breaking for good.

I'm an EE and I think you're technique is just fine. Good engineering is knowing what things work, how they work and how to efficiently apply that knowledge to get something done. Looks like you're applying good engineering practice. It's not dogma, otherwise we'd never progress.

Nice, thanks! I am facing a real problem, and have been putting it off now for over 2 years. I purchased a very nice ICOM 2 meter mobile radio to use in my RV, it was advertised as working with "display problem." Well the problem is that the display is made op of tiny LED's each smaller then 1/2 grain of rice soldered into the shape of an 8 so as to display th frequencies. over 1/2 of them are bad. I have not dived much deeper into it, perhaps it is a connection issue, or the LED's have burned. In preparation, I found some very small green LED's that I intend to solder in place if they are the problem but my hands are not as steady as they were 55 years ago when I first began soldering, and I fear that I may do more damage to the area then repair. Your video has given me some ideas on how this may come together, if all goes well with my next medical exam tomorrow, I may well dive into her, if not it will make little difference to me as, well at 67 when the doctor orders an emergency MRI, you become a bit worried if you will see your 68th birthday.... Thanks KE0JBL

I already completed the though, If you say something, Then say "But I love it anyway." then you're saying you don't care about the other thing, You love doing that, So me saying "When you don't know what's going on," means like I don't know what's going on but if I add in "But love watching him do stuff anyway." it's saying that I don't care about the start part of it, But I just love watching him do stuff, Anyway, I had this comment too long, Maybe my Grammar is shit, Lol.

What do you think of, instead of the way you presented at: 8:45 That you put solder on a single pad first, then heat it as you lightly push the connector on Then repositioning and reflowing it to get it properly lined up? I don’t repair things and am only a hobbyist, but when I solder things with multiple pins, that’s what I do I’m just wondering if there’s a reason I shouldn’t do that
@johnfrancisdoe1563
@johnfrancisdoe1563 5 лет назад
runforitman The reason he gave in the video. The small amount of flux included in the hollow solder goes away fast so you have to be quick to use your method. Besides the extra flux method in this video, there's Big Clive's techniques of holding the solder with 2 fingers and the component with 2 other fingers on the same hand.

Question: You started off with what looked like a Hakko BCM type tip (the flat one with sort of a solder well in the end; many manufacturers call this type miniwave or something to that effect), wouldn't that have been much better for soldering the connector pins than the chisel tip? That's what I use and I get perfect connections without bridging in a single drag (and it also works great for removing bridges because the solder gets sucked right into the well).
@orangesharpy
@orangesharpy 2 года назад
Can't believe that Hakko constantly beeps like that every time you change the tip. That's insane. No way to disable that? 15:19 That's what she said also including the motion.

What difference does a little extra solder make? From Nasa Apollo mission: "…the Saturn V contained so many electrical solder joints that if just 1/32" (about the thickness of your fingernail) of extra wire and one extra drop of solder were left on each electrical joint, the additional weight would amount to nearly 100,000 pounds-the total combined weight of the rocket's entire Apollo spacecraft payload!"
