The first snow of winter was falling over Scotland and I wanted to get out onto the hills for some landscape photography in the subzero conditions. Heading out into Galloway with my good friend Hubert and trusty canine companion Coops, we made an ascent of Corserine (841m) with our packs laden with camping gear for a summit camp at 841m.
This was my first ever winter wild camp on top of a mountain and I was not prepared. I spent the night shivering in my three season sleeping bag on only a closed cell foam sleeping mat to insulate me from the ground. My equipment was totally frozen and I struggled to stay warm as the temperature plummeted to a steady -7 degrees with a persistent wind (I didn't record the wind chill factor at the time) and near constant low visibility.
Needless to say, I learned from the experience, having come close to hypothermia. We had a great time though!

Mistakes / Update Having double checked the map I’ve discovered that Meaul is in fact Carlin’s Cairn! Apologies for the error - the cold is a strange beast!

Cracking footage guys. Lots of aircraft wrecks around there too. Carin's Cairn is worth an explore.

Cheers, glad you enjoyed it :) We didn’t see any fuselage, but will keep an eye out next time! I’ll definitely be back for Carlin’s Cairn (which I mistakenly took for Meaul), but Millfire is next when the situation allows :)

Great stuff looking forward to trying some of these areas myself once I get my beginner hiking legs working, maybe try to draw something and try my hand at photography. Hope you have a great week.

Hi Bob, thanks for watching! It’s definitely worthwhile getting out there and experiencing the hills, especially to get a wee bit done, good luck 😀

Yess mate! This was brilliant and has given me another place to add to the wishlist of climbs (when we're not grounded). I see you have the same GoPro battery issues I've had too. Great stuff mate and you're definitely right... Outside is good for you 👍🏼

Thanks! It's a long walk to the base of the hill (3km) but it's a good one! The views are fantastic up top, very open like much of the rest of Galloway

@@outlawedlandscapes I like the whole trek to the base idea, it's a bit of an adventure before the main event. I've always fancied doing a full days trek to a base, bagging the hill and a full days trek back. Feel like you've earned it and all that. I've thought about getting the two extra batteries and chucking them in the charger, linking a power bank and keeping it powered on the go. I too turned off wi-fi and non essential features too 😂 it's mad how power conscious some of us have become.

@@AScotsmanOutdoors Aye, it's a good way to let the body warm up & to build some stamina before the climb itself. As you'll know, they body can be a bit WTF when you suddenly start climbing on a gradient if you haven't warmed up! That's been an idea of mine too, though perhaps unpractical when active. Certainly for bits to camera though! I've definitely found myself conscious of available power this winter - these subzero conditions have ate my batteries for breakfast! Funny though, my big Nikon batteries last for days!

Great video man! Quite fancy climbing Corserine was the path easy enough to follow on the map? I went up Cairn table and Cairnsmore of Carsphairn last year you should give them a go excellent hikes 😀👍

Hi David, thanks for watching & I'm glad you enjoyed it! The path through the forestry is a doddle & then the route cuts up over the shoulder of Craigrine onto the Corserine plateau on a fairly obvious trail through the muck & heather :) COC is definitely on the list :)
