Today we’re going to talk about the interesting relationship between cortisol (stress) and vitamin D. Is it vitamin D that causes low cortisol, or is it the cortisol (either too high or too low) that causes a vitamin D deficiency?
Vitamin D is required for adrenal hormone production. Not just cortisol, but other adrenal hormones as well. If a person is deficient in vitamin D, then they could also be deficient in certain adrenal hormones. This could set them up for all sorts of problems.
Potential health problems caused by stress:
• Ulcers
• Diabetes
• Increased risk of cancer
• Autoimmune diseases
• Heart conditions
• Infections
• Insomnia
• Sleep apnea
• Anxiety or depression
• Weight gain
Both vitamin D and cortisol are anti-inflammatories. High cortisol (Cushing’s syndrome) and low cortisol (Addison’s disease) are both related to a vitamin D deficiency.
Cortisol normally suppresses the white blood cells, and vitamin D modulates the immune system-it helps control it. Both vitamin D and cortisol can also potentially help prevent autoimmune diseases.
Another thing to note is that the raw material to make vitamin D and cortisol comes from the same thing: cholesterol.
If a person has any condition that involves cortisol, they may want to take vitamin D to potentially help normalize their cortisol.
Causes of a vitamin D deficiency:
• Lack of vitamin D in the diet
• Lack of sun
• Age
• Skin color
• Obesity
• Metabolic syndrome
• Inflammation
• Infection
• Malabsorption
• Polymorphism
• Stress
The more stress you go through, the more you could be deficient in vitamin D. Overall, in my opinion, stress can cause a vitamin D deficiency, and a vitamin D deficiency can make you more stressed, causing a cortisol problem.

Dr Berg I have been religiously following you since 2017. Your lectures are amazing. I would like you to give us more information about the nuetrophils/lymphocytes ratio. Apparently the ratio is an inflammation marker in the body. It's a marker of mortality risk. They say when the ratio is more than 3,0 it's an indication that one's chances of survival are slim. The lower number indicating good health status is said to be 0,5. At that level it is assumed one's risk of contracting cancer and other chronic diseases are very small. Indeed they say astronauts before embarking on a space mission, their nuetrophils/lymphocytes ratio is thoroughly checked as the ratio increases in outer space because of lack of gravity. Basically the nuetrophils/lymphocytes ratio is an indication of insulin resistance. I will await your next video on this topic of insulin resistance. I will listen on the radio!

Hi Dr. Berg, since I’ve been studying cortisol and relationship to vitamin D I’ve started taking vitamin D morning and night. Also been taking magnesium to help with constipation and sleep. I’ve noticed that there’s so many factors that affect cortisol besides stress, anxiety and I’ve learned diet, vitamins, proper breathing and mindset are all contributing factors to getting proper restful sleep. My biggest problem is exercising too hard and perhaps too late in the day. Your videos on cortisol’s affect on sleep are helping me understand more and preventing sleep deprivation.

Interesting. I've been under higher amounts of stress than usual lately and for the first time in years, it's not causing me to get sick. The only thing I can think of that I've been doing differently is taking much higher daily doses of vit D. 5000-10,000 IU.

Dr. Berg, WOW ! I am really having issues in trying to respond . I just now emailed my doctor to ask what MY numbers were AND what the normal numbers are to be. It may take a couple of days for him to get back to me, so when he does respond, I will once again put a comment as to what he tells me. I am SO afraid to just haul off Willy-nilly and order a bottle for taking 10,000 per day. I am so incredibly grateful that you took the time to actually respond to me ! By the way, when I typed in the link you gave me, it indicated that that video was no longer available.

Dr. Berg, I have learned more about nutrition and physiology than from the nutrition and anatomy & physiology classes in college. I hope you continue to do deep dives in many different conditions that people suffer from today. Personally, I am searching for the actual root cause of PCOS and have found that not enough research has been done on this horrible and debilitating condition to women.

When I think back on it, my eye pain started the day after my aunt died from leukemia. I'm not sure whether stress could have played a role in any vitamin deficiencies that may have begun around that time, but that was the major stress event that occurred around that time. I made sure to take a vitamin D tablet every morning during this past winter and that was the first winter season ever when I did not get sick once. I am grateful for your channel and feel like I always learn something new!

Thank you Dr. Berg. You are Real Human Engineer. As I told you before I was working as Chief 1st Class Marine Engineer till my 36 year old and then I start to work as Operations Manager in the office and I did not stay on Sun in the same amount of time as I did it during ocean traveling. So, I got health problems by my 48 year old due to Vitamin D deficiency as I understood in 2012 when I was 51 years old. Today my Vitamin D is 75 from Life Lab and is in the lower left range even Im on the beatch every day in Vancouver but I can tell you that my BioRobot is the same as it was in my 24-25 year old. My Testosterone levels is 28.6 from Life Lab blood test in my 60 year old today.

Hi Doc this is off topic, but I just discovered a new concept in weightloss I'd never heard about before called "ZigZag" diet cycling. It's where you may eat a high amount of calories on one day (like maybe on the day you work out) and then you have a low amount of calories on the following day. This keeps your body from resetting it's BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) from having a prolonged daily calorie deficit. So instead of looking at your calories on a daily basis, look at them on both a weekly AND daily basis. This is supposed to help you avoid plateaus, which is your body's response to weight loss (I know you know that already, lol!). Might be a good topic for a future video after you've researched it. Keep up the great work! Love you, Man!

Dr. Berg, are stress related allergies reversible?? Do I have to avoid my food allergies forever? It’s hard for me to change my ways especially when people tell me that my allergies aren’t real just because I didn’t have them before. I’m learning a lot from your videos. Can you do more videos based on allergies developed by stress? I learned a lot from a video you posted about it. I never knew what was going on with me. I also had shingles at a young age and didn’t know why. I was always sick. You’re helping me so much, thank you! 💗

I'm an exercise physiologist with a specialty in functional medicine and I suggest asking your physician about LDN. Low dose naltrexone is a godsend when it comes to lowering inflammation. Too much to go into here, but it will calm your immune system down, plus it has countless other health benefits.
@Total_Body_Fitness_USA
@Total_Body_Fitness_USA 3 года назад
@@andrefecteau I totally agree! However, Naltrexone in very low doses is amazing. There are even studies showing how it stops tumor progression. I train in functional medicine and I believe everything is about prevention and as close to natural remedies as one can find. However, this is the only pharmaceutical I recommend for patients and it has been a godsend. I've taken countless people off of thyroid medications because their thyroid completely healed after LDN due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
