I drove my lil Corvair all over the upstate NY area,Watertown. It was a great snow car. From listening to the video that you aren't tripping/engaging the fast idle cam which would increase rpms when cold. LUV your car so much I'm looking for my own again.. If I had one criticism it would be I would have painted the wheels before mounting the new tires. STAY SAFE TEXAS. Melanie
My Mom worked at a tire store and was given a free set of Michelin radials, it was funny seeing mechanics shake their heads when my five foot and a bit mom tried to tell them the tires weren't flat. ;-D
Great job on your videos, I just watched them all. Why? I'm negotiating to buy a 65 monza convertible white w/red interior 4sp 140hp. I was looking to educate myself on how to rebuild the engine your videos have truley done the trick. I like the way you don't cut out the obstacles, I know actually how you feel. Keep up the good work.
The tire pressure listed in the glove box is for bias ply tires, radials need 10-15 ponds more. Just make sure they have a 10 pound difference front to rear with rears have more pressure than the fronts.
Having a heavy engine over the rear tires makes the Corvair run great in deep snow. Most fun I had with mine was bombing around in deep snow in a huge, empty supermarket parking lot during a Chicago snowstorm. Chugging around and doing donuts in snow that was deeper than the floor boards. Never had trouble starting in the cold, but it definitely needed choke until the engine warmed up.
I have been driving my 64 though this winter in Ohio. Had no issues in snow whatsoever when I got the same new tires! I did get it undersprayed as well for protection & I wash it weekly with a garden hose & soap to keep salt of the best I can. Also never had an issue starting in negative degree temperatures. I do let mine warm up for 3-4 minutes depending on temperature. Maybe a choke issue? I don't know all the systems for a powerglide that would make it did when going into gear or tapping the pedal. Anyway stay safe out there!
That tire changing machine is awesome! & the new tires look good as well. Two things that might be causing your Corvair to stall , 1 the trans. modulator ,2 the vacuum balance tubes that go each carb. make sure they are seated good & tight & no cracks . Looks like the weather is going to break soon ! If the trans.modulator is original that needs to be replaced , either 1 or 2 is not that hard to do , but I would start with no. 2 first . Thanks for the video & good luck.
I get a majority of my things off Clark's Corvair Parts, they have just about everything! The altornator you can get from any auto parts store, just need to have the correct mount and wire it up correctly.
Hope your doing ok in TX. The tire's are gonna make a huge difference in the ride. Whats your fuel milage? My VW never ran good in the cold until it was nice and warm, acted just like your corvair
I've spend "enough" haha, I haven't added it all up but maybe 5 or 6 into it. I spend more on the tires than getting the engine right. A bit over 1k on the interior alone....
