Car: Corvette Z06; Driver: sport auto's Test Driver Christian Gebhardt; Track: Nordschleife; Laptime: 7.13,90 min (rounded up: 7.14 min); Tyre: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 ZP; Supertest Corvette Z06: More in sport auto 8/2017.
Wow that is actually insanely fast. That's the third fastest lap time "Sport Auto" ever did on the Nurburgring behind the AMG GT R and Porsche 918. and all of that with a manual!
Yes but think of it, the AMG GTR has just 560 horses and yet did a 7:10, so yeah GM is superb but gotta give props to Mercedes for putting 560 horses to ground way more effectively than 650 horses
Manual vs DCT time aint that far off with Corvettes The Vettes 8 speed AT is not a significant improvement over manual as its not as fast as DCT The Vette still is awesome but I gotta say if Vette gets 90/100 for putting the horsepower to ground the AMG GTR gets 95/100 and I think Porsches are the best in this attributes, almost all Porsches are easily 95+ cars
Ponygt 662 well the AMG has shorter gear ratios and basically no time wasted with shifting, whereas the Corvette has a pretty long gear ratio. Put the AMG DCT in the vette and it will be much faster
Sport Auto...thank you for doing this test with a great result...awesome driving. I am hoping that the GM team, finally post the time they ran when they were testing the Z06 more than a year ago. Apparently they had a great time with a factory team driver but for unknown and many speculated reasons never released the time. GM release the time, you have nothing to lose, I hope.
That is because after GM crashed the Z06 once, the Nurburgring put a speed limit on the track before they could get back, so they never released a lap time.
GM has its issues, but they do have incredibly talented chassis and powertrain engineers. I am still stunned at the performance on The Ring of the Camaro ZL1. Do you guys remember the POS Chevrolet Cobalt (worst car ever) that the engineers dropped in the LNF turbo 4 and the chassis engineers did their magic and the Cobalt SS turbo (not the supercharged version) killed it on the Nurburgring? The rest of the car was garbage, but the drivetrain and chassis were magic for a front wheel drive car. This Z06/Z07 once again shows the chassis/powertrain gang at GM are amazing. They had to produce this level of performance while producing a car that would sell for a fraction of the price of the competition. Its a lot easier to do when the car can sell for $800,000.
I remember an article where the Cobalt was lapping faster than the mighty Miata. To car people, that's a big thing to say. To non car people that laugh at the Miata for being a "girls" car, I say F-off LOL.
Damn it Jeff my C6 ZR1 shared the same steering wheel from a cobalt isn't it crazy how far GM and American cars have come in a short time gotta love it!!!!!!
Jeff Tyler What makes the Corvette sooo good is the fact they have the most successful racing program in american sports car history. Theyve been to the top of the top for so many decades they use all the knowledge to take racing technologies and use them in the production covettes. Add in all the testing. And you get the Corvettes handling.
" They had to produce this level of performance while producing a car that would sell for a fraction of the price of the competition." May be true that they have similar levels of performance but the Corvette requires a very good driver. The more expensive competition is much easier to drive, therefore the regular sportscar owner will be able to drive them faster than the Corvette. Well, the direct competition in laptime would be the Porsche gt3, which is faster around the Nordschleife by just one second (it has 160 hp less!) and has much better manufacturing quality. In europe the Corvette is priced at ~110000€ compared to the Porsche gt3 ~150000€, so it still is quite a bit cheaper, but you won´t have the quality you get from the Porsche, yet a similar level of performance.
Sehr schön gemacht! Bought a new 2019 Corvette Grand Sport, with a MANUAL TRANSMISSION, and it’s a great car! Huge, fantastic handling, and with the magnetic ride control, the car goes from track stiff to cruising smooth in an instant. My wife even asks when we can go for drives in the Corvette Grand Sport, and that rarely happens with my NSX. Buy one, if at all possible, life is short.
Hey kids. Pay attention to his seat position. He has COMPLETE control over his vehicle. Don't be that kid with the seat laid back so far your hands can barely reach the wheel. Or do it, but when you put your sports car into a curb or center divider don't say you didn't know better. Great job Stig, and phenomenal job Government Motors!
I wanna see a driver that's really good and knows both the car and track well, and put them in the automatic. I'm think that will shave at least 3 seconds
Leaf springs and a pumped up old school engine🤟🏻....I don‘t care which one million dollar super hightech car could go 5 or 10sec faster, what no normal guy could do...this is great engineering!!
NoReplacementForDisplacement You'll see the improvement in the ZR-1. I'm still waiting to see what Ford does in that $500K GT of their's. I doubt they'll hot lap it.
Z06 came out in 15', the Camero ran the time, the corvette never ran the ring with their test driver, I suspect the lap time will be significantly faster with Jim Mero. Also remember the Camaero basically uses all corvette power train parts.
Bravo GM! As a Z06 owner I was always a little pissed that they didn't release a ring time for this car. Now let's see what the ZR1 and the new C8 can do.

I own a 2016 Z06, A8, convertible, 3LZ, in Daytona Sunrise Orange Metallic. I was asked today 3/10/24, "what color is that?" I love it. Such a fun car!
What model year C7 Z06 is it? Cuz they said the 2015 and 2016 ones overheat. Just want to know if it is a 2017 model. Maybe it might make a difference.
the a8 is not good for track use. cant shift with the paddles because its slower than slow. When you leave it in auto it will up and downshift too much.
You have to give this guy credit for HUGE stones AND he made a lot of great corrections when the car could have gotten away from him really fast which would have been BAD. VERY BAD!!! Great job!!!
If it was a better driver, better times. He missed gears a couple of times, could’ve been in a lower gear a couple, and just went over those curbs just a tad too much a couple of times. He’s got balls, but has room for improvement. For the car, phenomenal. Sounds awesome, and looks fantastic. 🇺🇸💪👍🦅
He seemed to not be going full out on the second half of the track. He could have gone faster it seems but that would have been in a perfect world. The time is ridiculously fast.
Need some Cup2R tires on that thing and do another epic run. Tire tech has changed significantly since this vid, probably good for another 5-6 seconds with the Cup2R tires.
This car is impressive, but most of it is down to the really wide front tires and not to mention the michelin pilot sport cup 2 semi slick with the special compound
The amount of abuse these cars take when it comes to the huge dips on track. Squating of the springs and suspension. The moving weight at high speeds and the rims and tires. The brakes most take speed off ultra quickly or you risk the wall kissing you. The grip necessary to fly around the track. Its astonishing.
And with a manual. Things are floating around in the cabin... hes not just a driver. He took flight in areas. Its videos like this that remind you how fast a sub 7 minute lap is. Now amg just put out sub 7.50. While this is still driving. Visceral. The amg makes it look like cruising to the market. You still see the tires gripping and the lateral g and moments of inertia here.
Yes, there is room for improvement. This isn't the manufacture's run but it's a great benchmark. Also, this is with a/c on. A/C sucks around 8 to 10% of the power from an engine to run.
The seating position with the shifter seems a bit awkward. If it were me, I'd rake the seat back a bit more and lower the driver position with the legs less at an angle..moving the shifter position forward toward mid thigh
The best super sports car around it's other home turf in Europe. I love it. And still faster than most other super sports cars in the world. Bred in Europe and built in America. There is no replacement for displacement.
He's really good in the high speed sections but looks a little choppy at slow speeds and it seems like he's bogging it down a little bit in the slow parts of the track also.
Its a manual transmission. Older driving philosophy quickly being lost. you have so much torque that shifting is slower than letting it drop in rpm. You arent trying to keep high revs. It could spin out. This has a supercharger too. So you can let the gears pull as long as you like and have plenty of power for the corners. . Its only recently that people realized the higher average rpm means quicker lap time. While this is a more shift time derived strategy. Check out the old can am and group c stuff. Where they still only had 4 speed transmissions. Youll be shocked at how long a gear is when you can go 240 mph.
@@biggiesmalls7939 gtr suck it's OK they made the same care for over a decade .... the c7 manual is the last true sports car that's a supercar contender for a fraction of the price! 💥 BOOM MIC DROP 🎤
@@victorbremer8097google is free, Nissan admitted they cheated on the Nurburgring with their nismo gtr. 7:08 was not done stock. Go watch the full video.
Waiting for my c7 z06 to arrive from Texas I'm the furthest from a chevy guy but this vette is no ordinary chevy it's its own brand you can show someone a vette from c1 to c7 they know its a vette even if not car people sadly the c8 won't have that talent can't wait to row that 650 hp around gear by gear
