If I recall, Ebert made his opinions on video games being art when he spoke about how he saw the 2004 DOOM adaptation with The Rock. I think after his brief spat with Clive Barker, he clarified that his thoughts on video games being art was outdated because he hadn't played video games in years, and recognized his views were outdated. So I think before he died, he was open to the idea of video games having artistic merit.

Yeah I heard multiple sources cite the Doom review, but he doesn't actually disparage games at all in that article. He merely says that he's never going to play Doom (which is fair your not expected to read the book a movie is based on when you review it). I really hope it wasn't that article because that would mean a bunch of people started badgering Ebert for no reason. (I also mention the article where he talks about being more open to the idea of games as art at the end of the video :])

Personally I think this whole debate comes down to people conflating the title of "art" as being inherently good, as if bad art or art made to be mass marketable isn't a thing. We can all agree movies and music are artforms yet there are tons of horrible films and repetitive pop songs made entirely to sell, devoid of any greater meaning or artistic intent

Every now and again the RU-vid algorithm blesses me with an actually good video that it would otherwise bury into the ground. Somehow a video that should at least have 20k views only manages to get 20. Fucking sick that i got this video in my recommended by some short miracle, keep making videos man you're good at this whole RU-vid thing.

Harlan Ellison also hated video games but participated on making his own. Cosmology of Kyoto is perhaps the most disturbing game i know lol

We make games that can be fully appreciated as art. The truth is the games the majority of population plays are like Candy Crush or Roblox. These games are art in the same sense of a slot machine. Yes slots are a form art of , but they are consumed as if they are drugs. Media in general is designed to be consumed as a drug. TikToks are videos consumed as drugs, and NFTs are pictures traded like drugs. To escape this mindset you need to consume media like real food. If you take in only junk media, your brain will rot. The medium doesn't matter, the content inside feeds the mind. You mind can't be nourished on TikToks and Roblox. Even simple games like Tetris do good for the mind, many people learn about classic music by playing Tetris.

I tend to agree with ebert but then I remember finishing silent hill 2 and I shake my head out of the stupor of such an awful take. If silent hill 2 isnt art especially in how much it moved me as a young man then nothing is art. I spent 2 decades trying to study and debate and research all of the nooks and crannies of silent hill lore and especially the myriad of deep hidden meanings and the pastiches that the game utilizes as a japanese interpretation of American horror culture.

Good video, but you kinda went on a tangent at the end. Didn’t go more depth on CoK
@FraudDepartmentYT
@FraudDepartmentYT Год назад
I fully intended to make this video entirely about COK when I first started, but unfortunately there isn't that much to talk about. At least not without spoiling more than I wanted too. So the project kinda evolved into something else, glad you still liked it though!

He wasnt talking about games as we know them today....back when he said that...video games were a white dot bouncing between two white bars(pong) they didnt see it progressing to the point of basically cinema like it is today...thing is it surpasses cinema ....a video game now a days is like a movie YOU GET TO CONTROL....back then ppl couldnt IMAGINE gaming would get as popular as it is now....and to be honest popularity was the worst thing that happened to gaming....now they know most gamers will pay whatever for whatever and its sad ....quit buying v bucks quit buying shark cards PLZ STOP

If a banana taped to a wall is considered "art," then that is not something I would like video games to be associated with.

Elder Ring is not only using a widely popular formula of the Souls series but even went further to remove one of my favorite aspects of exploration by turning it into an opern world game, I would never even think about these two games as equals even under the context your attempting to represent them.
@FraudDepartmentYT

It's not so much a comparison in terms of gameplay or features or whatever. It was in terms of peoples reaction to it. I just used Elden Ring as the most recent example in this series, but with all of these games there is a subset people that complain it's too hard. Which is my point, it's strange to me that these same people can yell from the roof tops that games are art while also saying that a game is invalid because it's too hard.

Roger Ebert was right, video games are CRAP! Not art! HOW IS ANYTHING THAT HAS A LIMITED SHELF LIFE ART? Thank you uploader, for pointing that out. Any game that becomes UNPLAYABLE after only a short amount of time, not only is it NOT art, it's not even a game. It's a piece of dog shit. Hell, at least a piece of dog shit lasts for a few years. Anyway this is an excellent video, thank you for putting it together. Back in the day, like in the 90's when Ebert reviewed this, yes, there were great games. That era is over. Period.

yeah make sense for art is timeless and games don't last long physically, but videogames are talked about "art" as in "good"
@turkeygod6665
@turkeygod6665 3 месяца назад
@@MicahPachirisuGuy But movies don't last long either, several are lost media or no longer have support. If games aren't art, movies aren't either. Which I suppose you could claim, but its both or nothing. Also theres also games that are still completely playable after many many decades. Surely those are still art by your definition.
