I know this is an older video, but I had to click. I'm trying to do a Vash Trigun Maximum cosplay, and seeing Knives on the thumbnail I took as a sign XD

Thank you so much for this. I'm cosplaying William T. Spears who uses a scythe and this really helped because I didn't want to be constantly holding a five foot rod around everywhere xDDD Thank you once again. You've saved me.

If you drill a hole in the dowel with a drill bit smaller than the screw the dowel won’t splinter and split on you. Before screwing the screw into the pipe & dowel you can countersink the screw head by CAREFULLY DRILLING the hole in the pipe with a slightly larger drill bit. If you choose to go to quickly you’ll make the hole way bigger than you need it to be.

Ok dude I need your help. I've been trying the heat gun, PVC, wooden dowel things for 2 days now and no matter how many times I wiggle and twist them they STILL are too tight once they cool. Any advice?

Oh thank you so much for making this. I was wondering what would be a good way to make long props fit for traveling without the use of connecting pipes :D

Great video, exactly what I needed. You said I could also always add glue to bound the dowel and PVC pipe. What kind of glue should I use to do that? And wouldn't the heat for fitting them together interfere with the glue? I would naturally use contact cement but I'm not sure if the pressure of the withdrawal of the cooling pipe would be enough to properly bound them.

OK contact cement might be stupid because I would have to put it on both surfaces and thus heat it up directly, I might be better off, just putting epoxy onto the dowel rod. Any thoughts?

ya glue after heat fitting if you want and you guessed it contact cement for wood to pipe lastly if you let the pipe cool over a tight pipe/dowel 6" of surface friction often is enough or a screw works too.

I would like your opinion, for a staff kind of weapon that I expect to take apart often which method should I use, the screw fasteners or the press-fit? I would prefer to go with the screws myself to achieve that robust look but I am afraid that after too many take aparts the wood would get compromised.

Screws will be stronger but yes over time the threading will degrade the wood. Your choice is strength or convenience.

can we use dowels as attachment pieces? im am trying to make a huge 5 ft sword but would liek to be able to break it up into thirds so i can travel. I am wondering if dowels will give it enough support to carry the sword around and also allow me the ability to break up my sword.

yes in fact there will be a tutorial soon on a 6ft sword made that comes apart like this you can also search for my war banner videos too for reference

ah, i recently brought neodymium magnets to glue on 1/2'in dowels, then use a pvc pipe with a magnet inside. (if i can find one that fits the 1/2'in dowel snugly). i think this will make a perfect and sturdy attachment.

sounds like a good plan

They come in many sizes from 3mm. to 2.6cm. Worst case get a pole and test it in store.
