Cotopaxi Volcano Update; New Eruption Occurs, Ash Falls in Quito

Cotopaxi just produced a new explosive eruption, causing particles of ash to fall in sections of Quito. Although this eruption was quite small, it likely represents the beginning of a prolonged eruptive episode at the volcano. Cotopaxi is a highly dangerous volcano as it could best be described as South America's equivalent of Mount Saint Helens. This video will discuss its ongoing eruption and what might happen next.

You might be wondering why I posted 2 videos today. The reason is I had planned to post this Monday but then Mauna Loa erupted so I kept delaying the video.

I will readily admit that before the internet, I didn’t know much about volcanoes until I moved to the base of one a few decades ago with the exception of 1980’s Mount St.Helens eruption. I have learned a lot from watching your channel but I don’t think I will ever get the extensive vocabulary about volcanoes into what’s left of my brain’s memory banks! 🤣😂🤣😂

Pft, Hey boobear, just a little fyi here. You will not find any of your members complaining about 2 vids per day, least of all me! You should know this by now after I have requested longer videos for over a year now, haha. Anyway, I am on board with other members PLEASE TELL US WHAT'S UP IN NZ AT THE SUPER VOLCANO OF TAUPO. there was over 180 earthquakes in 24 hrs, even more so now. Also I've noticed the Trident volcano and Katmai has had more activity recently. Lastly, Tinkula volocano in the soloman islands may have erupted a few days ago. The latter has puzzled me for it's hard to find info on it but it's one beautiful uninhabited volcano island. please at least 'heart' my comment to let me know you actually read this please! Or I may have to track you down just to smack the back of ya neck (jkin') 😂🤣Always much love from ya lil ole southern feisty lady in NC! Your number 1 fan from the beginning when you only had 5k subs! Love ya, take care and be safe, babycakes!

When I was a teenager my family lived in Quito Ecuador for three years. in the mid 70’s. Academia Cotopaxi was where we went to school. On one of our field trips we were able to climb Cotopaxi, it was an unforgettable experience….Sacred Thank You Ecuador ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

I was there just a few weeks ago. Missed both the eruptions! Ecuador was such an amazing place to visit for the birds and plants. Even got woken up by a fairly sharp jolt from Tungurahua at 3am.

Not a expert but I was 30 miles away from Mount St Helens when it blew. I went out the front door of the house and turned around and looked at it and all its grandeur. Us being smart loggers and knowing all the roads we drove right up to it on the south side well we did not know what was happening on the north side. There were people with picnic baskets sitting there looking straight up at this epic moment when sirens blared and loud speakers yelled at us like we were children to get the hell out of there. These are huge events. You would think someone would learn. But as all human I am one and live directly under Mount Rainier. God's good.

I was on a student exchange to Quito in 1962. We had a chance tovisit Cotopaxi, but there was no sign of any geologic activity during my visit. Instead, we chased Wild Horses around the volcano itself. ( I was told that these horses were direct lineage of those that were brought from Spain by the Conquistadors. Needless to say, the closest we got to these animals was 30 meters. (Not friendly to humans!...)

So the summit of the volcano moves upward a total of 5 mm. We take this for granted but think about how sensitive the equipment needs be to detect such a small thing.

I have vague memories of Mount Saint Helens in the moments after. Growing up it was a pervasive feature, we had ash in our backyard for years, and the rivers were turned to grey mudflows with floating pumice and entire old growth trees blasted smooth all over and permeated with that pyroclastic mud flow , shredded at the base where they were ripped free from the ground and carried down miles and miles of silt filled tributaries. The whole area must have been amazing before, I know there was gold panning and gem hunting on other runoffs from the mountains but everything in the path of that massive wall of death was a grey MOON SCAPE for well over a decade but then life exploded and a new ecosystem took root. It left a mark on me to see the aftermath up in the mountains on the mostly closed access roads there were areas where it looked like a parking lot but the heavy equipment for logging was half submerged. It was a surreal experience as a child. I was lucky to have parents who took me up there to explore. 🏞💚

Here is a suggested topic I would find interesting to hear about. Since the radioactive decay of uranium (generally, ignoring specific isotopes) produces progeny leading to isotopes of radium, radon, polonium, bismuth, and finally stable lead, and radon is a gas that seeps through the soil before decaying into solid isotopes of the other elements, do areas with significant underground uranium deposits end up with high concentrations of lead in the soil above? Could that soil be too contaminated with the lead for agriculture?

Bit off topic . Earthquakes, have been regularly felt around the Eastern side of the Taupo cauldera , which is no a lake . Many of the qaukes have occurred over the last few weeks , and are getting bigger , by the reports . These shocks are between 4.5 & 6.5 so far and all in close proximity to each other , on a northwest - southeast direction . The eruption alert has risen from zero to 1 .
