Could UK Builders Do This?

I saw footage of this highly detailed paper shop on TikTok and it made me wonder. Could I design something this detailed (probably not) and could the UK construction industry actually build something to this standard (also, probably not).
I have a lot of love for the construction industry, it's not the fault of any one builder that there is a retirement crisis, a de-skilling crisis, an apprenticeships crisis and a race to the bottom for construction costs on most projects.
I know there are individual building firms who work at the same level as the project in the video, but they are very rare.
This is a link to the original footage - www.tiktok.com/@archimarathon...

Pretty sure I could find a contractor that would deliver such beautiful build, but I just don't know where you'd ever find a client with the desire and finance to do it in the UK in the first place!

The wooden block on the ground is an umbrella stand. One think I'm wondering is certification and warranty - as most buildings in Japan has a much shorter shelf life,

Thanks for your comment. That makes sense.

2:38 Given they are located externally and by an entrance, umbrella holders? Fantastic detail on the steel work; the plasma cutter got a good work out on that project.

Someone else said the same. I thought afterwards that the steel could have been welded, just neatly, oh so neatly. And then ground down, polished and blued

You hit the nail on the head! I think in a multidisciplinary practice you could produce the design BUT as you rightly said… who could build it in the UK and moreover would the self righteous planners pass it… that’s the biggie!

If you could get it past building control, you'd probably want them to just ship it from Japan anyways

Reminds me of The Scottish Parliament building. I worked on it start to finish, what a shit show, there was more revisions and changes than I have seen anywhere else. Things would get built then stripped out and changed around depending what drugs the architect was on that day. Sadly we don’t have the management skills to run such a project efficiently, the above proved that. What’s your opinion of it ? A concrete jungle with oak and glass here and there.

thought it’s common knowledge uk architecture sucks compared to Japan. It’s not just the construction industry, the architecture education is just much more useful in Japan. When the AA and Bartlett are considered the best, you know just how bad the uk’s architecture education is, it’s all about the storytelling and drawings and never about the useful stuff. They are just missing the point.

When I was at architecture school the AA and the Bartlett were considered the hardest to get into, but the worst to study at as you were basically a slave to your particular tutors academic pursuit. Certainly not viewed as the best from within the industry. The art of architecture is in the storytelling. It won't get built if you can't sell the idea. You create a narrative or design language and the detailing follows that thread as the design progresses.

@@StudioSouster I agree, the unit system is the single worst thing happened to UK's architecture education, and all these other AA/Bartlett wannables are following suit. That type of focuses should stay in PhD level, like 99.9% of other fields of study. Architecture is just too special I guess, and it certainly adds to the cult. Yes storytelling is a component for sure, just not as huge as these cult schools make it out to be. Contrary to the 99.99% artsy architecture programmes in the UK (all these AA and Bartlett wannables), the top Japanese unis are unapologically rigorous in the technical aspects, they are crazy about the math and physics of building construction. It's not just one way or the other, they just prefer to tell stories that are grounded on reality. It's unreal all these superfluous storytelling constituting 2% of the whole design process is all these cult schools teach, and having the remaining merely mentioned in their projects if at all. A real world proposal does not only have stories, no client would have the patience of a school tutor to listen to your petty stories.

@@user-yk1cw8im4h Out of interest, do you work in the construction industry? And have you studied Architecture in the UK/Japan?

A few things: Generally I'm extremely disappointed in tradesmen do these days when present with a customers requirements, I had a fence for my back garden done by a person that used 3 different states of Screw (Stainless, Galvanised, rusted), didn't install a double gate as requested, or buy posts long enough, put them in deep enough or used post wrap as he said he would. I asked him to provide a solution to stop the gates falling into each other but he ignored me and then build one of the ****est gates I had seen. Also installing it to open outwards, did the same for my neighbours gate as well which was into an area where our bins resided making the gate not accessible or open past 90 degrees. To be clear I paid extra for him to clear the area behind the fence and have both gates swing inwards. Also I had to pay him two thirds of the cost up front, he then took 3-4 weeks in fits and spurts to do the work demanding more of the money until the end where there was 9% left on the bill. I paid him more over the amount for stretch goals that I gave up on and I gave him the last bit in the end just to get shot of the little shit. He was still sniffing around for a few weeks after as I had said that I was wanting to convert a double window into a set of french doors early on... the guys work was horrendous. When looking at the screws I noted that were wasn't one screw fully homed in the wood and if it was lowdown it was at an angle upwards and if it was above it was angled downwards.

Even apparently well resourced and run construction firms have let me down badly over the past few years. I am thoroughly disillusioned by it

Consider the Sagrada Familia by Gaudi (mostly) the designs were all in his head and died with him; but I’m sure, although he had realisation problems with the workforce, he didn’t have self appointed arbiters of taste, A*****le planners, preventing him from accomplishing his work.

Listening to horror stories like this makes me just want to do everything myself and not rely on someone else's handy-work.
