Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Ben Hanlin joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.

BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

In the first numbers round, I just tuned out because it was so easy. Even my "five-small" solution is easy: 8 + 3 = 11 5 x 2 = 10 11 x 10 = 110 In the second numbers round, that was more like what I was expecting. I saw Rachel's solution and also had these ones: 10 + 4 = 14 14 x 2 = 28 28 + 9 = 37 37 x 25 = 925 925 + 1 = 926 25 - 1 = 24 24 x 10 = 240 240 - 9 = 231 231 x 4 = 924 924 + 2 = 926 In the third numbers round, I saw Rachel's method, and I think the other one she spotted was this: 25 x 2 = 50 50 - 1 = 49 8 + 6 = 14 49 x 14 = 686 However, there was another way to make 49 and 14: 8 x 6 = 48 48 + 1 = 49 25 + 3 = 28 28 / 2 = 14 49 x 14 = 686 And finally, there was this solution: 6 x 3 = 18 25 + 18 = 43 43 x 8 = 344 344 - 1 = 343 343 x 2 = 686 In the final numbers round, I saw Dean's solution and also had these: 100 + 7 = 107 107 x 9 = 963 963 + 6 + 5 + 3 = 977 100 x 5 = 500 500 - 7 = 493 6 / 3 = 2 493 x 2 = 986 986 - 9 = 977 9 + 7 = 16 16 x 6 = 96 100 + 96 = 196 196 x 5 = 980 980 - 3 = 977

I did the first number by making the 10 out of the 2 and the 5. I did the second number just like Rachel. The last two were 1 away in the 30 seconds. 686 - 687! 25×3=75, 8+1=9, 9×75=675, 6×2=12, 675+12=687 977 - 978! 100+5+3=108, 108×9=972, 972+6=978

Same method here. Just to clarify we get 14x49=686. You aim to make 14x50 giving 700 and need 14 less. So 14x49 gets you 686.

I also spotted 686 = 49 × 14 but found a different way 25 × 2 = 50 50 - 1 = 49 8 + 6 = 14 49 × 14 = 686 I found this by first trying 25 × 28 = 700, then noticing I was 14 away, and I had 14 by getting 28 = 2(6 + 8)

That final numbers round just shows how the 30 seconds blinds you. Caroline must have been trying to get close with mutiplying by 9. so likely 100+5+3=108, 108*9=972, 972+6=978. Wheras I had deans way done as Colin was starting the timer. But way too many "I've got nothing"s from all conetstants during Carolines time on. She may become an Octochamp later today, but surely she can't be back for the series finals.
@ArmadilloAl
@ArmadilloAl 9 месяцев назад
Even then, it's not too hard to get there = 100 + 7 for 107, times 9 is 963, and the other three numbers (6 + 5 + 3) get you there exactly.

Only a minority of the players on the show are good at the numbers rounds. People who are good at the letters aren't likely to be good at the numbers rounds as well. I'm terrible at the letters, but pretty good at numbers, which is why I could likely never win.

"I don’t watch the whole episodes, only these videos ..." - Well, there's your problem. You may only watch Countdown for the numbers, but that's far away from the actual format of the show, in which the letters are worth significantly more points.

She's passable enough and hasn't faced any apterites yet. Most players will only play the numbers rounds defensively and rely on the letters plus the conundrum to score. We saw this amongst the CoC rounds when even the top players were only playing one large/inverted T/classroom mix.

@Pebbe496
@Pebbe496 9 месяцев назад
How I got there: I want to do 925 = 37*25 (gotta know your 25 times table for Countdown), and then +1. But with 37=9*4+1 I already used the 1. So maybe just do 36*25=900, which frees up the 1? But then I gotta make 26, that's not possible with the other numbers. But I have already made a 36, so I can add 36 (instead of 26) if I just add 1 to the 25. Now it's 4*9*(25+1) = 936, and I have a 10 left over.
@p.a.5148
@p.a.5148 9 месяцев назад
Your questions on today's episode and yesterday's episode show that you just aren't thinking about the problems in the right way. You don't need to know your "26 times tables" (or for one of the rounds yesterday, your "71 times tables"). In this case, the 25 is very helpful: you can get close with 25 x 37 = 925 or 25 x 36 = 900. Once you're in that area, you can use small "times tables" and a bit of trial and error to get to the solution shown.
@paulkenney700
@paulkenney700 9 месяцев назад
there are four 25s in 100 so in 900 there are 9 times 4 = 36. Quick way of doing maths . Also 25 times 36 being 900 so adding 1 to 25 times 36 simply adds one more 36 to the sum
