Wait… so the chain on the crochet hook doesn’t count?? No wonder l have gone wrong with counting stitches 😩 l have been trying to crochet a amigurumi bunny head for days and have unravelled it SO many times because the stitches don’t add up! I’m new to crocheting - so thank you 🙏🏻

No the loop on the hook doesn't count as a stitch. Now you can finish your bunny! I'm glad it was helpful. Have you checked out my free beginner masterclass? It's really helpful in teaching you everything you need to know about the basics of crochet and will set you up for success! Learning crochet from youtube tutorials has helped me make several hats concealing a multiple of sins; warped shapes and bulges that fortunately aren't too obvious when worn but glaring when off the head. The stitches are much less difficult for me to learn compared to my extreme confusion and frustration in identifying the first stitch to start crocheting into at the beginning of each row or round and the last stitch at the end of each row or round. I also get confused about whether to count what looks like a stitch on my hook. This video has been pretty helpful but the camera work was often blurry as the focus had to adjust and the work often slipped down out of frame for brief periods. Also, I would have found it a bit more helpful if a pointer or hook had been used to identify/count stitches rather than her thumb, and if the camera had lingered on where she was explaining where to start and finish. More helpful than many tutorials I've watched, but I will be looking for more tutorials that may spend more time on these points of confusion for me.

Thanks for the feedback Deborah! This is an older video and I completely understand what you’re saying. I hope that you find my newer videos to be of better quality. Also, if you follow the link in the description of this video, you’ll find a picture tutorial that is jam packed with a lot of useful information. I think you might find it better to follow.

Thank you for the suggestion to mark the last stitch on the half double crochet row. Finding it has been difficult for me, and missing it has cause me to accidentally put a decrease in my work. No more anxiety about making that mistake with the stitch marker.

Yes one of my favorite tricks for straight edges is to use those stitch markers!

Very clear directions, just one little suggestion though, let your beginners know how many stitches you have at the end of the first row.

At the 10:43 minute mark of your video disappears and it's not seen exactly where the ½DC stitch is made, 😞. Since this made for beginners it's tough to follow. I went back to other tutorials it couldn't follow and reproduce the stitch correctly. Some do SC into the front loop, back loop of then in the "back bump". There's no consistence of comparison between videos depending what loop is used on the foundation stitch to start a project, 🤷🏼‍♀️. So it's hard to differentiate between rows and back/front of stitch, 🤔.

Your stitching keeps disappearing from view on occasion... It makes it difficult to follow between the 10:43 and 12:55 minute markers with disappearing views, 😞. I know my stitches, it just helps to see how each tutorial author pics which part of the loop for use to start and end a stitch.
