I need to clarify that there is no strap attached to the guitar. Although I have used straps before, and kind of like them. All I use here is my standard setup: a non-slip cloth on my right leg. It's great for MY back, at least. That's why I started doing it. I also studied flamenco with Juan Serrano when I was a boy, which is where I became totally comfortable holding the guitar like this. It's not for everybody, to be sure! Just be comfortable and you'll last a long time. Pluck on!
The overwhelming majority of really talented guitarists watching this will still have no idea of the skill level required to play this piece this well. Just astonishing. And one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed.
I have always been enchanted with this piece played on a harpsichord, but you make it sound so natural on the guitar. One of the most haunting pieces of music that takes me back to an earlier lifetime. I really sense a memory from centuries ago when I hear this music. So beautiful, sad and mysterieuse!
Great sounding guitar and Scott.......you are ONE IN A MILLION. That's one of my favorite pieces and you did it proud. Love to watch your face whilst you are playing. Bravo.
Lovely. I have never heard Mr. Tennant in concert and I look forward to the opportunity. What I would especially love is auditing a master class from him.
Scott, this is a masterful performance. Also your ornamentation is breathtaking: crisp, sensitive, appropriate and technically flawless- to die for! Your flamenco background probably helped with your awesome facility with the ornaments. I am a Couperin fan and now also A FAN of Mr S Tennant! Unreal.
I love how clear this music is on the guitar. Thank you! Hearing it played on a harpsichord sounds muddy to me, but this is like clean, flowing water. The dear facial expressions are an added plus :^)
That would be the closest I have heard classical guitar sound like classical piano, even with the Baroque flourishes. I love how the guitarist smiles at the end, as if to say, "Oh yeah, I nailed that one".....beautiful job, Scott!
Yes, marvelous job. You should check out Christopher Parkening performing his transcription for guitar from some time in the 70s. Maybe the first transcription for guitar. Beautiful and crisp but amazingly fluid, amazing separation of bass and treble lines, and even better use of the full dynamic range of the guitar (but Parkening always pushes the instrument to the edge). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Stpw7r0Bn4M.html
Superbe interprétation précise et très musicale et je crois dans le tempo voulu par Couperin.Encore bravo pour ce moment.Vous jouez cette oeuvre avec facilité alors qu'elle n'est pas facile à jouer
How beautiful was that? Very, very well done Scott. You're a genius without any doubts what's so ever.. an ispiration for any guitar player. Thank you.
I really love Scott's version of this piece. Simply brilliant, Parkening's version always seemed too fast! This is such a great balance between speed and lyricism. I (gasp!) prefer it over Parkening's.
Thank you. I haven't heard this piece played on a Spanish guitar this well in 55 years! I had a room mate in college who was an electrical engineer who played this piece as exquisitely as you do. Thank you again.
&&Stuart Trusty&& discussing about taste or color is rather sensitive. i'm not a guitarist, not a professional one anyway! i liked s.tenant's rendition until the day i heard x.jara's. can you listen at him and write your comments? thanks! www.xavierjara.com/albumcd/
Thank you for posting this video. You played gorgeously. I was very touched by your artistry and I look forward to, eagerly, to all the other videos you will hopefully post. Thank you for posting this it was absolutely beautiful. G-d bless you. Shalom.
it's wonderful i don't know if i not prefere at the guitar than at the piano when we listening you ,i'm very touched by your play it's marvellous ,the tempo all is beautiful ,thank's for posting
Bravo, Scott! The first time I heard this piece was your performance - I think it was GFA Louisville KY. You walked out on stage, sat down with no comment, and played this captivating piece. Incidentally - having studied it for arranging for another instrument - I like your "pauses" at the conclusions of the rondeau & couplet sections - very true to the early Couperin publication - a bit of breathing where it makes sense. Thanks for this marvelous piece. Nice tempo.
Scott Tennant makes love to his guitar and plays this lovely piece, Couperin's 'Les Barricades Mystérieuses, soulfully. I especially love his smile at the end. Beautiful! Thank you. :)
i agree with mr. trusty, this is because the resemblances of the plucked strings and the advantage of the dynamics that the harpsichord does not have...and also because of this magnificent performance
incroyable, ce morçeau comporte 3 voix au piano, difficile à jouer (voir la version d'Ido Bar Shaî merveilleuse) cette interpretation est toute en retenue et élégance ,avec une sonorité proche de celle d'un harpsichord. Bravo!
bbspolidoro ..Yes, ,,Pumping Nylon,,is great DVD series.Scott is getting more fat and maybe Is good for Scott , to ,,Pumping iron,, some place In nice sport gym. Cheers.
It is one thing to get to all the notes....another thing to PLAY with musicality & tempo. This piece is as hard to perform as it looks...a beautiful interpretation🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵
I always liked Christopher Parkening's version of this piece...but this is just as great, very lyrical. I agree the Pumping Nylon book has some really good excercises for the left and right hand.
Scott Tennant. Loved it - and somehow I think Couperin would prefer the added volume your version employs versus others. Why the foam rubber under your right arm? Do you have a radial nerve injury like me or is it to control unwanted overtones? Best, Allan
i listened to another version here on youtube and no offense but that version was my favourite of all i can find here on youtube! I cant find it, and i think its a compilation video of classical musics played on piano.kinda sad because i used to listened to it when doing my french civilisation homework 😂
Well, I guess I'm eight years late to the party. Wonderful rendition and playing. Does anyone know what arrangement/edition of the piece Scott is playing?
Hi, I'd say it's his own arrangement, the notes are the same but the trills and some chord position are different from one player to another, the original is for harpsichord.
What an interesting and compelling version of this piece! I have listened to as many guitar versions of it as I can find. This was very expressive and powerful. I wonder what key this is in.
