@jamesomoz529 And the rest? If you have Nigerian, Ghana, Togo and Benin in combination then you're Yoruba which means you could easily claim any of those nations but mostly Nigeria/Benin
I urge everyone to read up on the Kingdom of Dahomey before celebrating this film. Prepare to discover the shocking reality of slavery and how it was not singlehandedly operated by European nations. The complicity of this crime runs deep and well beyond skin colour. Don’t let the media and Hollywood sanitize history.
The Kingdom of Dahomey was a major supplier of slaves to the Europeans. It supplied up to 20% of the total slave trade and provided the largest portion of Slave selling revenue for the king. This movie is just propaganda.
The Dahomey were brutal and violent slave traders responsible for up to 30% of the slaves in the diaspora. They would enslave neighboring tribes and sell them to white slavers. The Dahomey would practice ritualistic murder and decapitation with their captives if too many were caught to feed. There is an actual account from a slave here in the states who was captured by the Dahomey, sold, and brought here. To say their practices were horrific does not do it justice when you hear our ancestor's recount his story. You can feel the heartbreak in his words. To have a child of a slave play a role that glorifies her abuser is twisted. Read Baracoon : The Story of the Last Black Cargo. Also, research and read for yourself. The Dahomey were so involved in the slave trade the British Navel Forces closed their ports to prevent them from selling more slaves.
Yep, they were, and what does that have to do with a Hollywood movie portraying black warrior women? The same could be said the for million or so movie-star-led not factual colonialism movies that showed Europe and American colonies in a positive light, and we all know the brutality and slavery history of both continents!
@@alvinjohnson2402 so it’s payback then? Two wrongs don’t make a right and just proves we’re learning the wrong lessons. If the goal is to empower black women in the audience, it’s utterly tragic that we can find no better historical examples than the Dahomey.
@@vaporwave4880 When did every "Hollywood movie" become a barometer for "reality"? Ask yourself that question. There lies the problem with your flawed analysis! Social media (with fake accounts and bots) dictate to you what is good and what is bad. Whereas before you went to the movies and judge them off on your own experience. Btw, there are a lot of positive black romcoms on the Hallmark channels. Do you even take the time to watch them?
Dahomey’s fearless female warriors were called, the Minos. They had their own flag, insignia and marching band. When they seized an enemy, they decapitated him and hastened to brandish these severed heads as trophies and to scare the enemy away. “Win or die” was their adage. These terrible female fighters considered themselves braver and stronger than their male counterparts. As they passed, the population knelt down in recognition, gratitude and respect. The Minos were considered demi-goddesses. Nawi, the last amazon died in 1979 at the age of 100 after fighting French troops at the end of the 19th century
However there asses were whopped by bayonets historical facts African warriors with modern woman magic 600 vs 6 french soldiers This is the death count.
The Dahomey Amazons or the Mino are the only verifiable class of female warriors in History. Its a mixed history they were taken from the tribes of empire as children under 12 years old, they had to be big girls as big as the boys in their village. It was considered an honor for your village to have a girl chosen but these young girls never saw their families again. they were trained from childhood to be one thing warriors. To serve as the empires special forces and to guard the king. They could not marry and the only man they could have children for was the king. Their legacy is legendary however. The British forced their disbanding as part of the negotiations for peace with the Dahomey empire .
Well! Going by what you just wrote, I don't think any black woman who values her femininity will have any fantasies of being a Dahomey Amazon warrior. Femininity goes streight out the window once they commit to that craziness.
@@christopherduffy1703 I assume you mean white European femininity. You are imposing a foreign cultural standard on these women. While simultaneously imposing that standard on African American women. Who have never been able to afford that standard in a white supremacists culture. How about taking your boot off the necks of black women. They have enough to deal with without black men adding to their oppression
Well thats a lie lol the were slave masters and enslaved black people and sold them to the europeans untill the europeans put an end to the slavers trade and told them to stop and when they wouldnt they were massacred , they were pitiful warriors and even worse people .
It should be mentioned that it was the British and French who were working on ending the slave trade on the West African Coast between 1807-1867. The French joined a bit later, but also sent warships out to capture slave ships. The British lost over 1,600 sailors trying to end the Atlantic Slave Trade and managed to free over 150,000 Africans (5,000 died of disease before the resettlement process was completed). The same crusade was ongoing on the East African Coast in areas such as modern day Zanzibar. Roughly 2,800 Africans were resettled on the island of Seychelles by the British between 1860 and 1880. Charles G. Gordon, Governor-General of Sudan would became a martyr fighting against slavery. His efforts at stopping the slave trade include and punishing those responsible for castrating young African boys. He held the office between 1877 and 1879 and again from 1884 to 1885. It mentions his death and the slaughter of all 7,000 defending Egyptian garrison troops during the Siege of Khartoum in 1885 by forces lead by Muhammad Ahmad.
I like your reaction but to me the film's title is misleading as well as showing the amazon's being the only force of dahomey. They were the king's guards not the kings army so just showing the amazons fighting alone is silly when in reality the army would have been present. Their were actual african leaders who were women who literally waged war with europe,ya ya asantuwa of the ashanti being the most famous which would have made more sense if the film was about her since the dahomey never had a woman leader. And then we of course have to insert a interracial kiss/romance which would NEVER had happened during that time. No thanks. if hollywood cant do it properly dont do it at all. Sure people will enjoy it but i tired of hollywerid inserting things into our history when they make movies.
These women was job is to protect the king. The woman in the movie Black Panther was based on these women the Dahomey woman of Africa who fought off the French that was trying to take over Africa.
Yeah, but in some of these hospitals maybe that's why they claim Black women have a high threshold for pain and they don't try to give them pain medication or more help then the other women. Well that was long time ago and black women don't fit this bill anymore. Black women are women and not men.
They will always hate us. You don't see them dumping on "the proper color of Sultans shoes" or something like that in Arabian or Bollywood films do they. Nope. Just us.
I have mixed feelings about it.. 1 part think its great.. other part.. why is Hollywood so adamant about making black women masculine? its weird.. you can be a warrior and still be feminine.. IDK and I cant imagine our African men just sitting on the sidelines.. I feel like it will be a great film and it is based on fact but its a double edged sword.. a Victory and a Diss..
I agree to a certain extent… but then I love how they have a women leading, especially in the 18th/19th century when women were primarily caretakers & didn’t have a say. Any movie depicting us as Strong Black Women, I’m for!! Lol ❤️❤️
@@whittfamilyadventures6254 African culture/black culture has always been more egalitarian. A queen was never less in Africa.. in fact, alot of people dont know that many african queens like Inari Kunate, Mansa Musa wife, shared equal power, that is why it was not surprising the Dahomey used women warriors who made of 1/3 of their army. I will still check it out but I feel like its a double edged sword... that whole " we feel no pain " thing annoyed me especially since black women are often seen by doctors as being able to tolerate loads of pain.. Sh** i tell all the doctors I am weak and I cant take no pain.. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣.. and that they need to take good and gentle care of me 😂🤣😂🤣
These women were chosen at 12 from the various villages of the kingdom, because they were they were big, strong and somewhat masculine. The kings agents went to villages specifically looking for girls under 12 who were big and strong enough to be trained as if they were men. If a village had a girl who fit the description they sent word to the king because it was a great honor to have a girl chosen from your village
We are all called to,arms to watch this film of the most fierce female woman soldiers whoever walked the Earth the Woman King is going to be an epic saga true events , go read it the journey is deep of mixed history ! I look forward to seeing this film 🍿🎥🙏🏿🍿😎👍🏿🥳🧐✊🏿😘
This was actually a horrible tribe, nothing like they are portraying in this film. These people did human sacrifices, sold black people from other tribes to Europeans, and killed hundreds of innocent people. The French were actually trying to stop them from attacking villages and killing people. Please read the history, guys! It is so dangerous that people are rewriting history like this.
