It's a risk you take by being a canvas on the show. You get a free tattoo, but it might not be a good one.

Still bothers me that the artists (and the judges a lot of the time) don't care what the canvas actually wants or that it'll be permanently on them. And money isn't really "on the line", they don't lose money if they don't win.

I remember painting the confederate flag on a replica general lee when I was a kid. Didn't have anything to do with hate. It was just a flag I associated with rednecks from America and didn't think anything of it. Back in the day literally nobody talked about the racist aspects of the flag. Young people just don't get that.

It should be said that it is not at all hard to find yourself in a hate group. Even otherwise intelligent and well educated people have found themselves neck-deep in things they could never imagine themselves in. All it takes is finding yourself frustrated and angry about where your life is or where it's going. Anyone who validates that anger and frustration can lure you in to outright hate.

It's so annoying that most hate groups just steal "cool looking" symbols originally used by other (usually peaceful) groups. Eg; the swastica started as a Buddhist/Sanskrit symbol for good luck.
