Do you know how many non-black homeless youth there are in America compared to black youth? Then do you know how much help/sympathy each group gets from the nation? Do you have any statistics to prove your argument. If you don't please shut up and stop spreading bullshit and turning this into a race issue when this has nothing to do with race. I'm a volunteer jail chaplain and go into the county lock up a few times a week to spend time with guys just like this. I've heard his story a million times. The names and faces are different, but the sadness, desperation, and hopelessness are all the same. Some of the guys I've met in jail are the most real I've ever known. Strangely, the clarity that they can possess about life outshines the view that many people will ever know. But, that clarity comes with an enormous cost.

@Mark Hasbrouck and i guess that's why they say "ignorance is bliss", right? personally i only find myself utterly depressed when in the throes of addiction. i think depression is more an indicator of a chemical imbalance rather than intelligence but yes, i can also see and say some of the truly brilliant people i've known personally or admired through their work and artistic contributions have been those who've suffered major depression.

He does. I mean, most of the addicts I know can tell you all the nuances of types of drugs and their effects. He seems a lot older than his age, though, to me. Yeah, he’s seen a lot, but he’s able to keep things in perspective and doesn’t fall for a lot of the ego traps young people often do, that he’s really ballin or, “I can do it like that because I’ve got it like that,” “I do drugs. Drugs don’t do me,” and all that bs. He could easily rationalize his use because of his selling or his connections, but he’s honest with himself. I usually see that kind of levelheadedness in much older people.

I grew up in the same exact area as this kid, running around Philly and Camden. Full blown IV heroin addict by the time I was 17. Tried moving across the country to fix my problem - tried rehabs, halfway houses, AA/NA, quitting cold turkey, psych meds, anything to stop using. I finally quit using heroin October 1st, 2008. I can't tell anyone what will work for them, but I can whole-heartedly say that there is a solution out there for everyone, you just have to want it. For me, I had to finally accept that my thinking wasn't working, I needed help and I needed to actually do what others told me to do. After a year of sobriety I got a tattoo that says, "Turn your wounds into wisdom". I've got the scars, but those scars made me who I am. I firmly believe everything I've had to go through is for the best - I wouldn't be me without it. Life gets better, Josh, and anyone else who is struggling.

People really need to get educated about overdosing in general. It's too much for me to try to break it down in this comment. I O.D. off a DIME when I had a extremely high tolerance and was using on the daily for years. And it wasn't bc I got a hot shot or stronger shit...2 other people split the same bag with me and they were totally fine (and my tolerance was much higher then theirs) So yes y'all need to throw what you think you know about overdosing out the window bc its gonna ended up killing you or someone else spreading false information.

I hope he has the chance to keep sober long enough to discover what he and his life can be like. And discover the so many sources of pleasure, many of which are free of charge, free of even actively seeking for it. So many reasons, other than drugs, of emotions, joy as well as tears. Josh definitely can become a good man, a good husband, a good father. That's possible, slowly but surely, if given the time and patience. As he realizes that he is the only one that can start compensating for the love and compassion he did not receive from parents and grandparents, discover love and actively loving himself. He will start to feel love and compassion for that little boy that he was. Than that love starts to grow inwards and outwards. Then he can start to have some peace of mind and enjoy the countless gifts around.

It never ceases to shock me how much money addicts spend daily on drugs. There's a sad irony to the fact that these folks think themselves off the grid and out of the rat race, but in actuality their lives encompass sick levels of hyper consumerism.
@lalawnj41

Insane amounts of money. I could tell you things that would shock you. I received a very significant settlement from Wendy's for breaking my knee cap on a wet floor. Sadly, I was on pain medication and more from it. When I received my settlement I was in deep again. There is nothing more dangerous than an addict with a ridiculous amount of money at their disposal...

He is not interested in getting clean. In Orange County the rehabs take people off of the streets, sign them up for private insurance. Then they take the person in and get paid at least $10,000 for each person for 2 weeks at a time. Then they pay these people a chunk of cash to be there. They can do this every month for two weeks at a time, up until the person is 26, too old to be signed up on insurance on someone else's policy (parents). He is one these.

Sad, sad, sad, what chances a young guy like Josh did have to begin with? When at young age your mom tells you that she's s so deep into drugs, that you and your brother comes way after the heroin. Father in prison mother in and out of prison.. Really can we blaim a guy like Josh if he has chosen this path, or better the path was chosen for him. On top of that everything he does is illegal so there is the chance hell end up in prison at anytime. Who's gonna save this kid?

Unfortunately he has to save himself or the cycle will continue. He’s young, even though I’d always like to believe people can change at any age. I was on the street in full blow heroin addiction for 5 years. . . It wasn't easy but I got out of that life. Today I am reconnected to my family, friends and community. I have a home and a husband (and before Covid a job that I loved). I attribute a great deal of my success in changing my life to my family. My mom constantly championed for me, cheering me on and believing in me when I didn't believe in myself. Without her and my sister, brother, step-dad and dad I honestly don't know if I'd be alive today. So when I meet people like this I feel for them. Trying to find recovery without a real support system would be SO DIFFICULT. I hope he and his fiance can get into treatment and discover the joy that comes with being out if that hell. They can do it, but it will be hard...
