Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ru-vid.comUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

Thank you very much for making this video! Especially the part about tooth #11. I replaced mine today, I wanted to mention that the four bolts were pointing the other way on mine (remove it from the top as opposed to going under the mower). I reinstalled it the same way, added some anti-seize as well if ever this needs to be done again (hopefully not haha!) Thanks again!!

Used this video to repair my mower. Thx for the help! TopTip: In order to be able to use the original bolts, I tapped them into the steering unit BEFORE putting it in place. Cut in the threads with WD40 and remove the bolts. When you place the steering block in place you will be able to finger start the bolts. It will still be a bit fiddly but will enable you to use your wrench without too many problems. Result.

That looks exactly like what I’m gonna need to replace on my riding lawnmower. My steering cracks and pops when turning the steering wheel. Plus I have to put weight or pressure on the steering wheel itself in order to get my wheels to turn. But I’m gonna look at everything you showed me in this video to see what all is broken or worn out. Thanks for this enlightening video.

We just did a gas line replacement / petcock installment on our mower that looks like same model, wouldn't you know it it has the exact same turning issue, makes avoiding the trees a whole lot more exciting! Great video!

Thanks for the great video. I replaced the entire steering component on my 22 year old Craftsman this morning. The fix went without a hitch. Lawnmower seems to have power steering now it steers so well. One note: You had trouble getting the original self-tapping screws back into the new base. I ran the screws into the new base before I installed it into the mower. Then, removed the screws and kept them in line with each hole. I was able to just turn them in with my fingers from underneath, then, tighten.

This is a common problem with these older mowers. I think my mower is 18 years old, I bought it new. It's the EZ3 with a Kohler engine, it's been great!, but yeah I'm starting to have the same steering problem. Actually I just bought a new mower but I can't let old Betsy go. The Kohler engine on it is awesome! Thanks for the vid, I'm going to try and look for that steering assembly but it looks like others are having a hard time finding it online.

I love your video's but I wonder if that broken plastic collar around the steering access-way would have fixed it. Maybe just replace it with a oversized metal washer with a couple screw holes in it to keep the tension on the gearing. I know the answer would be even then "How long before it broke again ?" but just a risk with aging mowers sometimes you will take to save 80 bucks. As already stated, great focus and views on the problem parts.

awesome video. that is 100% the same mower I have, except I have a newer Briggs and Stratton 17hp engine on mine. that is definitely what's wrong with the steering on my parts mower, which is the same. the steering wheel on my main mower is really sloppy, and it is still that gear assembly. its nice to know I can get that as a whole assembly, I just disassembled the whole thing about 10 mins ago trying to figure it out. but it doesn't seem that is the main problem, I was actually hoping it was, it will not physically turn right when the full weight is on the tractor. it turns left great but even at full turn right the wheels lock solid after it turns the slightest little bit as it reaches the end of travel on that gear. but when you lift the front up it turns perfectly both ways. it doesn't look like the linkage underneath is bent. I miss my old John Deere, the wheels turned 90 degrees both ways, turned on a dime.

I would like to say I replaced it!......... but...... I plastic welded it and used extra screws to hold it together and in place. Don't tell anyone!

What is the name/number of that part that you replaced? My steering is way off, it will turn one way too far, and not far enough going the other way (my kid hit a tree and that was the result).

I have the same unit when I engage my blades its slipping or just not spinning the spindels any advice as to what is wrong, and the belts are all entacted as well.

those belts wear out and it is important to use the correct size Craftsman/AYP belt when replacing it

Ok I installed a new belt blade still wont spin. The pulley off the engine is pulling and both blade spindals free turn by hand the guide pulleys aswell, Im at a loss any ideas?

Make sure the actuator pulley (the pulley that moves to make the belt tight when you engage the blades) is working

HEY JEFF--I GOT THE STEERING JUST ABOUT APART--THERE 'S JUST ONE PROBLEM--I CAN'T GET THE BOLTS OFF THE STEERING BRACKET--THE BOLTS ARE HARD TO GET TO-I HAVE TO LAY ON MY BACK UNDER THE MOWER TO GET TO THE BOLTS, I HAVE TRIED WD40 AND NO LUCK--GOING TO TRY LIQUID WRENCH--AND IF THAT DON'T WORK, I'M GONNA DRILL THE BOLTS OUT, I CAN JUST USE A REGULAR NUT AND BOLT TO FASTEN STEERING BRACKET JUST LIKE YOU DID IN YOUR VIDEO--THANK YOU JEFF..

I have a craftsman gt5000 garden tractor with less then 100 hours . when it eas about 43 years old the you would be using it & after a little while it would just start slowing down till it stoped . let it set over night . & it would just do the same thing . can anyone please help thanks

I got a husqvarna yth180 steering is getting worn out not as bad as this still steers but, I am counting on having to redo steering eventually I know going through sears I buy those parts individual do you know where I got get a full assembly for a mower like mine I am mentioning? My gears and steering shaft the whole setup pretty much look the same as what you used on that craftsman

Sears Parts Direct does not stock or handle the complete unit anymore. Will try eBay and Amazon before dealing with a expensive mower shop.

I am replacing mine but when I bolt the linkage to the assembly it doesn’t turn. It strips around just like the old bad one. Help please

The upper bushing may be broken or loose that bolts into the dash. The steering shaft goes through it and it holds the shaft in place at the dash.

My craftsman is a plastic steering wheel..amazed at what pieces of sh** they put on these $1700+ mowers. Great video just the same...im frustrated at the prices too. Id think a gocart wheel would be better cheaper.

Could have just replaced the steering shaft support below the gear and the plastic collar on the dash, about $20. Same result.

This does not always work. I think it depends on how long the problem has been occurring. I just replaced the shaft support, the plastic collar AND the actual steering shaft and still having the issue so now I am looking at replacing the assembly like he did in this video...wish I had done that to start with now but live and learn I guess.

Screwed a screw into one side of that assembly on mine... pushed the gears together snug and turns again with no slipping. $0.02 repair.

Best to just replace the entire thing for $80 like you did instead of jaging around wasting time replacing a spacer or a part or two. Time is money...

Horrible design. BUT on the new models (like YT3000) they have changed to a dual linkage (short turn radius) type of steering that is GREAT! (but the ball joints will still wear over time and then the ball will pull out of the sockets) Still - replacing tie rods is way easier than replacing the main steering mechanism.

You worked to hard. You're not replacing the broken parts. You have a dry rotted fuel line, if you where going to replace the broken parts, you would have at least maintained your mower. Why am I going to to respect and take advice from someone who cant take care of his equipment.
