Karen is his wife, they lost their son Jerry in 2016 in a boating accident from drowning. Their faith has helped the family in the healing process. He didn't want to release this song, but others convinced him to, so that it would possibly help someone else. He sounds amazing live, I'd recommend watching him perform it either on The Grand Ole Opry, or on the Kelly Clarkson Show. The Kelly Clarkson Show also has an interview where he gives some back story.

He is a veteran, he did 9 tours in Afghanistan, he saved two children from a burning building, his son died tragically in 2016 and in 2019 comes back with this beautiful song, after performing it live at the Grand ole opry he said he'd never sing it again and was talked out of it

You are correct about him losing his son. His son drowned, at 19 years old, after a boating accident. You should check out Cole Swindell - You Should Be Here. He wrote it for his late father.

Craigs son passed in a boating accident. The first verse was him making excuses not to go out with friends because mentally and emotionally he didnt want to deal with people in his current state of mind. The song was written one night not long after his son had passed.

Check out his live performance of it either are the Kelly Clarkson Show or the Grand Ole Opry. The strength it takes to perform a song so full of emotion, expressing the most painful thing to happen to you, is beautiful.

@@reddhead2948 It's where you pull an intertube behind a boat. They make tubes just for this, but it can be dangerous. My daughter had her earrings ripped out of her ears when she hit the water tubing with her friend.

He was using excuses for a long time after Johns death to not go out because he was to broken from the death. He would sit outside every morning talking to his son and praying to god. He’s a very strong man.
