I think this clip beautifully sums up the Fifth Doctor. At this point, he can feel the end closing in on him: His body is aching in pain, his instincts are telling him to begin the regeneration process before it is too late, and yet he knows he can't do that now, not while his friend is in danger; he _must_ try his best to set things right first, even if the odds are stacked very highly against him and he risks permanent death if he holds on for too long.

This is possibly the best cliffhanger in all of Doctor Who's 50+ Years (in my opinion at least). Not only does it show that the Doctor is determined to do whatever he can within his power to save Peri, but at the start of the video you can see a type of pattern in the Doctor's eyes that resembles the energy of his regeneration. It's my belief that the Doctor was fighting off the regeneration for a *whole episode* in order to save Peri. That takes some serious resilience and courage.

So do I man. So do I... Instead what we got wasn't so much a Regeneration story, but a way for Moffatt to try and tie together as many loose ends as he could in the space of an hour before the new Doctor arrived.

I thought the pattern was a premonition of some sort.

I loved P.Davidson's regeneration, pretty much still think that's the best one to date - but as for cliffhangers, I still don't think it beats the nappy-browning 1st episode of Remembrance of the Dalek's, seeing the Dalek levitate up for the first time on screen (yes, it has been implied long before - but to see it as a kid, an armoured, lazer spewing pepper-pot flying up the stairs to kill the Doctor - adrenaline).

The Fifth Doctor was never written better than he was by Robert Holmes in this story. Four perfect episodes, if there were any justice Robert Holmes would have been knighted, he was by far the best writer to work on the series nearly every one of his episodes is a classic. I mean just imagine being able to write Caves of Androzani, The Talons of Weng Chiang, Spearhead From Space and The Deadly Assassin

I didn't think about this for years and years, but the use of sound in this scene is exceptional. The slowly accelerating engine sounds in the background, and the accelerating intensity of voices at the very end underscore the Doctor's urgency and determination. An exceptional cliffhanger for ANY era of DOCTOR WHO...

I love the effect you see from his viewpoint, the shimmering waves that fade into the viewscreen. It's the same effect they use when he regenerates later. Per Graham Harper, the director, that bit was to show that The Doctor's actively holding off his regeneration (ala' the 10th Doctor in END OF TIME) until he can save Peri. I love that, cause it's such a subtle suggestion of how selfless this incarnation was and his willingness to die to save Peri.

Wow, was the Doctor about to regenerate right there and he put it off? So, the Fifth Doctor delays his regeneration long enough to save Peri and the Tenth Doctor delays his regeneration long enough to bid farewell to his companions. STOTZ: All right, snoop. Hands in the air and over here. THE DOCTOR: Why? STOTZ: Because I'll kill you if you don't! THE DOCTOR: Not a very persuasive argument actually, Stotz, because I'm going to die soon anyway, unless of course - STOTZ: I'll give you to the count of three! THE DOCTOR: Unless of course I can find the antidote… I owe it to my friend to try because I got her into this - STOTZ: One, THE DOCTOR: So you see - STOTZ: Two, THE DOCTOR: I'm not going to let you stop me now! STOTZ: Three! Definitely one of Doctor Who's best cliffhangers.

He Doesn't put it off, in fact in his regeneration scene, he would've died unless he hallucinated the master, as the master reminded him evil still remained in the universe.
@AndrewChapman

***** But in the Talking About Regeneration documentary on "The War Games" DVD, Clayton Hickman, editor of Doctor Who Magazine mentions that we get a foreshadowing of the Fifth Doctor's regeneration in this scene. He comments that at 0:03, the regeneration effect is coming towards him and he fights it off. He then goes on about the whole of Episode 4 dealing with the Fifth Doctor surviving just so he can save Peri.
@AlexanderDiviFilius
@AlexanderDiviFilius 9 лет назад
Andrew Chapman perhaps, but by the time right before he does regenerate, he is going to die, the poison has had too much of an affect on him, the master pressures him to regenerate.

@Icarais69
@Icarais69 8 лет назад
I don't deny that he did quite a few good stories. (The eras starring Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker Peter Davison were those shown most consistently on PBS when I was a boy, and so I'm more partial to them, although each era has its own merits.) The writing standards tended to be best in EARTHSHOCK and THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI, but I can think of quite a few moments in his time that stayed with me: the pained way in which Tegan left in RESURRECTION OF THE DALEKS is just heartbreaking; Turlough's choosing the Doctor over power in the end of ENLIGHTENMENT; the moment when the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough are surrounded by corpses at the end of WARRIORS OF THE DEEP and the Doctor says, "There should have been another way." I started to move away from DOCTOR WHO (for a few years) around the time the Colin Baker era aired over here (and, from what I learned of viewer reaction in those days, I missed a controversial era that quite a few people feel irreparably damaged the show, but I've always thought of the Peter Davison era fondly...although, as I said, the writing at times could have been much better (but we can credit the producer with that, since he didn't want to hire the series' tried and true writers, and not the actors themselves, who were consistently quite good).
@UnchainedEruption
@UnchainedEruption 7 лет назад
Lol I have the opposite opinion. I thought Peter Davison's era was perfect on practically every episode, and one of the highest quality eras in Doctor Who in general, but I thought Caves of Androzani was fairly weak for a story. Not because of anything Robert Holmes did wrong, in fact this was actually one of his better scripts. The problem was JNT wanted to have Colin's first story at the end of the season which, along with a lot of other problems, caused Androzani to be shorter than it actually should have been and unfortunately the end result came off as a lot worse than it could have been. It had the making of a great story, but never actually did anything to warrant being one.

Have to admit I really do miss the cliffhangers. There's something so innately wholesome about the prospect of "How's the Doctor gonna get out of this one? Oh man I gotta tune in next week!" Granted some cliffhangers were better than others (*Ahem* The literal cliffhanger in Dragonfire) but I think a return to a serialized format would really make Doctor Who stand out from most TV in terms of its style format harkening back to a simpler time plus allowing the writers to really flesh out the plots and characterization.

Cicily S - The classic series by far has better storylines, better characterization, better drama/danger, better pacing, better acting, and better direction/filming despite an inferior budget, antagonistic leadership, and cult status. The new series has its few good moments, but they're all so packaged and soap-operay and bland. The essence of The Doctor has been lost and the show is the worse for it.

The doctor did all this to save Peri, basically a stranger to him at the time. The most noble exit of any doctor. No silly “I dont want to go” pantomime theatrics. Just pure bravery and courage

I wouldn't call it Pantomime theatrics, the tone was very different and echoed Tennant's real feelings (at least, that's what i understood.)

The whole “I don’t want to go” thing was to make the fans even more emotional when ten left

As much as I absolutely love this moment something has always bugged me about it. What exactly does Stotzi burn his hand on?
@zufgh

the implication is that the cutting gear heated up the metal too much for Stotz to touch the handle for a while

When he reached inside for the door's control panel he touched the molten metal of the hole he just cut in the door

Stotz and his notorious gang decided to deliver the Fifth Doctor to Morgus even though the Time Lord had developed the advanced stages of Spectrox Toxaemia which Stotz couldn't help having a dirty laugh about. Once on board the ship Morgus vented his anger at Stotz for being late aggravated by Sharaz Jek refusing to accept payment. Stotz was later spoken to by Morgus as a result of the Doctor messing about with the controls on the ship.

Peter Davidson is a far better actor than people give him credit for. He is an exceptional Doctor, and he proves this time and time again, here feels like his peak however. Davidson is an absolute powerhouse of a Doctor and I'm sad he isn't more respected in the role.
