We have a new jack Russell terrier and he is amazing! Day 2 he was ringing the bell to go out to do his business. We are using a crate at night. I, grandma, sleeps by the crate at night so he can see me. When he stirs I text my daughter who comes downstairs to let him out. Usually at 4 am. Then he's good until morning. He has resisted the crate but we started putting a bit of kibbles in it. He doesn't physically resist anymore. He is still vociferous after he goes into the crate. We are always home. My three grandsons take turns playing with him and by noon, he and they are ready to rest! I have him from noon to 2:00 to give the family a break. We are enjoying him so much! We will listen with interest to your videos!!!

Thanks for this. I met my boy yesterday. He’s 4 weeks old and ready to come home in late October. So excited to get into action with my Jack! They are a full on dog! I believe people who own JR’s have a little JR in their own personality!

@@lazerdicks43 Got my boy home now at 9 weeks. He’s going to be 13 weeks on Monday. This boy is a rocket and fuelled with something not yet known to mankind 😂. When breeders say do your homework on JR’s and make sure you are up to their lifestyle, that should be considered serious advice. Especially with a male-this little guy is full tilt! I adore him and his spirit. I hope you are an active person! Enjoy your Jackie.

Hey there, I just inquired on crate training my almost 3 month old Jack Russell and your video came up. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise bc I had no idea. I wasn’t sure if I should leave him inside the crate all night or not. He is definitely a whole handful lol but I’m in for the long haul. Thanks again and I look forward to learning more from you.

Thank you for all the information. I am getting 2 JRT puppies in 2 weeks. I have never used the crates before. I have owned 3 JRT in the past and have learned by my mistakes. Training on day one is critical. Thank you again and we are enjoying your videos. ❤

I just began watching your videos and I’m thoroughly impressed how you share your experience in an easy, understanding way. I’m picking up my new 12week old RUSELL TERRIER FEMALE PUPPY Friday, and yes, I bought a similar crate with comfy bed. Apparently I’ll start training on day one. My only concern is living in aCONDO with a new puppy, but we’ll work together on that! Thanks for great videos!

Love your videos. I’m a second time Jack Russell owner and my first was a great experience 17 years boy I miss her. My new baby habits are odd and I’m very concern because she becomes aggressive and attack/bits whoever comes close. Example when she become obsessive over a sock or whatever the object is and you not aware she obsessing she attack with full teeth and has bitten us. We are very good to her. She not in a crate all day only for sleep. We take her out about 4 times a day for 15 min walks and take time to play because I know they need lots of attention and exercise. We talked to a trainer and he advisers to either get a tennis racket or to keep her on a long leach because we need to take control. Have anyone experience this type of behavior? One again love your videos and thumbs up all the way!!!

Did the trainer say what the tennis racket was for and the long leash? That honestly seems odd
@lazerdicks43

15 mins seems very short as these dogs can go for hours on full. An hour in the park playing fetch will wear them out in the morning and another in the afternoon. Long hikes on the weekend etc. Can’t really speak to where the aggression is coming from as it also depends on the circumstances. Hope that helps.

I never have had a problem with him and a crate. I bought a very basic one from F&F (I think most IL people know where I mean, at least those in the farm belt LOL), and just left the door open. I don't remember if I rewarded him when he would go in there (he may have been told "Good Boy"), but I would just leave it open, figuring he would check it out when he was ready. We tried the sleeping in there deal, and he would be good for about 6 hours and then get all whiny, so I just gave up and now he sleeps with me (so I can get my hand bit - per a comment on another video). A decade on, the crate is HIS. I touch it for ANYTHING, there's at least whining and barking, and if I have to re-arrange the towel I use, I get one of those grip and grab things because he wants nothing to do with that. I used to keep the door open all the time, and I get your reasoning completely, but to me, he spends enough time in it. I go to work, he's in it. Family has to pass through the area, he's in it. I just got to the point where I closed the door after letting him out when I get back from wherever and was like "your free from being confined." Having said that, I can tell him to get in it for any reason and he's standing off to the side of the door so I can open it up and let him in. And he does get a treat when he has to get in there for any amount of time, which I know has helped reinforce the "it's a good area" bit.

Hi, enjoying your videos here in the uk. When you say don’t open the crate door all night on the first few nights should I take the Jack Russell out for a pee or just leave she in for the first few nights until morning and only take she out once the barking stops? Thanks for the videos they are very useful. Regards Simon

@TerrierOwner 3 года назад
No, you can definitely take them out to use the restroom and should. I simply meant don't give in and let them out just to get out or to be with you. Potty time only and back in the crate until morning!

Hi Josh, love your videos 👍🏻. My 15 week JR sleeps through the night in her crate, and during the day she,will go in there to nap for maybe an hour, still have the training to do in which we would like to go shopping, but my problem is, she is a nightmare when we eat our dinner, we put her in the crate with a kong, and few other toys, but after 2 mins she just sits there whimpering, or barking, or sits and just watches us for a min, then starts acting up again. Will she ever get used to being in there while we eat ? 🙈.

Hi I have a five month old. We got her at 9 weeks. Crate trained from the off. She was much harder to crate train than our other dog, but we got there. After two months of sleeping through night in crate she’s started to act up again. Like being back at square one. She’s never been good at being left alone in day. Still working on that. What should I do?

JAZI actually goes into the crate to relax, but she freaks when you put her in there for bedtime, or if I need to leave the house and can’t take her with me. Any suggestions? She’s only 3 months.

I have a 5 month old male Jack Russell puppy. He loves his crate at bedtime and sleeps from 9pm - 4am. I cover the crate with blankets and there’s pillows inside so he’s comfortable. During the day is a whole different story. He’s only in the crate for 4 hour periods. He pulls the blankets thru the crate slots and cries and howls. Then stops and falls asleep, then does it again. I put toys inside during the day but they don’t keep him engaged long enough. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

4 hours during the day is a long time , if he is happy sleeping in it at night that is pretty good.

Great videos and blogs!! Do you have any recommendations on a daily crate schedule for working from home JRT parents? My situation has shifted to me working from home and my 5yr dog is no longer in doggy day care. She’s getting lots of play and exercise with me home but makes it challenging to focus on work. I feel guilty leaving her in her crate, so hoping for expert advice on a schedule.

Josh, a friend has a 23-month old male JRT - his first dog and they live in an apartment. I have felt that he should crate train the dog because at night, he sometimes does his business in the house and then they are upset. Is it too late to effectively crate train this little guy? Also, what bone did you give her in this video? I think I've shown them that if he has something that is not healthy to chew on when he comes in from a walk/run, he is a lot less destructive and settles down to sleep sooner. Thanks!

Hey Josh, I’m a new puppy owner of a JR, I’ve watched a few different videos and urs r by far the best and most informative. Ur tips and tricks have helped me so much thus far. My Luna is 13 weeks and I was starting to get mummy guilt about create training (as a mum of two kids. I feel just as much guilt with my puppy lol). Question; When they go in their create, whether it’s for night sleep or if we have to leave her during the day, is it a good idea to put a Teddy or toy or a chew bone in there or No?????

Hi Josh! HELP!!! 😉 A friend of mine recently went to Tijuana for dental work and came back with a 5 week old Jack Russell Terrier. A week after having it she decided it was too much for her🙄. She was going to take it to the pound and I stepped in and rescued the pup. He is now 6 weeks old and I've taken him for his well ck visit. I'll need to wait 2 more wks to begin vaccines but I'm curious. Right now he sleeps through the night in a large dog pen. I have a crate like you showed in this video but I'm wondering when I should begin crate training him. He's he too young right now? Or is this the ideal age to start? Thank you in advance for any tips you can give me.

Which room should you place the crate?
@TerrierOwner
@TerrierOwner 3 года назад
I would say this depends on the home. I personally place my crate in a room right off the kitchen. It was originally a dining room that has become more of a dog "all purpose room" Place it where they won't interrupt your sleep and they won't be stimulate by too much of the commotion in the house. I will also queue this question as up as a valid question to make a video about because I'd imagine this is a very common question new JRT owners have.
