CRAZY Microgreen Density!! Broccoli Seed Density Experiment

🤔How dense can we seed Broccoli Microgreens on a single tray without running into any crop issues such as mold, damping off or other crop failures? Which can happen very easily whenever to much air circulation is cut off from the canopy being too thick / dense. 🤪
➡️In this video, we decided to try growing 4 trays of ever increasing microgreen seed densities to find out at what point it is no longer efficient or healthy for the grow. We also wanted to figure out if these new green Sprouting trays, typically used for growing sprouts could produce the same amount of product, if not more then the 10x20 trays from bootstrap farmer that we typically like to use for growing Microgreens, even though they are half the size.... 😄

LOVED the video! Long live science. I grow for myself, not to make a living. Your efficiency measure was produce per amount of seed. For a commercial grower other important metrics would seem to be produce per cubic foot of grow space; and/or produce per minute of human-labor time; and/or produce per amount of coco coir used. All three of these "costs" (unlike seeds used) do not increase as you move to higher densities. Such additional metrics as these would make your higher densities look even more attractive for commercial growers!

Yeah, I cringed too when he did that. It was like 500 microscopic garden hoses all getting irreversibly kinked at the same time. If you must put em down briefly anywhere besides the tray, put them inside the lid rather than crushing the roots.

I have been using these Treys for six months, they are great fro the homeowner. Only thing I don.t like is light goes through if you use one as a black out cover. We do 4 treys every 4 days or so and have a constant supply of greens. There is also a deeper version of this same trey which I use for very tall greens

I seed 30 grams in a 1020 tray and have great growth and never any problems with damping off or mold. I live in Az so humidity is low on average and I also have lots of airflow in the grow space. I also do canopy spreading when I water my trays, basically I use my hands and spread out the canopy so light and airflow can get down in the space where it normally wouldn't. This I think helps with problems but also helps to increase yield by getting light to those small seedlings that aren't getting as much light and end up smaller and staying yellow. Great videos and information, love the experiments!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 года назад
The tray #2 is the equivalent of 30grams per 10x20 tray and it was the winner we chose out of this group, so good to hear you’re getting similar results with it! I will have to try some canopy spreading on a new grow and see how it works out... we have a current test running where we left “aisles” open between the seeds to allow airflow through and I’m curious how it will turn out. I’ll try out the canopy spreading to see how it works in our growspace... thanks for sharing! 🤗🌱🌱

Hi Thanks for posting a very informative video.. Trays are the same I have started using, though my growth has not been as fast as yours. My few questions , will be grateful if you could answer to improve my productivity 1. I tend to get mould around cluster of seeds.? how to avoid the same. 2. How wet the bed should be, physically touching the coir it always seems moist, Should i leave more time within watering 3. Growth of my microgreens seems much slower than what we see in your videos. 4. Can i re use the coir after the harvest. I know you mentioned briefly in this video but please explain in length sometime. Many thanks .. Super work i follow your uploads regularly.

Wow, I just finished a similar test as your first two trays with broccoli and peas. My results were similar to yours. It surprised me the higher density one did so much better. Didn't try the +100% and +150% densities due to concern they would have mold issues. Right now, I'm trying to replicate your indoor vs outdoor experiment. Next, I'll be experimenting with aluminum foil to reflect light. I watched a couple videos on how to prevent seedlings from becoming leggy using this technique. That got me to wondering whether bouncing light around using wrinkled aluminum foil would produce better results for microgreens.
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 года назад
I love hearing that people are experimenting themselves! Thanks for sharing!! We’re actually about to start some more outdoor grow trials before doing another indoor vs outdoor. Excited to see the results! Yeah, reflectors can really help to increase the yield on your crops and prevent the leggy growth. Would love to hear your findings when you finish up your tests! 🤗🌱🌱

I really like the analysis, CJ. I noticed water dripping off the roots when you were harvesting. Is that good? If you were able to increase air flow might that help with moisture as well as strengthen stems? How many hours/day do you provide light? Do you have a cost and break-even analysis available? If a grower is limited on space and having difficulty meeting demand, it might pay to increase density. How do you two package and market? Enough questions and comments!

OMG, I thought it odd why tray 4 would be so much taller than tray 1 (broccoli microgreens) and you make perfect sense. Yes all of the seeds in tray 4 are fighting for more space & light which explains why they are more "leggy." Great call Hal & for sharing your wisdom : D

In this video you basically showed that a 1020 tray with 30 grams of broccoli seeds would be "better" than one with 20 grams, but in your table (recently downloaded) the suggestion is still 20 grams per 1020 tray. Put some fish tank gravel in each bottom tray to reduce the needed water, it is inert and reusable. Also if you want to convert to a basic aeroponics/swc hybrid you can run small air stones in each to create aerated nutrient solution and a mist to the root mass (provided by bubbles of air popping). The gravel would help to keep these stones in place too, although there are other ways. Air would help reduce fungal problems too as it would be forced, in some proportion, up through the media

Thanks for testing these trays. As a home hobby grower, these are the easiest for me. Don't much like that the coir can drop into the lower tray, and have considered using something like paper or cheesecloth between the mesh and the coir. Will the radicles or roots be able to penetrate a paper napkin or cheesecloth to get to the bottom water? Looking for easier cleanup for my living room windowsill setup.
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 года назад
You can absolutely use a little paper towel or something to stop that from happening! They come with like a really thin paper for germination. I’ll start a new test trying them out with the coco and the paper to see how it grows! Generally, as long as the coco or medium is decently saturated, you shouldn’t see it drop through like that. Mine was a little too dry when I put it into the tray and that’s how we had so much drop through. You can also just use paper-towels instead of Coco and you’ll no longer have to deal with the mess! Got a video coming out Monday on using paper-towels. Thank you for your support! 🤗🌱🌱

I’d like to see comparisons between the types of trays. The first vlog I saw was the larger trays which had no issues or negatives. Can you compare them percentage wise for quality and harvest per sq inch. I’m asking because I’d like to know which tray product is better. The small trays seem to be lessor of the two. Cheers from Canader eh!
@pearlverdun
@pearlverdun 4 года назад
My notes. The new mesh trays may have exposed roots more vs the normal holes trays. Also the trays were weighted in the same order ie tray 1 at bottom, tray 2 next etc. This means lower trays had more weight each time than top trays. Other observation was there seemed a fair amount of water left in trays 3 n 4. Maybe it couldnt get through as denser structure of seeds....but then plants would be dried out so that doesnt make sense. Or maybe (likely) mesh tray needs less water adding at each stage

I have regular vegetable seedling trays, would i be able to grow kale and pea shoots in those? is it better if i fill the soil to the top since its higher than the regular microgreen trays so that it is easier to cut?
