I did a sideways winch a few weeks ago. I was sliding off a snowing road and needed a sideways pull for just a few feet. So, I really liked watching this video ! On a side note, I've been reading through the Factor 55 Recovery Guide book. Of course, they advise all correct safety procedures and correct principles. Keeping this in mind, there is a passage in the book I like that states: "What works is what counts."

The push for "safety safety safety" has seen a big movement through the likes of 4WD Action videos and others to "not" use snatch straps. I've done the same thing, got a bit to much "on the side" in a rut. Rather than use the winch rope use a snatch strap off to the side if another vehicle is available. Under tension it provides the side load needed to prevent a roll. Activate one or both of the magic switches (lockers) and drive out. Love the transparency of what you do Mat. Really like the give it a go, and if it doesn't work, trying something else attitude, and that you don't edit out the trial and error bits 😁👍

Great Video Madmatt! i'm using winch rope that i bought in amazo, the miolle brand. And it was awesome very good product. Used it with a early K5 Blazer and early 4runner, It holds up really well.Very pleased

In your first attempt, if you have recovery points on that ARB bumper out on both sides like most of us Americans do, if you hang a snatch block on the right side of the bumper, go from the winch to the block and the pull would have been more from the right corner of the vehicle which would have pulled you up and out. Pulling from the center as you did caused the vehicle to want to tip and caused the front tire to dig rather than roll. It's an old rigger's trick. A small change in angles is often a major change in the way things pull. I may not be a formally trained recovery guy, but I've needed to pull myself and a ton of others out of some really sketchy places. I like to have any others that are with me give their opinions before making a final decision, but I want to be the one responsible because I have far more experience.

Hi, i love the fails with the following recoveries, thank you for that! I would wish to see a „walkaround“ of the situations, in general. Whould be backing up a little while hard left steering in this case be helpful to get the front a little bit more level? Best wishes from Bavaria

Would it not of been easier to winch it out backwards instead of forwards? Either way that was an epic recovery lol.

Would've been messy if the rope broke, quite a load on it when your front suspension compressed right down and the only point of give was the 80 being dragged back. Very impressed that you got it out.

Hey matt and 4 wheelers out your way. I see sherpa winches are being sold here in the us. They look like military grade hardware. Any experience with them? I had a warn. Would go to ends of the earth with them. Thanks
