Cream/Blind Faith Drummer Ginger Baker Dead at 80
October 6, 2019 - We had just heard that Baker was critically ill in hospital. He told Rolling Stone magazine in 2013 that performing live left him exhausted because of his degenerative osteoarthritis and COPD from smoking. In 2016 Baker was forced to cancel a tour with his band Air Force band and underwent open-heart surgery.
He was named Number Three on Rolling Stone‘s “100 Greatest Drummers of All Time,” Baker a huge figure in Rock and Roll history, cofounding Cream with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce in 1966. They only released four albums between 1966 - 1969 with their last LP “Goodbye” coming out after the band had broken up (the previous year)
Eric Clapton Told AXS-TV that he'd seen Buddy Guy play with a trio and thought that's what he wanted to do. Cream had six Top 40 hits including “I Feel Free,'” "Sunshine of Your Love,”(featuring that famous bass line created by Jack Bruce) and “Strange Brew” but they were much more than a hits band. Their third album “Wheels of Fire” was the world's first Double platinum double album. With all three members singing in the band (even though Bruce and Clapton did the bulk of the singing) they were one of the world's first rock supergroups.
'Disraeli Gears,” their second album was their masterpiece described by Chris Jones of the BBC as "a perfect encapsulation of the point where the blues got psychedelic and in turn got heavy" while Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic describes the album as "a quintessential heavy rock album of the '60s". In 1999 “Disraeli Gears,” was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame and in 2003 it was ranked No. 114 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time,
After Cream Baker joined Clapton in Blind Faith with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. They would only release one album - the self-titled project from 1969 which featured the Winwood classic “Can't Find My Way Home.” Baker would write the last track on the album, “Do What You Like.”
In 1970 Baker launched Air Force where he spent years living and recording in Africa.
He was born Peter Edward Baker on August 19, 1939. He was 15 when he first got behind the kit and was a pioneer in mixing jazz fusion. World and rock drumming. He was also known for his long solos. As a member of Cream, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993.
Ginger Baker was one of the first superstar drummers with a larger than life personality. His style influenced John Bonham, Peter Criss, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, Bill Bruford, Alex Van Halen, Danny Seraphine, and Nick Mason.
Neil Peart said: "His playing was revolutionary - extrovert, primal and inventive. He set the bar for what rock drumming could be. [...] Every rock drummer since has been influenced in some way by Ginger - even if they don't know it". - by John Beaudin

I saw Blind Faith at Bridgeport stadium in 1969 ... I was then 14 years old ... Gingers solo lasted 20 minutes! My friend got one of his broken sticks ... Ginger played so hard that he’d throw them, grab a new one and keep on with the beat. Amazing to watch! He will be missed but not forgotten. RIP

In early 1970, I went over to my pal Luis Melim's place. We were both 13-year old drummers and had been playing quite a few years. With great excitement, Luis pulled a 33rpm out of a sleeve and said, "Hey, all those other drummers we listen to are fine, but you've GOT to hear this guy!" The album was "Fresh Cream" and the drummer was a fellow I'd never heard of - Ginger Baker. When Luis played the track "Toad" I knew my musical life and direction had changed forever. Ginger didn't just play rock like Luis and I; he combined rock, jazz and African rhythms. I spent endless nights listening to the Wheels of Fire version of Toad and practiced it until I got most of the parts down. It took months of effort. Ginger's musicianship was a huge influence on me, and in 1990 I finally got to see he and Jack Bruce play in concert twice. Watching Ginger play Toad live was magical. Rest in peace...

I heard this morning about Baker's death and immediately talked with my oldest brother, who is 16 years my senior and 750 miles away and told him the news. He informed me that he heard. But my story about the Cream is I'm now 50 years young and around my 13th birthday my brother gave me the Doors, Soft Parade and the live Cream album. Most of my albums were hand me downs from 4 older brothers who were alive through the 60s and 70s. I knew and heard both, the doors and cream but didn't know a single song on the live Cream album. But as I opened the wrapper and place this flawless mark of history onto the turn table and gently placed the needle on the first song on the A side I didn't know what to expect but the song N.S.U. opened up and I found myself memorized all the way though the A side. And wondered how 3 people could make so big of a sound. I've been a fan ever since and the music never gets old. I thank God my brother didn't give me an Abba record, who knows how I would have turned out .

One of the qualities that stood out to me about Ginger Baker was his innate creativity- where most drummers would approach the non-filler, "regular" sections of songs in a standard or mundane manner, Baker had a knack for reinventing the playing of these main song sections. As his life progressed, his sense of creativity became even more pronounced. On the Cream reunion album from Royal Albert Hall, you can really hear Baker's extreme creativity on overdrive, yet still applied tastefully. If I had to give a musical comparison, Baker was like the Max Roach of rock music. RIP Ginger Baker.

I saw Ginger play in a small club in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the late 80’s. As a drummer I was fortunate to be on his left side. I could everything he was doing, all his footwork as well as his hands. I was euphoric. Well, I think Ginger took my excitement for something different as during the show I would see him periodically look to his left and glance at me, I was only about six feet away from him. Then, on one of those quick glances, he gave me a glare that scared the crap out of me. I thought he was going to come off of his kit and come after me. But still one of my greatest nights. He was the master. RIP Ginger. P.S. Ginger wasn’t a co-founder, he was the founder and band leader. No.3 in Rolling Stone? That’s why I never read Rolling Stone.

I saw Cream in Philly in front row seats, folding chairs that were approximately 10 to 15 feet from the revolving Spectrum stage, about 6 feet high. Nothing in front of me but bare concrete floor. It was the fall, maybe November. Filmed it on a wind up spring driven Bell & Howell 8mm movie camera, in color, silent film, about 5 or 10 minutes long. The band I was in had a German kid from St. Louis, a stocky, short, barrel chested kid who played a Fender Precision bass and sang in perfect key with a smoky Jack Bruce voice, a Greek kid on a gold top Les Paul who had long boney fingers twice as long as my fingers, and another German kid on electric piano and a Gibson cherry SG and back up vocals. I was on silver sparkle double bass Ludwigs. We started out as "Fantasy", then "Graham Savage", then "Stigwood James". We did Cream, Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Byrds, Stones, CSNY, and a double time version of Thrill is Gone. I of course did Toad. We were good, and right when it was ALL HAPPENING, in what rock historians call the golden age of rock. Not like the junk that passes for "music" today. I have a mahogany Sonor set now, black with chrome, that sounds like milk chocolate, and I can still play very well.

Immediately after he stood up, exhausted, he was doubled over as he grabbed his stomach. He then went behind Eric's amps for a moment, and came back out, totally fine for the rest of the show. All during the solo the crowd chanted 'Toad!!"

Mr. Baker is recognized and receives so many accolades for his (very brief) part of Cream, and this of course is totally understood. I was recently reminded of Ginger's earlier roots as part of the "Graham Bond Organization", an extremely influential jazz band of the '60's. There he was in an old photo, in the back, with among others, none other than the great John McLaughlin. I think it is very important to recognize, and honor, Ginger's roots in this genre, because this is where is style evolved, and it is this very style of his playing that was in fact the basis for his huge worldwide influence on so many drummers who followed. I think Ginger really could be considered as THE original "fusion" drummer of the age. "The King is dead. Long live the king."

With all respect to Keith Moon and John Bonham, Ginger was an all-round musician, and was the ONLY rock drummer of his day to fight drum battles with famous jazz drummers such as Elvin Jones and Art Blakey. Ginger respected them and they respected him. Ginger won those battles according to the audiences, who might have been biased in favor of the rock star. But his willingness to get up on the stage with the likes of Jones and Blakey speaks for itself.

The one and only time I saw Cream and Ginger Baker was back in 1968. It was in CT at the New Haven Arena. Great show and great drummer. Too bad he passed.

I'm a 63 year old drummer...loved ginger..he had balls, no bushed, told the truth and was great...thanks to you ginger...he could play match or traditional grip..Keith moon or John Bonham could not...they were awesome, but as ginger once stated either one of them could have swung a bag of shit...referring to playing swing...much respect for ginger. Rip .

I love how people think that he's above Bonham or Moon simply because he played differently

I saw Ginger Baker live at the Ceder Club in Birmingham UK , the same night as two birmingham rock legends , Steve Gibbons and Trevor Burton came down to give him a shout ! The Cedar is long gone but it was great to see the love and support, I had a brief chat with Ginger which is kind of etched in my memory !

One of the greats who understood that less is more, the quality of the finished song comes first. After I caught his documentary I liked it so much and reached out to him on Facebook with stories of listening to songs like “Dance the night away” in the early / mid 70’s and pulling those sticks that keep the bottom of your window shades straight out and laying 3 fake leather sofa cushions on the floor and playing along as an 7 or 8 year old etc. He responded the next day with “ Ha Ha good story, thanks for the support “ and included a link to his book. There never will be another Ginger Baker, for better or worse what you saw is what you got and if you didn’t like it, let’s have a go or get out Lol. R.I.P. Sir...

Terrible loss for music. Am so sorry about the pain he endured. I know I will get bad stuff, saying it was his own fault, you know what? That was th e times we lived in , in the 60 s. Get over your selves people, that don't have any sympathy. I absolutely sympathize for Ginger Baker. An absolute Icon.
