You can easily create digital files (vectors and image files) using Inkscape and public domain websites. In this tutorial, I break down how you can grab free old magazine images that are legal to use (they are public domain). This is my method for creating a vector/svg file, export a png file and create high-quality graphics for sale on any digital platform. These also look great on print on demand websites (Redbubble, Teepublic, etc.).
Inkscape is a completely free vector software tool similar to Adobe Illustrator. You can download it here: inkscape.org/

Excellent video as always. Thank you for all you share with everyone. It is so helpful. I was surprised at the reference of using Paint. I have used that a lot and I am learning Inkscape, Afinity and Silhouette apps. I love your tips.❤❤

Thank you so much. Inkscape helps a lot for upscaling. Moreover it is a black and white image. So we can trace image as a vector then we can do upscaling. The image won't get distorted.

Just so I understand this right (because I can't believe it's this simple) you can dig through old public domain magazines select images vectorise them and then sell them on sites like Etsy? if so that's pretty awesome.

Extremely helpful, thank you! This streamlines the whole process for me, from Affinity Designer to Inkscape, I finally get the whole process. Just one question, even though there are still a LOT of nodes left in this design, are customers going to be able to handle that for cutting in Cricut or Sillouette?
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
Yes that is a great question and it really depends on what the customer wants to do with the SVG file. If they want to use it strictly as a cut file, then I try to make sure that the SVG has minimal nodes. If the image is complicated (and I don't want to reduce the image down), then I will put a disclaimer in the listing that this is NOT FOR CUTTING. People buy SVGs for all sorts of reasons (they might want to make a tattoo design or a mural or use it on a website) so I try to make the design with the fewest nodes without it looking bad. Hope that helps!

Very helpful. Thanks I used to think in the USA art, images, books, music, etc would become public domain at 75 years, then I've seen 100 years, did a quick Google search and saw 120 years. Now take in if the copyright is owned and renewed etc could still be copyright protected. Not taking these outlier examples what would be a good rule of thumb?
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
It's a great question and you are right - with different countries, public domain can be different (and we are basically listing globally). For me - I stick to sites like Comic Book Plus or Rawpixel or in this case, really old magazines. I steer clear of ANY trademarked items in the magazines (so I would not pick an old Coke bottle for example or a Barbie doll advertisement). And then I also wonder "what are the chances that someone is actually going to track me down and lodge a complaint". So in this example, these old magazines are out of print, the publisher is defunct... chances are that no one is going to get wound up that I am taking a picture of a fox inside the magazine. That is how I think about it anyways!!
@eva_p
@eva_p Год назад
Wow very cool. How would you describe this in a listing? Do you say it's from a vintage magazine (or anything about its source) and quote the year or keep it generic?
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
Yes good question - I typically list what it is and then the word "vintage" - so for example "vintage women" or "vintage car" or "vintage cartoon", that sort of thing.

Hi ..just found your channel . Great video . New to this so forgive the questions but when u sell these files what are they listed as ? And what do the customers do with them ? Also if I’m making digital art on mid journey that I want to sell on Etsy do I need to run it through the same process you just did to get those 4 files to compress ?? Hope that wasn’t confusing lol.
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
Yes those are great questions. On Etsy, they would be listed as a digital product (and typically have "vector" or "SVG" in the title and/or description. People typically use vectors for websites, print on demand or for "cutting" with a digital cutting tool. I did a walkthrough of a machine that I own that uses SVGs, hopefully that helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DdbWnVUVZjQ.html

Thanks, this is good to know. I have a question. Do you know if the old ads in these magazines are also public domain?
@craftystax
@craftystax 5 месяцев назад
It's a great question - I would say yes generally they are, except for anything that is trademarked (like a Pepsi advertisement for example). I would personally steer clear of those!

I've downloaded several vintage SVG images and want to put them on my tote bags with Printify. Can you tell me if I can convert the file type to either png or jpg, which are the only two types I can put into PlaceIt to create mockups. I have Inkscape and can open these files there, but then what? Are they not useable for POD products? Thanks from a loyal newbie.
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
Hey there - I have to admit I'm not super familiar with Printify or PlaceIt. But generally, a PNG file is the one you want. A PNG file has a transparent background (so it looks good on a product). Typically in the Printify screen you would upload your PNG file and then "place it" where you want the image to sit in real life on the tote bag?

Is it possible to sell ai generated as digital download? Any issues with quality or how would you turn ai generated art into a download? Than you for your content. I’ve been learning how to create really cool abstract ai art with descriptive promps and now I’m wondering if I could do this with the creations.
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
That is an interesting question - you certainly could sell AI-generated art as a digital download. It would really depend on what the customer wants to use the digital download for (like typically an SVG vector file is used on a cutting machine so it would be more complicated to make a vector with AI, but not impossible).
@joecoz26

So what if some else did the exact same image from the public domain? And started selling it before you and put a commercial licensee on it. What happens legally exactly?
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
Great question - if you are selling it on your own website, then no one cares. But if you & someone else are selling the exact same design on Etsy, then the 2nd uploader runs the risk of getting a copyright strike. I recommend changing something about the public domain image to make it unique.
@user-kg8xx7jc3o
@user-kg8xx7jc3o Год назад
If you change these public domain images to a vector, can you then copyright them because they are altered? Anyone have any info on that?
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
You certainly could register the copyright for any piece of art - realistically, the government agency isn't going to know (or care) whether it is based on a public domain piece of art. There are examples of public domain artwork that has been modifed and then a new type of creative commons is applied to it, so it is definitely possible.
