Blueprint artwork is an in-demand product that looks great on the wall, t-shirt or coffee mug. There are many Etsy shops that successfully sell blueprint artwork featuring vehicles, weapons and all sorts of engineering specifications. In this video, I do a walkthrough from start to finish designed for the complete beginner on Photoshop.
This is a tutorial designed for artists who are interested in making artwork either for personal art projects, or commercial products like Redbubble, Etsy, Teepublic, Merch by Amazon - or even your own website like Shopify or WooCommerce.

Hint -Uncheck the contiguous box at the top when using the magic eraser or wand tools and it will add all the other pockets of white.

if you hold down "Alt" while moving the slider in the "Blend If" section of the layer properties panel then the the light or dark handle splits in two and gives you the option that is more like a gradient.

Rather than having to download the image to get the color code for the background, you can add a color picker extension to your browser, that allows you to obtain the hex code for any image on a web page. I use ColorZilla in Firefox, it works great.

That's a good question - typically I stay away from anything that is trademarked (like a Porsche). I would recommend looking for public domain assets (like military vehicles, space shuttles, historical vehicles that are no longer in service, etc).

You definitely can do the basic blueprint design right in Inkscape (you would just have a basic background & export the whole thing as a PNG or JPG. The Photoshop part really is just to have a metallic or adjusted background (sort of an extra step if you so choose).

Awesome video been following you for a while and always learn new stuff, are the blueprints public domain ? Thanks and keep 'em coming 👍
@craftystax
@craftystax 3 года назад
That's a great question - stuff like a Pontiac Firebird would not be (because the intellectual property is owned by a car company) but stuff like tanks, airplanes, military - that stuff is all public domain. (It might not SAY it, but no one can own the image rights to an M16 rifle for example or a Soviet Tank). So I can't guarantee it, but I've never personally seen a copyright claim on a military blueprint. Plus you are changing it enough anyway that it's generally considered unique.

@@craftystax This info is incorrect. There is automatically a copyright on any image that someone creates or a photo that someone takes. So there is a copyright on these blueprint images. It doesn't matter how much you change the image, it's still not allowed if they have a copyright that don't allow you to rework the image. The only way you can use it, is if the copyright owner (the creator) explicitly allows it or if it has been long enough so the copyright has expired (it's now in the public domain). A lot of times there's also a difference between creators that allow their images to be used for commercial and non-commercial use. This just relates to copyright of the original image, but there're also trademarks you need to consider. If you're for example making an image of a Porsche you're not allowed to use the name Porsche on any of your commercial works since that name is trademarked (this means: not on the image, not in the title, not in the description, not in the tags, etc.). If you're giving advice on POD and graphic design please inform yourself about copyrights and trademarks.

Zen, when I am using this website if I click on the actual image or if I right click on the actual image it's only giving me the option for a gif. Am I missing the option to make this as a JPEG for download? Thank you so much for your help and I greatly appreciate you pointing out opportunities like this!
@craftystax

Yes good question - I have found that most of the files on the site are GIF files. They still work in Inkscape - you just open the file and trace the bitmap (even though you are technically tracing a GIF).

I am sooooo trying this. One thing I cannot figure out is how to make this look good on a shirt? Square or rectangular photos/art sometimes looks bad or forced on a T-shirt. I've tried putting a 'picture frame' around it, or giving it tattered kind of edges, but this would probably detract from a blueprint image.
@craftystax
@craftystax 3 года назад
Yes that is a great question. One option would be to just have the design be white (with a grid) and then have the shirt itself be a dark blue, black or grey shirt - the shirt itself becomes the background. Dark blue shirt usually looks great. - Zen

Hi Gnothi - yes I can't see your computer but you could try "save as" if that is an option - that will open up the location on where you are saving files. Some web browsers have this set automatically (which can be tough if it's not where you want the file to be saved). Hope that helps! - Zen

I personally steer clear of trademarked items, and you can make a claim that you are significantly changing the underlying blueprint design to create new artwork. (Not everyone is comfortable with this but to me, there is a difference between using a design to create a completely different work and just reselling it).

Generally speaking, if you are significantly changing the work, you are creating your own artwork and any base design would have a hard time legitimately saying that you took it. I am not aware of any copyright or trademark on general military vehicles (but some cars would be trademarked).
