In this video, I show my process for creating a 3 point turnaround for a Granny character. Turnarounds can be difficult if you start with detail. What I recommend is breaking the character down to its volumetric shapes FIRST. Turn those shapes around THEN add detail once you are happy with the proportions.

Speaking of taking advantages of digital you could put the arms (or capes or hats or other accessories that may block some specific detail to the body or outfit) on a separate layer in the final inks. That way you could just turn off the layer instead of having her dismembered and her arm floating there. Gives you an idea what it looks like attached without needing a separate drawing like you would on paper. It's something I've been thinking about as I want to start doing more turnarounds. So good timing on this video, it gave me ideas. :)

Thanks for another great tutorial on how to approach the character turn around. I do have one critique though. The arms seem a lot longer in the turn around than the actual reference. Perhaps that was an artistic choice you decided to make, which isn't a bad thing. I just thought the arms shlould be shorter. Other than that, it was a great video. Thank you.

Thanks! I'm using a custom brush that I made from scratch. If you like this brush, I have a video on my channel . Search "making a killer inking brush". :)

I don’t know how big to make my canvas.

Pick a comfortable size. For a horizontal canvas, I use 5100px wide by 3300px tall with 600 ppi - hope that helps!
