I love how you just toss out, "Bernadette's puffy pirate shirt" without any visual reference whatsoever and trust that your audience is going to know exactly what you mean!

@@melanierippon7884 I was wondering if you can actually google it and turns out you can. If you put in "Bernadette's Puffy Pirate Shirt" it literally brings up the youtube video as the first link. However, if you image search it then you won't get an actual picture of it for a two full rows of other pirate shirts (and other BB images, too). Interesting.

Have you ever considered making paper dolls? These designs remind me of a giant book of paper dolls and clothing I had as a kid and your designs (and specifically the way you design) would work so well for that! Absolutely love this capsule set. Very inspirational!

I think it's cute how much 'medieval fantasy' takes from other time periods (or how much they take from a real or imagined past). The 'pirate shirt' combined with the pointed yoke skirt suddenly reads edwardian! It's very charming :)

I love this type of video. It’s also making me think more about my own wardrobe- which is (planned to be) a mix of different eras, from the 13th century through to the 19teens. But with the colours and textures similar throughout to allow me to mix and match through eras, as well as still be able to have a full outfit from one particular era. I’m also trying to make at least one piece per era that elevates it from a more history bounding/wearable outfit, to a full on costume. But I don’t want to make just costumes, as I want to be able to wear what I make. My colours are natural and plain whites, beiges, browns and greys with pops of blue and blue-green. But what I haven’t done is sit down and design it all in a bunch, to be able to see the plan, as opposed to just a written list. This is making me think that it might be a good idea to do that.

Wow! That’s quite an endeavour!! So many different silhouettes and styles… I’d love to see how you manage it! 🤗💖 I’m struggling just to capsule wardrobe 1660s-1790s and 1870s-1900! All of which at least share a corseted torso and a full or flared skirt! 😂 The sleeves, the necklines, the bustle or lack thereof, and whether there is horizontal emphasis or vertical emphasis overall, are elements to consider in mixing and matching pieces from different eras. I’m stuck, so if you manage it, please share!!! 🥰😇🙏

I'd say the exception to using prints as a lining is when its repurposing something old that's too worn to use where it will be visible, or you're using up scraps. I remember a photo of an 18th century bodice that had 3 or 4 distinctly different print fabrics as the lining, someone clearly went through their scraps basket and found whatever would fit.

Mariah, I love your capsule wardrobes so much. Watching you build this wardrobe for your patron made me not only want to become a patron at some point to see more work like this but also to try and think better about my characters' clothing when writing (which I haven't done in a long, long time... Touché). I want to, but I'll have to wait until my finances recover. They've suffered a lot these past few months. *bemoans in South American language* WHY DO I ONLY GET COTTON TO WORK WITH THEN I LONG FOR LINEN. Linen is ridiculously expensive here. Like, almost as expensive as silk. You can find blends of polyester with wool that are cheaper and I've even found 100% wool that is closer in price to 100% cotton fabrics, but linen is ridiculously expensive. Not to mention how hard it is to find a thread that is anything but polyester. Not to mention there're like, 2 types of linen fabrics here. And maybe 3 of cotton fabric. The rest is always a blend of poly or 100% polyester. Maybe I love Bernadette's arguments way too much to give up on sewing mostly with natural fibers, but damn... Sometimes I wish I lived somewhere else so I could buy with some other currency. BRL is the bane of my existence when it comes to conversion rates. Makes it impossible to even consider saving up enough to buy fabric from abroad.

@anonymousperson4214

Another (only somewhat plausible) explanation for the fancy lining might be that it is scraps that were put in only in the visible bits OR that it is some that got a bit damaged (water damage perhaps?) Though depending on the laundry practices, perhaps showing a fancy lining while the garment is airing in a somewhat visible location is seen as the height of conspicuous consumption. Idk, but it's fun to think about! (And now I want to wear big flowy pants with medieval-ish clothes)
@ragnkja

It’s historically accurate to line the lower part of flared sleeves in silk, but use linen for linings that wouldn’t be seen.

Happily overthinking anyone else's world but mine is where I have been for the past five years, now! 🤣 I'm so glad you're doing this. I've farmed out my historical and linguistic background to fellow writers, before. There's something deeply comforting about helping to manifest another person's vision, with their direct guidance. And it's true how it gives you a breadth and variety that doesn't happen when you're working for yourself, which seems to be largely a process of curation and of distilling down.

It's so cool to see your work process with digitizing the capsule Wadrobe. Seeing how you use the features in illustrator to best create the designs is so cool! I always understood that illustrator can be good for consent lines and symmetry. But I never thought of how it can be used with its layering system to easily try out different looks when illustrating clothing on a figure. Wonderful video!

You just might need to clip one of that hen's wings. I have a troublemaker like her. Lol Like trimming nails, clipping won't hurt her, but would most likely keep her off the fence and in safe bounds. I love these capsule wardrobe things. As a youth, we had an activity where we went "shopping" with an imaginary budget and had to create as many different outfits as possible. Literally nobody else thought of mixing and matching, so I won that challenge by a landslide. Haha
@habituscraeftig

Yeah. I'm still working on that superpower. Growing up autistic, I didn't pay much attention to how I looked, so the easiest way to look 'put together' was to mostly wear one-piece garments. 😀 Now, being super into clothing, I'm instead dealing with wanting three very distinct silhouettes that don't have very much in common, even in the underlayers. Such is life.

Waaay off topic...and unasked for advice to do with what you will: After having chickens free roaming in a fence for many years, one of the ways to keep them in is to 1) build your fence bigger, which can be cost prohibitive, or 2) clipping the chickens wings. To do this, you don't ever cut flesh, only the feather below, making sure that you leave and inch or so below the wing flesh just to insure that the chicken is never harmed. Depending on the chicken, that can be 3 or 4 inches of feather. The idea is that they can never get enough lift to get them high enough to clear the fence. Most of the time this works well, but as feathers grow back, you will have to maintain it every couple of months or so. I have always just used a pair of sharp scissors for this--NOT my sewing scissors. :D
