Wild Montana staff and volunteers have hosted Wilderness Walks in the Pryor Mountains for decades. Many members enjoy this area because of its uniqueness compared to other mountain ranges in the state. The Pryor Mountains are a diverse ecosystem where you can go from the red desert to subalpine meadows in a few steep miles. The area is also rich in human history. Indigenous peoples lived here for thousands of years before white settlers arrived, and it is part of the traditional homelands of the Apsáalooke (Crow) people. Visitors may find petroglyphs, pictographs, and tipi rings.
Until recently, maps of the Pryor Mountains were largely out-of-date and incomplete. The most widely used map of the Pryors was a U.S. Forest Service motorized road map, which makes it particularly challenging to find opportunities for non-motorized recreation. Furthermore, none of the old maps presented users with important and interesting facts about the Pryors’ rich cultural history and unique ecology. Finally, no existing maps reflected the BLM’s current travel plan or the recommended Wilderness in the new Custer Gallatin National Forest plan.
Now, the first comprehensive quiet recreation map of the entire Pryor Mountains region is available for purchase thanks to the generous funding from the Billings Community Foundation, the leadership of Wild Montana’s Eastern Wildlands Chapter, and the skills of Missoula-based Cairn Cartographics.
