Zoe explores simple living in Grenada, West Indies... months after leaving London.
Given the turmoil the world seems to be in these days, sustainable living is very appealing, but where do you begin on tropical permaculture design in the Caribbean?
In this episode, Zoe shares her motivations and ventures into the garden/jungle at a historic property in Madeys, St Patrick with her cousin Compo to explore future plans for the riverside space that range from a homegrown garden, that incorporates elements of permaculture design.

Hi Zoe, its good when you have someone who can part so much knowledge about the land. So much things hiding in the bush. Also its so quiet in the countryside. Everyday will feel like a Sunday. It will take time, what ever you decide to do, but it will be worth it in the end. Great potential.

Thanks Andrew, yes connecting with Compo has been a godsend. And you're right, it's definitely going to take a while but hopefully it'll teach me how to be patient 🤞🏾

Zoe - I look up to women like you, people like you, who have the courage to return back to their roots away from the “rat race” to embrace a slower living style & reconnect with your soul. This is really beautiful & inspiring!

As for the history ofl sugar cane, I think it's important to note that it's not just America, but European countries, were also part of the brutal trade, this is why the Caribbean islands were and some still are territories of places like France and Britain. Back to your land, it seems like a lovely tranquil area. I am glad that your grandparents place is going to be put into use. I wish you all the best in getting your venture going
@ExodusCollective
@ExodusCollective 2 года назад
For sure! The West Indies was colonised by Europe. Sadly no books about sugar production in the Caribbean came to mind so I referenced one set in the US. Yes, my family is definitely blessed with access to this land but there's a significant responsibility that comes with it too imo. Glad to be starting this adventure!

@@ExodusCollective Arawaks to Africans (Heinemann Publishers) is an interesting read if you're into the history of the islands. Might be tough to find now though... I hated history in school (too many dates to remember!) 😀 but that was one of my favourites. Possibly now being published under the name Amerindians to Africans.

This was so calming for my soul to see the house and the beautiful land around it. The river was my solace and tranquility. So much can be done with land and house I love your vision. Great to have someone who knows about all the vegetations that’s there. And yes it is The Cottage and use to be an overseers house. I remember the older folk calling it the cottage. Will be intrigued to know the history.

Hi Zoe, I just found your channel, and I am excited to see more. My husband and I are sailing from New Orleans to Grenada starting in November 2022. My education is in sustainable agriculture, native plants, and ecology. I am hoping to get involved in these areas once I am there, and I have been reaching out to some folks with gardens and farms there. One term you might use in your searches as you learn more about permaculture and decide how you want to use the land is “agroforestry,” which involves using tree crops in diverse planting systems. It often integrates complementary vines as well. It is a term used around the world, and I think it would help you achieve that wild feel you are looking for while in keeping the food forest. I’d love to chat more. Best of luck, and I look forward to seeing what’s growing going forward. 🌴🌺🥑

First I’d like to say how soothing and interesting this video was. Thank you for sharing. I don’t think you should remove the cocoa trees. You have nutmeg as well so that’s an extra form of income if you decide to sell to the cocoa & nutmeg stations. I’m seeing bananas and plantains, almond.. you can practically live off the land if you plant in rotation. You have a number of structures that can be restored like the well plus direct access to the river (free water source). There is potential for a lot to be done whether you decide to live there or rent it.
@ExodusCollective

Yes, living off the land is definitely the dream! Imported food in Grenada is way too expensive and as a semi-vegetarian it's be wonderful to grow my own crops.

@@ExodusCollective a homestead is one of my main goals and actually first on my list of lifetime achievements so I can’t imagine how it feels to actually be living on your own terms. Things are wayyy too expensive (everywhere in the world) right now and the economy is never stable these days. The only thing that is stable is agriculture because we must eat no matter what. This is something I also intend on teaching my children. You have a river connected to the land which is even more of a plus. I love it lol excuse me if I seem more excited about it than you are. You can even get a couple sheep and a fowl run or rabbit coop & use the manure as fertilizer for your short crops like peas, peppers, corn, fruit trees. Keep the videos coming. My plan is to start RU-vid this year & continue the journey into the homestead so I’m super amped about seeing someone with a similar vision as mine. LOVE IT🔥😍

Beautiful place; Permaculture in the Caribean is the better resilance way to survive in the future. You can build a Permaculture School that teach our ancesters life style and You Can grow all the food that you need with that river by side. There is many people in this new wave of Permaculture interesting in Learn , In South America you can ask Jairo Restrepo and watch your permaculture videos . There is another interesting tecnique ; The JADAM Organic Farming from Korea
