It's just sad that digital papers have taken over junk journaling, most crafters seem to use them now, and it's hard on people who don't use them when you're trying to follow something, sorry if this sounds critical but I think it's something a lot of people might feel, I don't know, let me know what you think
@joiedefi
@joiedefi Год назад
I totally understand your sentiments, and can I say thanks very much for raising this point. It's a valid one and you said it in a kind way, I appreciate that...I use a lot of non-digital supplies too, that's my way. I find it exciting to "solve" how to create something without a pre-created picture. Sometimes the papers are also just what I want, for an image or the colour. But I don't create digitals myself and so I'm not focused so much on using them. I also want my viewers to be able to "access" this hobby and all the joy of it. So I guess I use them occasionally. Each to their own, but as I say I hear you. Does this make sense ??😁💜

Joie de Fi - Yes, what you say absolutely makes sense and you put it so well. I don’t use digitals. I work in an office and use a computer and printer all day, so it’s the very last thing I want to do when I get home. 😱🤷🏼‍♀️🤪 I like buying paper pads and using those. I don’t always get ‘exactly’ what I had in mind, but what I do get that is different I find inspiring, if you see what I mean? 😄 Thank you for all you share. 😊🙏💝💕💐 Also sending hugs to Eileen. ❤️💐

This is a great point, especially your point about time in front of a computer screen. I'd also say that I simply love the feel of book pages and using those and junk mail in projects...so if I can work those in I do. It's just a personal thing. Thanks so much for joining in with this debate, and for sending more hugs to Eileen!! 👍❤️🌿

I would consider what types of things you typically look for when you're searching through your printables--what you call them in your mind: botanicals, vintage, small ephemera, tags, backgrounds, etc. Putting the papers in those clear folders sounds like a great idea so you can pull them up to your desk easily when you want to look for something.

Thank you!!! I only started doing printables a few months ago. I was reading your comment and looking at her Vectoria Designs floral tags. My mind was shouting "tag". You gave me an idea for organizing my printables, and my pile is MUCH smaller. I'm also working on organizing the pieces I have cut already.

I bought myself a large plastic tub with wheels on it for easier manoeuvring. I placed the papers vertically inside and when I look for something, it’s so easy because all I have to do is flick through the papers without having to remove them from the box. This works well for me but everyone is different and you need to find something that suits you. Love your channel.

I think Loz has a really good idea with a plastic bin on wheels with a lid. Label each category alphabetically and have an Index page for quick reference. Thanks Joie for yr great ideas and also sharing yr frustrations which puts us all in the same predicament "sorting that makes sense" greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰 😀

The answer, for me, was a scan and cut and a bunch of small tins/pretty boxes collected from thrifting and friends. Amazing how much less space (in our crafting area and in our heads) kits etc take when they’re cut up, and I can store them by category. (Labels, flowers, birds, tags, journaling cards, etc.) I’ve also decorated some small cd holder type binders with pretty collages so I can stand them up on top of a dresser I use for storage and they just look like art. I theme the collage (color and content) to indicate what goodies they each contain. Beats the pants off the piles, bins, and folders method I used to use. See also: Iris cases. I’ve stopped buying ANY new stuff until I’ve got the stuff I already have cut out and stored. Full sheets from kits have gone by designer into files, but- I no longer print *anything* until I’m ready to actually use it. I’ve still got an overwhelming amount of “stuff” left over from my -PRINT ALL THE THINGS- stage, but I’m whittling away at it. Wishing us all luck in taming the paper beast! (Especially those of us who need to SEE our stash to get motivated.)

I use a plastic heavy duty divided holder with lots of dividers. I separate by theme, such as botanical, birds, nature related, and then make a separate plastic holder by holidays, and by other themes I make journals out of on a regular basis. It helps me to keep themes together so every item I need to make a journal out of is together. Works now but who knows down the road!

I got to many ideas from your video and from several of the comments. My takeaway is that I need to organize what I can and leave the rest to cut up/org later. I have a lot of stuff but some can definitely be put in categories. There are a lot of empty boxes in my garage that can hold papers in folders and inside the house. I have 2 arts/crafts rooms and have spread out to the kitchen right off my living room and computer/office room. The least I can do is clean and org and make things neater so I’m ready to collage or put a junk journal together. Thank you Joie and a the others who chimed in with their thoughts. It’s 9 months since this video was posted and I’m just now watching and learning and doing.

Hi Joie. I've watched this video before but found it the perfect motivation to finish my paper-sorting project. I bought plastic envelopes from our $Tree store here in the US. I'm sorting mostly by book pages, dyed papers (one each for all colors & coffee/ tea dyed), pattern scraps and digital scraps. You always have such great ideas. I hope you're on your way back to us. We miss you! Hugs & Creative Blessings!

@Shoshi Platypus That brown packaging paper! I love it! Multi-use-at Christmas, big time, for shipping presents; it often covers my desk under the craft mat, the edges sticking out are a good place to wipe a brush on or test an ink dauber or do a quick calculation. You’d think they were a prized possession, the way I carefully fold them up into neat flats. Yesterday I finished painting a bureau for my daughter, whose due date for the first grandchild is next week. Because my brown packing papers were so neatly stored, it was easy to take them over and spread them out on her picnic table and in the grass. When finished painting, I once again folded them up neatly and brought them home. They are ready for another project!

I read all the fabulous comments too. I don't keep a lot of paper. But I do store what I have in sturdy plastic envelopes. The envelopes will almost stand on their own. They also fit nicely in file boxes to see what I have. I also store stencils in them with dividers. Elizabeth St. Hillaire is a wonderful artist here on RU-vid. She has the best hook and line system for storing her stencils. I hijacked her idea and use the hooks to hang fabrics, stamps, brayers and anything I can mange. I go vertical whenever I can.

This is wonderful. I have a large number of used Manila folders that I did not want to just toss in the recycle bin. The folders are scored at the bottom so that they can be refolded to accommodate more papers. I refolded them at the most narrow score mark and then added accordion folded paper at the sides to ensure that nothing falls out. I have made envelopes from magazine pages to hold partial pages and small items. The paper at the sides keep them all contained, an contracts and expands as needed. Mine are divided by subject as well.

I can see your frustration . Creavitives often think of all the possibilities of all of their supplies very fast. I think you’ve gotten your craft room well on to it’s way to sensible. I personally forget what I have if its out of sight. My answer is to pile my papers and supplies on my treadmill so I’m not tempted to use it instead of crafting. Lol. Keep up the great work! If it’s not convenient you can make little changes as you go. Thanks for all of your wonderful videos. You’re a true inspiration.

We all struggle with this issue of getting organized. Just when I think I have a good system I find another way that I think will work better. The one thing that I have been most conscious of is to have most of my digitals organized by creator, so that when I use then I can always give credit to these creators for their hard work. Currently I have a couple of 3 tier carts - I love them - On the top tier I have the plastic wallets that hold what i use most and the creators that are my favorites, each wallet is labeled by creator and that theme as well

I love to categorize, I am a data analyst 😊 by profession. Over the years I learned to be OK with the possibility of change of my categories. I decide on a set of categories and just go with it. With time if I notice that one of the categories grows too fast, I divide it into a couple or more distinct ones. And those that never grew I simply combine with a name with a lot of hyphens in it. So I recommend to see no stress in all this, just start, then follow to the best of your abilities, then get used to, then observe your natural tendencies and adapt your system to them.

Hi Joie, thanks so much for doing this video...you clearly thought through the process. Traditionally, I've sorted mine by designer & kept them in a legal sized 4 drawer filing cabinet. Not the best system. iIthink I'll adopt your genre idea because let's face it, when you want a label, a gelli print won't do; when you want a floral, a background paper won't do. It would also accommodate outliers like gel prints, masterboards in various stages of completion, backed papers, etc. Getting excited now! Hazel

You would be surprised just how much will neatly fit in an 1.5" or 2" three ring binder. Those thin translucent binder folios with pockets that go into the binders are a way to separate the piles into however you want to sort them out. You can use zippy bags, to stick in the folio to hold smaller stuff or use sheet protector sleeves for partially cut out pieces. You really don't want to go much thicker than the 2" because it gets too bulky and hard to handle. Now is a good time to get them when back-to-school stuff is usually on sale. Adding dividers between the folios helps with keeping sections organized. That overwhelming pile of papers could easily and neatly be stored in 3 or 4 binders, and you can easily pull them out, easily find what you want, and easily tidy it up. IF you find one binder getting too full, you can either, say you have a tremendous amount of bird themed papers, just take them out go to another binder, all by themselves but go with one maybe a bit thinner, like 1". For example, you can have one binder for botanical/nature and have a section for butterflies, one for birds. one for wildflowers, etc. Then another binder, you can have for kits. One binder you could have for backgrounds, letters, collage papers, etc. You get the drift. Think of what you have and how you use them. Storing them vertically on a shelf or bookcase, or even on a far corner of your desk area they take up very little real estate. It is very flexible, cheap and easy to use. Hope that helps!

@impalamama7302 Год назад
@@brookematthews4431 There are many ways! Sheet protectors, those pocket folios students use have three rings or if not, get out your hole puncher. Or you can make them. I don't know where you are, but here in the US you can get all kinds of binder fodder at the Dollar Tree. But due to inflation it's now the Dollar and a quarter store. But last time I went there it was back before Easter. I wish I could put up pictures! I was known as the "Binder Queen" back in the days when I home educated my 4 (now grown) children. It even leaked over to the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scout Troops I was involved in with my three sons and one daughter. Looking back we really just junk journaled our curriculum lol! Hope that helps to clarify a wee bit! Cheers!

I have recently started my own channel and to help me keep track of whose digitals are whose. I use Manila file folders to coral individual kits and whose they are. Unless I haven’t got very many of someone’s kits then I paper clip the kit and put them all in one folder. It makes it quite easy to pull out a few folders and put them on my desk. All the fussy cuts I have pencil boxes with them in them and I store them on a shelf above my desk, easily within reach. My craft room is really quite small also. Love your videos!! Joie, this video really spoke to my heart. I've have my dining table covered with bins for sorting all the paper collections from my Studio. The "mess" can accumulate so quickly and soon be overwhelming. I love the way you decided on the clear vinyl wallets. I mostly use the 12 x 12 flat scrapbooking containers just because that's what I was using before junk journaling and I didn't want to invest in more containers. "Use what you have". These are great but are also cumbersome because you have to open and close, open and close, etc. I love having all my papers where I can readily see where I need to go. I know some people don't like digitals and prefer scrapbook paper but I found that I didn't use nearly enough of a pack and ended up with a lot of scrap that was taking up space and was a waste of my money. With digitals, they are saved on my computer and I can print only what I want and don't take up near as much space in my craft room. I really enjoyed your video and always get great ideas from you. Thank you for this perspective on onganizing papers. I have OCD which makes me super organized but also makes it difficult for other people to understand my system. 😁 I always print the entire kit which I store on a large plastic envelope or a gallon size zipper bag. These are stored alphabetically by creator. When I make a project from a kit I try to use all the pieces but if not, i have a separate filing system that is organized by type such a tags, journal cards, ephemera etc. For small things like labels, numbers, butterflies, I usually sit down in the evening to watch TV with my partner and fussy cut them. They are stored in magnetic tins that are stored in cookie sheets and hang on the wall. I know my system won't work for everyone but its helps keep me calm and if know where everything is.

Hello Joie.... this is a great and useful video. I have a much bigger mess than you have. I am pretty good at figuring out how to sort & file my papers.... it is the damn maintaining that throws me for a loop. I tend to sort papers by how I plan to use them. One big category for me is papers printed to use as pages in journals. Then I have papers printed to create ephemera with. I also have patterned papers which are great for ripping up for collage.... then there are papers which need fussy cutting plus labels. Then there are gelli printed papers, embossed papers, paper napkins, and translucent papers, painted (with watercolor) papers, stamped papers....... and you can't forget dyed papers ie coffee. Marbled and florentine papers. I am sure I have missed a few. I LOVE PAPER!! ....Great Video!!!

I am the queen of fussy cutting, keeps me busy while watcvhing TV. Those are seperated by category & size. I don't do the printables, my printer doesn't make nice ones and I really like the texture of other papers. That said I have TONS of paper, thanks to local thrift stores. I bought shelving from scrapbook stores as they all went out of business. I sort the whole pages by color. Seperate files for exotic papers, lined papers. I moved a year ago and the studio is still not ready for prime time and I've spread to the dining room table. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and am down to sorting scraps by size (tiny as postage stamps, size to put on small envelopes/pockets, long skinny pieces for trim or tags, full-page ephemera)

Hello from Texas, USA! I just went thru this exercise with my own mess of papers! I have tons of little embellishments that I divided into categories and put in file pockets. I don’t print whole pages of digitalis until I’m going to use them but I realize that if I printed a few of my favorites, i could be more creative and just pull out what looks pretty at the time. I like your idea of using a cereal box to make a place for digital pages and will be making one today. ♥️♥️

I think if you don't have money to spend on digitals etc is a good thing...It makes you more creative! I bought a book of cloak room tickets for a £1 and I distress them to use in products (you can coffee/tea stain them). You could also start a glue book and glue any bits you collect adding doodles and colouring (making you own papers). Any mail that comes with a stamp/cancellation marks on it, glue it in your glue book. I also bought a modern invoice book which I also distress.

I am so focused on creating and NOT remembering where I put things 😝that a must do for my organizing process is immediately labeling piles and files and fussy cut collections. I have a label maker AND I put a handwritten cover sheet with what’s in a certain pile or folder immediately with my stash of papers, whatever it may be. 🧡🧡🧡

Brilliant as always ❤️ I love my under the desk paper storage idea that I took away from your last organisation video, it works really well for most of my papers but I haven't categorised the digitals like you just did. Thinking that might be a good idea for me also. My system has been to sort digital papers regularly so that I find gems that I had forgotten I had then my next projects tend to heavily favour those papers and that leads to new ideas. I also go through the files on my computer, which are sorted fairly well when looking for new inspiration. My digital files are massive because I lean heavily towards Public Domain images that really seem to get me inspired, kind of like your passion for books 😉 🥰

I like using the plastic folders because they are not bulky and can be easily accessible in a bin or box! I tend to be organized and create various methods but I have difficulty keeping things put away and back where they belong! I re entry ordered some shelving to help me create space for stuff I don’t use regularly so that the things I want to have access to has a more accessible location !
