As a guitarist with NO keyboard skills I have struggled for the longest time trying to use Scaler itself and driving other VIs to create compositions. I usually end up just getting basic chord structures going and then running into "A Wall". This video Davide, has opened my brain up to all the other possibilities/uses of Scaler and the power of the wonderful tool that it is. THANK YOU so very much. Can't wait for Version 3! :)
My initial use of Scaler has been only to use it as a source of chords or chord progressions I can work with in a DAW, but thanks to this video, I now see there is great potential for using Scaler as a complete medium in which to create finished compositions and recordings from scratch. Thank you!
Scaler 2 is THE premier tool for help with music theory and creating interesting chord progressions but one thing it lacks is to help users understand the "why". I may be in the minority but I believe it Scaler 2 modulates over to helping users understand the "why", this would go from a great creation tool to the leading educational and creation tool. For example, there will be users whom don't know the difference between modal harmony and functional harmony and that the chord progression used is functional as opposed to modal. I Sus4 / I Sus2 / I / I Sus4 / I Sus2 / vi7 over C / IV over C Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Tonic / Sub Dom The music sounds nice because it remains mostly in the Tonic which a "home" of a functional progression with the only tension being offered by the IV over C which has a Sub Dominant function. As you listen to the music, you'll hear that it is calm, centred and generally positive because we are in that safe space of the Tonic. This is not to say that the chord progression is wrong because it's not, I just want to highlight and connect some dots for users out there and make them a little aware of the "why" the progression works from a progression point of view. This does not include the added positives bought about by excellent arrangements because you can have an amazing harmonic chord progression but if you don't have the melodic content to back it up by a strong arrangement then the chord progression, no matter how interesting, would be boring and the end result would also be boring. Davide Carbone does a wonderful job, time and again, to showcase the power of Scaler 2 and I would always recommend this to be part of your toolset to generate ideas but I would invite people to use it to learn more about music theory and for those that developed Scaler 2 to examine the possibility of expanding the usability of this wonderful program to include an educational approach as well.
Very fun tutorial. I love watching people make tracks. I usually get one idea down and then wonder what I can do with it next. This video has given me some inspiration with regards to automation to create movement between a first a second section. Thank you.
We agree and love Davide too, We are fortunate enough to have him take in person classes in his popular Production Masterclass here at the School of Synthesis in Melbourne.
Thank you so much for this tutorial Davide. I have used SCALER2 for chords progression but always knew that it is much more capable given time to learn its capabilities and this video proves it. The music you created is just fantastic. All the best.
Scaler 2 is a revolutionary plugin, I studied music theory and did piano in the past, but Scaler helps in the writing process where I can explore things I didn't knew that could work in my music, it helps with writers block, this is a fabulous plugin, I really love the way you can explore with it and come up with unique chord progressions, hoping to see what they'll add to this amazing plugin in the future, thanks Davide 👍🏻
I have seen a lot of tries to do instructional videos for making music and I can say without doubt this is one of the best I seen on RU-vid, because Davide didn't assume people know music theory concepts, but tried to explain why he is doing it and how do you put it together. Thank you for the effort!
The best instruction film I have seen on RU-vid. Great presentation, great melody and very much Inspiring. After making music for a while this will be the breakthrough for my succes. Thank you so much!
I cannot believe what I just watched! I've desired this software for years now and finally purchased it last year and am just now starting to learn how to use it. That composition was unreal! I also had no idea Scaler had such luscious tones. Utterly amazed. So inspiring, emotionally captivating, and spiritually enthralling! I'm speechless and very grateful. Thank you PIB and @davidecarbone for this video. It is an instructional masterpiece, demonstration of musical theoretical ingenuity, and music production. Absolutely amazing! Blessings. 🙏.
Thanks for feedback and we love Scaler and also love the music Davide created in this video. Don't forget to check out the official Scaler 2 course too if you want to fully utilise the power, not trying to sell it but 4k people have done it and got lots out of it! Blessing to you too and thanks for the kind words.
Scaler is awesome, I love using the phrases and different patterns by using the record midi option then dragging the midi to my tracks, instant patterns that I can't really come up with or play, I'm still a beginner piano player. Am guitarist and drummer first. Thanks for this new video!
@@davidecarbonemusic thank you! Scaler came in my life a week after i had wished there was a tool that would help me create backing tracks for my guitar. Magic. Thanks to it i have recorded a lot more music. And enjoy doing electro music as well. It's an amazing tool. And your tutorials not only explain the tool but show how uncomplicated of a process music can be. Very grateful.
This is what sets plugins apart when there is so much effort made in tutorials and how to use it, I have bought it not used it yet, I will go through these amazing tutorials so I can get the best of out it. Purest made say you should learn the chords, but for me its nothing to do with that. Using tools like this removes muscle memory as we always subconsciously have our favourite progression. It allows you to experiment and get inspiration and come up with harmonies and progressions you would never come up with any other way!
I’ve yet to delve into scaler. I know I will find inspiration, yet I still leave it unattended. I will refer back to this channel when time permits. Have a good day/night 👍🏼
Definitely added a couple workflow tips from this video with my use with iPad version. Not much more to ask for within this plugin to say the least! And a great compressor plugin you pulled up.
Invaluable tutorial for me - helping me to understand some of Scaler's bewildering layout. Now I've seen it used in action like this I can join the dots and it all seems quite intuitive and natural. Thanks for sharing !
Scaler 2 is a plugin of the 21st century, If you're stuck on the same chord progressions, Scaler 2 is your faithful friend. Bought this recently for $59, cheers.
Do not regret buying scaler at all, its been a huge help and you tend to pickup things as you go in terms of theory, it's sort of learning out of play instead of making it boring. Would really appreciate more videos/song making in the style of funk or jazz, like Jacob Collier style or Louis Cole to really put Scaler to the test, or even you making a pop song with a few chord variations or something. I personally struggle with going from a normal triad to a different chord maybe with more tonality to it, so seeing more variations or even just more videos similar to this would help a bunch for perspective. Just some suggestions. Thanks so much
Please do a video just on Melody. I've seen 3 techniques buried inside of your other videos. It's very confusing but also, I know the possibilities are greater than what has been demonstrated. A course on melody is needed and would be much appreciated.
Ok, this is truly inspirational, but David…. You are a popular brand! The sweater, the white collar shirt, glasses and beard, plus your excellent quality voice and the flow of your videos. It is unique and effective. We musicians and creators have great respect for your music theory knowledge, creativity, skills with Logic X, and of course your deep knowledge and skill with Scaler. I would say you’re sitting on a $1 million brand - and the brand is you! When you think of Rick Beato, Andrew Huang or Mary Spender, they’ve leveraged their brand to attract 2 - 3 million subscribers. Perhaps the barrier to increasing your popularity is the fact it’s “Scaler Only” which is a limited audience, but should you expand your videos to cover complimentary products, you could double or triple your wealth. You’ve created your brand… now where do you take it next?
Um thanks, I think there's a compliment in there somewhere 😇 I do have a few brands and much as I enjoy making Scaler vids I am not sure I could make vids in things that don't interest me or that I am asked to make vids on - which happens a bit. Anyways, hope to make lots more for SOS!
Great Video again Davide, but is there a way to "EXPORT" the MIDI in BULK from all Scalers? I purchased the new Scaler 2 Class, but I didn't see an option for "BULK" Export....
can you please make more videos using scaler 2 and guitar? I recently brought some guitar vsts and would love to use them with scaler but it seems difficult to compose guitar chords using guitar for genres like r&b or pop.
Going back through the videos because I more or less gave up on scaler after buying: the arpeggios always seem slightly off sync with my DAW and the transitions between chords are always messy. I'm sure it's just that I'm missing something so I'm going 'back to school' to see what it is. I'd love to love this as much as others. Right now, it's only helping me make sense of unfamiliar chords (which to be fair is a lot) but there's some much more to it than that, I realise
Indeed Pat, although the arps and sequences should lock perfectly and chord transitions should be perfect. Not sure what you are doing or what is happening - don't forget lots of helpful users over at forum.scalerplugin.com and lots of other videos on this channel for you to work through.
We like starting with Reggae, NeoSoul, Contemporary RnB, and Latin Jazz. From there it's a case of mixing and matching and using the suggest mode to flush out something original. Hope that helps. Don't forget to share tips and suggestions over at forum.scalerplugin.com
at 12:04 marc. you duplicated the piano. and then then duplicated it again and then an import state. whats the difference? i mean why do the import state there if it copies the midi the same way?
You composed the whole track by binding the chords and drawing in the piano roll. After the whole musical idea is final, should we use those scalers as inputs of favourite instruments or should we capture the midis and drop there? If we capture the midis and remove all the scaler instances is there any disadvantages? On the whole, what is the best way to finalize?
HI Arafat, I guess it doesn't really matter. When I am making a track I just want to get it done so often it ends where it ends. Now this isn't always good practice if you need to come back to it after a few years where ideally you've done some housekeeping. But I just find the great artists (not implying I am one of them!) often just get it done whilst the majority of producers fuss too much in the detail. I always tell producers to just make track after track after track. Most of them won't be great but occasionally one will live forever. The more time making tracks the less time in the detail...Hope the answer is helpful!
Hello David, I already placed a comment to this amazing plugin and presentation. Please stay at RU-vid! One question: may I use the beautiful melody of your example in this video for my own musical project?
@@davidecarbonemusic Right! I prefer to innovate :) and just one more thing. This plugin is by far the best plugin ever made. Without a question. Thank you very much for making it!
Arp is so over used. It is a great pity that has happened because sometimes it really fits but everybody seems to over use it since integration into beat music and all. It is a great pity everybody leans on it so much. Great tute example though, scaler has so much potential. makes me want to start a channel called "The Anti-Arp".
Different screen real estate and totally different UX. Not that dumb really. Devs have done a decent job and we move between both platforms on a daily basis.
This felt piano just sound boring... if you want to increase sales of scaler you may include better sounds (the other sound cheesy to) and then please integrate 3rd party synth support so ALL functions of scaler are playable through another synth.😊 Thanks😊
One person's trash is another person's treasure. We and thousands of other artists love the felt piano in Scaler 2 - it's a felt piano! There are some big changes coming too which you may like.
@@SchoolofSynthesis to me it does just not sound right... and doesn't do justice to many chord progressions that could shine much more. Also scaler is missing something really important. . I bought it and like it.. no question but really surprise how this one is still missing. I still have to do most work out of the plugin! So for me yeah.. i'll go with it...but looking for other solutions. 🤗.
Or... you can actually learn music theory and internalize the rules that SCALER seems to woodenly emulate. Just think: you can compose Music, rather than generate a pseudo-music.
Give it a try sometime David, Scaler is used by many of the top producers and composers in their field. On its own it does nothing for you, but with a bit of musical nous it opens up many doors. Has done for thousands of peeps around the world. Stay happy
