Wow, that's such a pro-level effect. Does HitFilm provide an occlusion mask so you can, say, keep some of the lens flare or lightning from shining _through_ your actors head? Or, say, they were fighting a few feet apart and the lightning arc passed behind a foreground column. Could you mask the effect to keep it behind the column?
Yeah you can mask out the lightning. Though you'd want to comp it so the glow wasn't affected otherwise the cutoff would look weird. You'd also want your lens flare to show over it, since that's something that happens in the lens. If you wanted it 'blocked', then you'd be better just fading out that layer.

So I don’t have to copy paste a grade into each comp to maintain e.g. a LUT look, or wouldn’t need to convert bits into comps I’d normally think look ok and there is no need for a comp? Like, use a LUT on an “Editor Grade track” that effects all underlying tracks? Think about it of a meta grade. Cheers, Ray
You can add grade layers to composite shots, just not to the main timeline. If you don't need to use transitions, you might be better off just doing your 'final' edit within a big comp shot so that you can use a grade layer that way.
Didn't even see the skeleton in the trailer on my first watch thought it was a missed opportunity so I rewatched the trailer several times on a couple of different devices to be sure and this is just one of those effects walking the fine line between subconscious-subtlety and needing to be aggressively inyourface(5:01). To telegraph itself to the viewer for big screens obviously you want subtlety, but probably not for yt after grading,flares,framerate,bitrate?, youtube compression, viewing RotDS on low end devices the emphasis of the effect gets lost. Sweet in 2k+ though for frame snobs.
the 3d model... visible, would have made the scene much cooler. i mean, it was right there :)) why not leave it on or integrate it in some masking techniques?
Hey there, I love your tutorials and think hitfilm express is such an awesome program! I have a problem, I seem to make some kind of mistake when being done with my composit shots, in this one the Lightnings just disappeared after adding the other effects, on the second try it worked. Do you know what I could be doing wrong?
@Cj Kalandek Up until now NO external plugins work with Express. It's kind of the reason why people need to buy Pro, because there are lots of OFX plugins out there that would be great to use with Express if it did, then who would need Pro? So either Oli forgot that, or there is a major change coming with V14. I doubt they'd undercut themselves like that though, so assume it doesn't work?
