In this video I show how I create my toolpaths for surfacing my spoil board and creating the grid. I use Aspire from ‪@vectric‬ but the steps in this video can be done in Cut2D and V-carve Pro.
This is the first of many videos to come where I show how powerful and useful the software from Vectric can be. It is by far the best design software for all CNC woodworking.

I have heard often that climb cut is not great, bit is trying to climb out of the cut which causes chatter as it is cutting from the outside of cut edge inward toward where you are cutting, conventional scoops from cut toward outside and provides constant pressure against spindle

That is partially true. The first thing I am going to say is if you are getting chatter on a climb cut you are trying to cut too fast for the bit and material. The descriptions of how each work is accurate. However, conventional cuts tend to tear out more often. If I could draw a diagram here it would be easier to explain. Climb cuts sever the grain whereas conventional pulls and cuts them. It is similar to using a hand router where depending on your wood you need to do a climb cut ( carefully mind you) to get a smooth cut. Conventional cuts are great for roughing passes but you will want to switch to climb cuts for finishing and fine details.

Just finished the Grid and Surface and have it saved. Took me several tries because I was trying to watch the video and then switch to V-carve back and forth on my laptop. Tonight I used another computer to watch the video and my laptop to work on. Much easier. Question (I'm new at this) when I go to run the surface do I need to set the center of my board as the XY? Or does the program just use the size entered and the toolpath and go to town? I know I have to set Z.

You will need to set the X and Y to the same spot that you set in V-Carve for the XY Datum.

Thank you. I was wondering if there would be any advantage in using a pocket cut in raster mode (no layout needed)?

I’m not sure what you mean by no layout needed. You will still have to layout for the raster. Also, the reason you want to use offset instead of raster is because: 1- with raster you are only flattening along one axis or the other ( depending on your raster angle) . I know it seems like it would be flattening in both but it won’t. It’s kinda difficult to explain in text but essentially it will only move across one axis or the other except on the end of the line. 2- if you run it in raster across X (for example) and you need to tram your router/spindle in Y it won’t show you that and vice versa. You could run it across X then run again along Y but that creates multiple steps and adds to the total time. So we run it in offset and that gets us where we need to be without the extra steps.

I followed your instruction step by step but when I go to join the two it will not let me join them... Not sure what I'm missing ?? I'm also using V-carve pro
