Ranked among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, this is the definitive review of the classic music of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). Featuring an in-depth retrospective with bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug ‘Cosmo’ Clifford who revisit every Clearwater album to reassess the music and its impact. Band members; John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, Doug Clifford
Director: The Creative Picture Company
Stars: Chris Welch, Reuben Archer, Phil Sutcliffe
The American rock band was formed in El Cerrito, California. The band initially consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty; his brother, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty; bassist Stu Cook; and drummer Doug Clifford. These members had played together since 1959, first as the Blue Velvets and later as the Golliwogs, before settling on the Creedence Clearwater Revival name in 1967. The band performed at the 1969 Woodstock festival in Upstate New York, and was the first major act signed to appear there.
CCR disbanded acrimoniously in late 1972 after four years of chart-topping success. Tom Fogerty had officially left the previous year, and John was at odds with the remaining members over matters of business and artistic control, all of which resulted in subsequent lawsuits among the former bandmates. Fogerty's ongoing disagreements with Fantasy Records owner Saul Zaentz created further protracted court battles, and John Fogerty refused to perform with the two other surviving members at Creedence's 1993 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though the band has never officially reunited, John Fogerty continues to perform CCR songs as part of his solo act, while Cook and Clifford have performed as Creedence Clearwater Revisited since the 1990s.
CCR's music is still a staple of U.S. classic rock radio airplay; 30 million CCR records have been sold in the U.S. alone. The compilation album Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits, originally released in 1976, is still on the Billboard 200 album chart and reached the 500-week mark in December 2020. It has been awarded 10× platinum.

CCR; Prom, 1969!! Yes!! I think, Fortunate Son, definitely showcased the peak of John's voice. It May be a statement on the political angst of the time, but to me there's a sexy character to the gritty, passionate way in which he sang that song. The band just shines in that one.

thumbs up for your logo ID. I'm a Cosmo's fan. it's really too bad that it sounds like they didn't have a vote on whether or not the Woodstock set got out. that, I would say, should be a group decision. It is my opinion that a MAJOR factor in CCR's problems was their business manager, Saul Zaentz. From what one reads on Wickedpedia (Wikipedia), Mr. Zaentz was responsible for business deals that bilked millions of dollars from the band. I will not mention Mr. Zaentz's specific ethnic / religious heritage, but I think THAT explains a lot of his behavior towards the band and its members. Thank you.

Where is John? Why was the fact that the 3 of them (not John) sold their rights to Saul (their manager) is what led to John leaving the band????? @michaelharrington75

The others sold their rights to Saul after the breakup of the band. They broke up because the others were wanting to write and sing, and because John had writers block due to the contract pressure he was under. Saul let the other 3 out of the contract, but wouldn't let John out, so he quit.

Stu Cook is lying. He, Doug Clifford, and Tom Fogerty definitely wanted to write, sing, and get more recognition. Tom Fogerty chose to just quit the band. That's when John said, "Okay.., you guys can have two thirds of the album." They wrote and sang 3 songs a piece, and the album was terrible with the exception of 'Someday Never Comes' and 'Sweet Hitchhiker'. Both written and sang by John. Stu and Doug sang terribly! Especially Stu! Saul Zanz let everyone out of their contracts except John Fogerty. John was the money maker of the bunch.

Well yes John was the only one who had the gift of being capable to write songs in this awesome way, but his brother Tom was a very, very good rhythm player, Stu could play the bass very groovy and spot on and Doug was just the right drummer for the band. I just heard their take on "Heard it through the grapevine," and I'm thinking, that's not John Bonham, or Keith Moon, but it's pretty good, decent...but you know what? In the end, even Keith Moon was REPLACED (by Kenny Jones, I believe), who was fine...So you three "session" guys, you were ALL replaceable. Know who was NOT replaceable? The lead singer ger.
