Classic ghost story. Unnerving scene. Nothing in today's CGI crap-fests can compare, not even close! Oh and the remake with Lili Taylor[great actress but the script fails her there] is INCREDIBLY AWFUL. Man that was a bad movie. I love that creepy face on the wall. Also, the book is very well written and superb.

I can’t believe I never realized this fact until now. In the scene prior to this, Eleanor went to sleep in the bed right next to Theo. However, when she wakes up to the voices, she’s on the other side of the room on that couch, suggesting something had separated her from Theo while she was sleeping. Neither her nor the audience realizes this until she turns the lights on. This explains her disorientation in addition to her terror afterwards and also why she still whispers to “Theo” during the supernatural activity as if she was still in the bed right next to her, telling “Theo” to hold her hand. Boy, that makes this scene even more disturbing than I originally thought.
@khfan4life365
@khfan4life365 2 года назад
What’s creepier is that Eleanor wasn’t alarmed by the touch of the ghost until she found out it was a ghost. That means this ghost’s hand was warm enough to be human. Most people who have felt ghosts often describe them as cold. This ghost must have had a lot of power to feel human.
@Asertix357
@Asertix357 Год назад
So what was the thing that slammed the door and produce the thunderous booms in the later season that left Theo feeling so cold?
@Sabiliwisely8315
@Sabiliwisely8315 3 месяца назад
@@Asertix357 different ghosts. The man speaking nonsense was Hugh Crain, the crying little girl and the one holding Eleanor's hand in this scene was Abigail Crain, the laughing woman who bangs in the walls and doors is the evil companion who hanged herself at the spiral staircase, mocking Abigail's death. The evil companion also causes Theo to feel cold because of what Theo said earlier about Eleanor being the companion, Dr. Markway as Hugh, and herself as Abigail aka comparing herself to Abigail, someone the companion hated the most. The reason why Abigail's hand was warm in this scene was because she didn't have any kind of bad intention towards Eleanor.

I saw it in a theatre in the 1990s. It's unbelievably frightening on the big screen because you get sucked in more deeply. What I love most about this film is how disquieting it is. It's not just scary. It's deeply creepy and disturbing. I personally can't recall another movie that has given me nightmares, or made me not want to be alone in the house at night. THIS movie did all that. And this scene in particular was hair-raising in the theatre, especially on a newer surround sound system! The voices felt like they were crawling in my ears! As a lover of old movies, I also enjoyed watching a modern audience SO terrified by a thirty-five year old black and white film. What a testament to its lasting power. They were literally screaming and jumping out of their seats at points. And you have to figure that probably at least a few of the people there were the sort who tend to pooh-pooh vintage films or even laugh at them. They weren't laughing that night.

Truly a moment of cinematic platinum and a masterful scene in the horror genre. Kudos to Robert Wise! Normally I am not frightened by horror films, but this is one of the very few scenes in a horror film that has legitimately given me the chills and made me feel extremely unsettled. It is just so brilliantly done, sounds very realistic, and the black-and-white cinematography and the fact you never see anything makes it all the more terrifying. And to think, this is by the same director who made "The Sound of Music." So the same director who made my ultimate favorite "cutsey" film also made the one horror film that genuinely terrified me with this scene alone.

emily7103 It's a shame the remake fell into the hands of someone as untalented as Jon de Bont. Let's take a movie like "The Haunting" which has all it's scares rely on subtleties, and give it to the guy who made a tornado growl (Twister). Surely, he's the master of fucking subtly. Why couldn't they have gotten someone like Brian DePalma or Wes Craven to handle the remake? At least someone who's directing quality could atleast be a nice send-up to Robert Wise? INstead they got that guy who directed Speed 2. Ugh, that guy should really just stick to cinematography.

@paulchristman2456

ChristianPaul75 A true gem from the heyday of Gothic horror. Ambiguity is so unnervingly frightening. I know that it's nothing short of horror film heresy to say this but, personally, I think "The Exorcist" is the most over-rated horror movie of all time. It amounts to nothing but sheer sensationalism, tossing ambiguity right out under the ashcan. In that respect, "The Exorcist" can in fact be considered juvenile and déclassé. Indeed, any film featuring a scene in which a young girl masturbates with a crucifix and vomits all over a priest's face would seem to be the product of a director and screenwriter who are utterly unable to distinguish between that which is genuinely frightening, and that which is simply sickening and grotesque.

I saw this in 1963 and it reminded me of the old story about a man walking down a country lane who take refuge in an old ruined cottage on a dark stormy night. All he has on him is a candle and a box of matches. He settles himself down and places the candle and matches by the side of him should he need them. At about 1.30 am he wakes and realises that he is not alone and a feeling of utter dread comes over him. He slowly reaches for the matches and something places the box in the palm of his hand. This film magnificently captures the same sort of supernatural fear which has been passed down through the ages since human beings sat round the fire on dark winter nights and told tales to frighten their audience.

I think I've heard this story before; wasn't it also retold in one of the, Scary Stories to tell in the Dark, series? I think the story ends with the man running out of the cottage in fear, he gets on his horse and never looks back. The creepy factor is the not knowing what's around when you're alone in the dark or thinking you're safe but in reality you're in worse danger. Its kind of like the story where the girl thinks her dog is licking her hand only to wake up to find her dog dead and a bloody note on the wall that says, humans can lick too.

Infinite Sky/ I agree wholeheartedly, this is a very powerful production. It creates a real sense of true evil, a terrible darkness, malevolence and malice. The evil is the house itself, it is alive, patiently waiting to enslave and assimilate its victims, very dark. Much more frightening than the blood and gore they churn out these days that's supposed to pass for horror.

That's exactly what I saw, at the UC Theatre in Berkeley CA back in the 1990s! This audience was scared sh*tless by both--the relentless horror of "The Haunting" and the slow, uneasy buildup of "The Innocents". This scene was extremely effective, as was the one where the thing bangs on the door of their bedroom. The jump scare in "The Innocents", where Deborah Kerr pulls back the curtain at the patio door and sees Quint looking in at her--that one, people started screaming. Modern horror films cannot compare with the deep fear these two masterpieces create.

I've always thought this was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Loved it as a kid, and still love it. I think it is so much better then the 1999 remake could ever be.

I agree with it being the scariest movie ever. The remake was the only movie in my life I've ever walked out on. I was disgusted, angry, and almost in tears on the way home from the theater.

This really was a SCARY movie, and they managed to do it without one graphic scene in the entire film! It was all done on a psychological level that left the audience feeling creeped out to the max. Anyone who can watch this film alone, at night, in an empty house, and claim they weren't scared even once, is either lying, or already dead! Yeah it's in black and white, yeah it was made in 1963, and yeah... It's vastly superior to most of the trash they call horror these days!

This is literally one of the scariest horror movie scenes of all time, and you never once see the monster or ghost. Such a brilliant way of tapping into that paranoia and fear of things that go bump in the dark. 😥
@cliffgreene1675
@cliffgreene1675 6 месяцев назад
The lighting is so incredible. At first, you see the face, but it's like "hmm it's just a pattern, do I really see anything?" Or "am I seeing what I'm supposed to be seeing" and then the way the light shifts and adjusts by the end of the scene it's made 100% clear. And it's somehow so terrifying how it messes with your head.

A genuinely creepy scene from a genuinely creepy movie! This film does it for me every time I see it. You can forget nearly all the other horror films, especially the dreadful 1999 remake. The 1963 Robert Wise production of The Haunting gives me goose bumps every time. It is SCARY!!!

I still cannot make my mind up if she is descending into madness or the house is truly haunted. Either way this is still the best film to send the chills and shivers right up & down the spine. A true classic in every sense.

The author of the novel it was based on wanted to walk a very fine line, and wanted it mostly to represent the psychological terrors of that character. She got very frustrated when people assumed it was strictly a ghost story.

Luka Meah “And we who walk here walk alone.” Could be a reference to madness as well. “We who walk here” as in those who are insane, “walk alone,” as in nobody else understands what is going on in their head. It’s deliberately ambiguous. Either interpretation is correct.

The first time I saw this was more than 50 years ago. I was about 9 and crazy even then for horror movies ( I think I cut teeth on the original "Dracula"🐲, starring Bela Lugosi ). Needless to say, it scared me no end 😱. I've seen it again several times since and don't mind confessing that, although I know this film beginning to end, I STILL can't watch it alone, in the dark... 😨So many brilliant scares, endless suspense, such a thrilling sense of foreboding throughout. And the caretakers, especially the Mrs. ("No one will come closer than that..."), YIKES!!! The performances were all wonderful! 👍👍👍👍👍I've always been a Julie Harris fan (she's gone now, of course) and this is one of her most powerful performances. Dear, sad, sweet Nell. Her loneliness has haunted me for years since... 😑 But I digress. This one was made during a time before CGI overwhelmed performances, becoming the true stars of any film, sad to say. The minimalism of such only contributes to the overall horror and suspense of this classic.👏👏👏👏 Today's generation 📹 of horror writers could truly learn from these masters of the genre 🎥🎬🎭. Definitely one of those NOT to watch alone, in the dark... 😐

In this scene ,(one of the scariest,in my opinion), the 'face' or the implied 'face', can be seen through the 'feathers' and design on the wall. I see the 2 eyes and the mouth, with the feathers partially blocking it. Like when you put your hand up to your mouth on either side,like hiding or when in shock. Absolutely creeps me out!! The 2009 and 20014 versions, just don't compare to the mastery of this one!! Even watching it during the day!! Brilliant and beleivable acting!! Gives me chills. Naples,FL.

An interesting side note to this movie is that back when Walt Disney was planning The Haunted Mansion he had his imagineers go watch horror movies to get ideas for the attraction. This movie gave them several ideas for the iconic ride. This scene with the face in the wall led to the idea of the iconic Haunted Mansion wallpaper that has the faces in it.
