So, I went to Crime Con. Let's talk about that experience, and let's also talk about the Rust panel, because I have some serious thoughts about that. They straight up threw blame at Hutchins for her death. I'm angry.
I’m disgusted by the people who suggested that the victim was responsible! Baldwin, Hannah and the production are responsible! I find it repulsive that anyone defends Hannah after her disgusting calls! wtf is wrong with everyone?!
What these people should do is stand up in front of her family especially her kids and her husband and tell them face to face that it was her fault. Bet they're not willing to do that.
There's an element of True Crime 'fans' who ALWAYS find a reason that a WOMAN is primarily at fault. If the victim is a woman, then she shouldn't have left the house, had that boyfriend, opened the door etc. If the victim is a child then it's always the mother's fault for having that boyfriend, letting them out the house, having a job, letting them go to school. If the victim is a man then it the mother's fault, the girlfriend for wanting a night out etc. It's really bad and that's why I stopped watching it.
It makes my heart happy that you were able to meet EDB. I have a feeling most of the lawtube people we follow (EDB, Rob, Runkle, Natalie, Peter) are exactly the same once the camera is off.
The whole idea of CrimeCon feels skeezy and somewhat exploitative to me, but maybe I just don't understand the purpose. I do, however, understand how meeting some of the people would be amazing!
I get that. And I kinda thought it as well. I mean I’m still a bit skeptical. But I also watched it raise money for searches for missing persons, educate folks about safety and society, and bring awareness to many causes. It’s definitely weird. When I first heard of it I definitely had a “seriously?” moment haha. I guess I was left wondering, who is it exploiting? And I don’t know the answer to that. Maybe victims of crime? But like, in the case of Gabby Petito, Crimecon helped her family speak out about intimate partner violence and raise money for their charitable foundation. That’s anecdotal obv. :) I’m curious what your take is on who you think is being exploited? If you are comfortable chatting.
All of those “cons” feel the same to me. Super inflated prices to meet “famous” people. I had a friend who used to go to a lot of those conventions and take pictures with formerly famous and currently famous people. It just felt weird to me because she would be so happy and proud she met these people.
@@daCubanaqt I think they have a target audience and that target likes what they offer :) it’s not for me, but I mean, to each their own in that sense I guess.
@@mostlyvoid.partiallystars Definitely agree. My friend used to love meeting the obscure famous people. See he would talk about it like she knew them. Used to creep me out.
Great commentary on CrimeCom. Thx for sharing the pic with you and Emily. Plz share the pic of you in Norwegian folk garb. I would think it would be embarassing to you if you were 15, but now it would be charming to the rest of us!
I have a Norweigen Forest Cat! I rescued him from Southern Alberta Vet Emergency! His name is Snowy aka Sir Snowington, Fuzz Butt, and Stubby (he has half a tail.)
Ian, don't worry about looking stupid in ancestral dress. In high school, I was part of a "Polka Band and Gun Club." (No shit. Edelweiss Gun Club und Polka band." Started by a couple who fled Germany (over the alps) during WWI.) I needed lederhosen. My mother took a pair of corduroy shorts and stitched a set of suspenders to them. Yeah, looking back, they didn't look the part. (But my mom tried.) Wore that for the two years I was in the band. But I had fun, and that's all that really mattered.
Mail carrier here, who gets given dog spray for my job and has absolutely sprayed myself directly in the eyes with it on accident - it does nothing. Barely stung my eyes for 5 seconds. I’ve seen dogs lick it up lol. Don’t use dog spray as self defense, probably not even against dogs.
Im super not a fan of Bowles. He doesn't appear to be a good lawyer imo and I personally wouldn't hire him. Hannah and Baldwin need to own their mistakes because both of them messed the f up. They are both super responsible for what happened to Mrs Hutchins in their own way. It is never the victims fault.
Interesting ethical points. I enjoy historical true crimes where people effected are now dead, or true crime where it is straight reporting of a closed case. Finally I enjoy true crime like yours that looks at the legal aspects of a cases and I learn from them. I try to avoid the sensationalist current true crime.
I agree. While adding on I also like the respectful coverage of an old cold case. Hate sensationalist true crime coverage and "creators", those victims and their cases are not there to give you content.
I loved hearing you talk about meeting Emily- Those snacks sound super tasty! Really hope my hubby & I can meet you someday. We are travelling to Canada from Australia in 2025 for my work & we’d love to come say hello! 👋🏻
I have depression. I cannot own a gun. It would not be safe. Which is part of why people who are all “But a good guy with a gun” tick me off. I do not have the option if I want to avoid using it on myself. (Note: I’m fine right now. But I have not always been fine and do not know if I will not be fine in the future.)
Oh absolutely, this is why my dream is to get a protection breed dog (I like tough, stubborn dogs and big dogs by nature. The round pointy things in their mouth are just a bonus.)
@@simpsondr12Uh, I’m not specifically making a point about “other people.” Beyond that by having poor gun control, my life is more dangerous because people who oppose gun control say that the best way to stop guns is more guns. But I can’t own a gun, so my life is more at risk than it could otherwise be because I cannot do what they claim is the easy solution. (Never mind that they’re wrong that the solution is more guns or nobody in Texas would ever get shot.)
I'm sorry to hear that. But it doesn't change the facts that A. Guns are by far the most effective defensive tool accessible to humanity, And B. That the good guy with a gun adage is valid.
@@somedude5297 It’s not valid, at least in the US. We have so many guns per capita, but so much gun violence. Not just crime, but accidental shootings and suicides. Just owning a gun increases the likelihood someone in your family will be a victim of gun violence.
As a Norwegian I wholeheartedly embrace you and your Norwegian ancestry, Ian! I had a kid version of bunad when I was a little girl. Now I have an adult one. It's called Nord-Trondelag bunad and it's the local bunad from the region I'm from. It's in three colors blue, rust and burgundy. Coincidentally I have the rust colored one. 😂
So glad you loved meeting Emily 💜. I definitely trust your judgement so it's really good to hear that she really is an all dressed chips addict and nice person. She knew you told chat you'll bring a suitcase full but I don't think she expected it to really be that many
Wow. In Australia it’s 14 years imprisonment for carrying pepper spray. 🤦🏻♀️ The article the government put out basically says to avoid dangerous situations. Great.
That’s not true in all states, 14 years is the max inNSW because it’s classified as a dangerous weapon, you would never receive the maximum. I am not a lawyer, so check this all yourself. But my understanding is it is: In Qld it’s 4 years (Not 7 as I initially said). In Vic the maximum penalty is 2 yrs and most other states, being classified as a dangerous article. In WA you can carry it without a permit. Funnily enough, the people most likely to get caught with pepper spray are criminals. And gun control in Australia has worked pretty well. If you’ve seen the stand up joke about making bullets expensive, guns are like that in Au. Criminals often rent guns from other crims, and have to pay through the nose if they are used. AR 15s are about $30k.
Avoiding the potentially dangerous situation is always your best bet defensively. That said, you shouldn’t not be able to go for a run just because there are “people.” Live your life safely, peeps!
Runkle, I think you would be a complete joy to be around. I think others would agree. Yes, we love EDB, we also love you... I'm always impressed at how well you understand American Law & it's interesting to learn the difference between Canada & US laws. I'm sorry, Americans can be super rude & ignorant. Opportunistic also. It's gross... I've met many more great people that asshats tho... It's OK to not like people. Grifters suck IMO. ❤
I’m American and yeah we can definitely be rude & ignorant, thankfully not all of us but certainly enough. I think every country has them, we just have a very particular flavor here in the US of A.
Ian, let us know if you ever take the trip to Bergen, Norway! I find the weather to often be best in may and june 😂 Our national day is the 17th of may, and worth experiencing! Tons of people in bunad and lots of parades, and everyone is usually in a party mood 😁
I need Runkle to review the effectiveness (and modern legality) of historical women's self-defense fashion. Like the women's hat pin. Maybe tag in Bernadette Banner or Nicole Rudolph for historical sources and knowledge.
So cool to hear you have norwegian inheritage! And we have the similar type of folk national costume in Finland too! 😊 Actually maybe the whole Skandinavia does.. not sure though.
Sweden definitely does, yes, but the folk costumes are regional! (Like 1/3 of the styles are from the county of Dalarna, obviously. (That's generally the place where we keep our traditions.))
FYI in UK it is illegal to carry wet spaghetti for use in self defence. In fact the moment you say you are carrying anything for self defence you have just broken the law. Insane
Wow. How the F does this $h happen ?!?!? I ask because I'm sure it will happen in the US. But if there is any hope at all it is to learn from mistakes. Do the vast majority if people in UK and AUS really feel safer with these insane laws? To a very very limited extent I can appreciate (but not agree with) restrictions on guns. But you cannot kill someone with pepper spray! I mean, a baseball bat is far more deadly. And the bad guys can and do use baseball bats! What do you do, especially as a weak woman with a disability? Lol I don't need one but I guess I'd consider a cane....
I think because crimecon was in Nashville and Rob, Emily D Baker, and Ian had a chance to hang it was a good time to try it out. I will be surprised they will be annual attendants unless it was a good visibility/marketing opportunity for them to meet law nerds. I liked the meet and greet was outside of crimecon for us real fans who are kind and well, law nerds who have followed you. Idk it is interesting you see a different vibe even with the live chat from regulars vs say TB enthusiasts. Starting arguments w Runkle or calling him an opportunist, and I’m like … no you don’t know he wants to do defense probono, etc. so yeah, plus and minuses I guess.
@@valiakloeppel7252 its like the gym when you attend in Jan and Feb you may get some new regulars but the new year's resolution ppl who arent particularly your vibe weed out mid feb. There has been recent chat that give runkle a hard time but clearly dont know what he is about, about his annual fundraiser to childrens' hospital that rivals organizations, etc. Its not like he cant handle it, just annoying.
I’m at the part about women-exploiting items and companies, where you recognise that you’re also whitest of white male. Just wanted to say I freaking love your work and your cu Edgar and the particular care you take when covering topics of diversity 💜
Immune to pepperspray here. Had a guy demo a car security system (when the alarm goes off, it floods the car with pepper spray). I sat in the pepperspray flooded car for over 10 minutes with no issue. When they opened the door, everyone around the car had an instant reaction. Note that that system got the creater arrested for it in 2011 (Lookup Dragon Anti-Intrusion in Quebec).
When it comes to the "awareness" book seller.... I really appreciate podcasters like Crime Weekly who are selling coffee and using the proceeds to fund cold cases. They've helped solve one already.
Hello, Im from Bergen, Norway. The Bunad may be funny looking, but it is quite pricey. I’m saving for one for my daughter. They cost between 3500 and 6000 American dollars. The Bergens Bunad cost 5100$.
In Germany peper spray is "animal protection spray" and it has to be marked on the spray itself, but you got not charged if it is used in selfdefence. You gave excactly my thoughts about thoose selfdefence "toys". Taser are allowed but they have to pass the german TÜV (technical verify system; all technical things have to, cars too). In the 90's we had a joke..."I am going to hit you with cotton balls until you are bleeding..." imo ind sound excactly like that. The key! (just one between pointy finger and thumb), and if possiable! reach for week areas like balls, nose, neck ad least that what I learned 20 years ago. What do you think about the reality show by A.Baldwin comming up? Imo, Hannah had the resoncebillity as she signed up for it, it is nobodys fault if thoose shoes where way to big for her. Blaime Helena is like speeking with pain, sure she might have walked out, but she made the best out of this mass and stayed.
I'm happy to have the recaps and get your opinions of being in the court room live! The hard thing about these Livestreams is that it is hard to keep up with. The shorter recaps with you personal observations would be much more interesting to me.
Since Hannah is already serving time on a maximum 18-month sentence seems like it would be easy to offer full immunity if her trial is reversed on appeal. By the time anything like that could possibly happen she will already have served 9 mos or a year. Doesn't seem like re-trying the case should be that high a priority.
Retrying would not be about the sentence, but the felony conviction. As a convicted felon, she is barred from possessing a firearm for the rest of her life. There is also the issue that she is facing another trial for a different charge (unlawfully carrying a firearm in a licensed liquor establishment).
@@charliefoxtrot5001 I don't see keeping her a convicted felon as being a big must-have, either. This is a crime of negligence, not one of violent criminal intent. She is never going to have the opportunity to work on a film set with firearms again whether or not the conviction sticks, and the chances of a successful appeal are slim at best. Making a deal to get the best chance possible for a Baldwin conviction seems like a good tradeoff for that remote possibility. I wouldn't see any need to negotiate away the other charge.
@@MichaelOnines I think you misunderstand a few things. A "deal" for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed isn't even on the table. She had a joint prosecution agreement with Baldwin and is on Baldwin's witness list. She is also on the prosecution's witness list. This creates an odd constitutional issues, where she could testify for Baldwin's defense, but not be cross examined by the prosecution. The Prosecution has asked the judge to give her use immunity for the testimony, which would eliminate those issues. The judge now can either not give her use immunity and disallow her testimony for both sides, or give her use immunity and allow it. In any case, none of this is up to Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. As for a potential win on the appeal, retrying Hannah Gutierrez-Reed would be much easier, as her jail calls that happened after her conviction are admissible. She incriminated herself on those too, in addition to all the other testimony she gave to investigators. Also, letting her off the hook without a conviction won't fly in the court of public opinion either. She will be retried, during which time she will likely not receive bail. She violated her past bail terms. So, once the new trial is over, she will get convicted again and sentenced to time served. Also, giving her full immunity is highly problematic for the other charge (unlawfully carrying a firearm in a licensed liquor establishment) to be tried in court without running into at least some conflicts with the immunity. In any case, again, an immunity deal isn't even on the table.
I didn’t go to Crimecon though it was tempting. My puppers would have been very upset since I’m going to be gone for 10 days next month. Plus I’m an introvert and it would have been very difficult, though I would love to meet you and Rob in addition to Emily!
Some creator start late , or a day later so zoom thru all the stuff that don't matter, and still view in real time. Such a time saver, and I watch as Psuedo YTR Juror. Downside, most people probably want on the day.
I would love a video on situational awareness. Most Americans I know are really bad in that area (way too much focus on phones). I remember going to Berne, Switzerland - the buses, trains, cars and bikes all assumed you would watch out for yourself. There were also stores in cellars below street level with the doors open and water ways coming down from the mountain where some of the grates were missing. It was a good exercise in situational awareness.
"If you're in the UK then you're probably allowed to protect yourself with a piece of uncooked spaghetti." It's the same here in Australia! Legally you're not allowed to carry any kind of weapon (outside of legitimate certified reasons)! I used to live in a really unsafe area (constantly heard gunfire), and I was always terrified that I had no protection, even in daylight hours!
Get an artist alley table at the next comic book convention in Edmonton or Calgary! Bring your leatherwork! I’ll make a special road trip up to see ya!
27:06 Absolutely! When I went to concealed carry classes they said do not let the other person know you have a gun unless you’re prepared to use it, because it makes you a bigger target and they can use it against you.
23:38 Yes! You need training (!) with the weapons and be mentally prepared for things not working. Hitting someone like Joe Schmoe with a baton can be effective. But hitting Junkie Junkson high off his mind with horse tranqulizers is a different animal. I heard a story about a colleague that hit a guy on the thigh with his baton about 10 times, nothing happened. But when he lightly pushed the man making him take a step then the man went to the ground. Why? The step activated muscles and bloodflow. So you have to be mentally prepared for things not having the effectiveness that you expected and have a plan B. Also you need to know where the line of self defence is and where it turns to assault.
I'm glad you had fun, and I totally understand needing a break. (I'm the one who brought the watermelon whiskey friday to the falls), it was great to meet yall in person and see yall are real people! Lol I think we all get needing a break from the social stuff.
Regarding preserving Bowles’ signature on the dummies, could you make an epoxy resin cube/square thing with them in the centre, (as in pouring the epoxy over the dummies placed in a mould) or would that be bad in terms of chemical reactions & such? Wondering, as I have some dummies given to me from a Nic Cage film that was shot here in Australia on which I worked.
PSA: Bring earplugs _everywhere._ Reason: Fire alarms. It ruined my aunt's life. By the time she got down the (very echo-y) staircase at work, the damage was done. So keep earplugs in your desk, your purse, wherever. Fire alarms can happen anytime. As a Belgian, my opinion on self-defense weapons is that they usually do more harm than good. In places where these things are legal, every small criminal has some too because self-defense weapons are also weapons. Yes, I know I'm talking to a gun guy... That being said, I also live in a country where most bad guys don't carry a weapon. I'd feel differently if I was living across the big pond. The best free, legal, and universal self-defense is indeed situational awareness. And also dogs. Dogs, dogs, dogs! So take the dog with you, ladies! They have better situational awareness than any human, you know how to handle your dog while the bad guy has no idea how loud or annoying your dog is, and bad guys just really don't want to deal with your flooffriend. If I have to go out alone at night or in a rural area, my collie's coming with me. Makes me feel safe, him happy, and bad people sad.
My sister was in Air Force JAG. For officer training, they were trained in various weapons, including tazers. She volunteered to be tazed, 🙄. She dropped like a puppet w/ cut strings. But, this was with a military issue tazer, and she's like 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and maybe 120 lbs (54 kgs) in uniform.
blaming Halayna for her death is like handing someone a big ol pot of poison labelled sugar, and then commenting that it's not many poisoning victims that serve themselves the poisoned tea. Her job was as a filmographer! There was an armourer on set, if Hannah had done her job properly then Halayna would still be out there doing hers 😢
It would be great for you to talk about situational awareness. Walking on city streets I was always shocked at how unaware people are. Spending summers hiking the Ozarks taught me to be aware. You should take a walk in a city you don't live in and speak out loud what you are doing, what you are noticing, what you avoid. It would be so instructional.
I have a lot of my mother’s friends asking me about self defense tools for their daughters as they head off to college. They aren’t fans of me saying it’s practically useless in the event of an actual assault. Oh well glad to see it’s not just me who has distaste for these “self defense” items.
Petersburg Alaska was a Norwegian village, at one time highest income because they were halibut fisherman. Celebrate May 17th, with traditional clothes and OMG, best food and pastries.
And I think it’s socially draining even for people that are very outgoing and social very intense. Emily really reflected on it and after I heard all her remarks I felt better that I actually didn’t go. It was pretty expensive and I think in the future we’re gonna get to all meet each other, everybody who follows Emily and you follow The Lawyer You Know and Rob and that would be a fun group.

Identify, not a party pooper, pooped by the party. On stage, an actor in my profession, but totally shy awkward in social situation, just like 1 on 1 or 1 to2 1 to 3 ok, 1 to 4 , stressed, 1 to 5, I am out of here. You are endearing and suitcase is ADHD, ...
A lot of well-known performers are introverted. Doing your own thing in front of a huge faceless crowd can be less daunting than participating in a group chat with half a dozen strangers.
So I will say that especially for POC, publicity and getting the attention they deserve in missing persons cases can be hard. I imagine they're not thinking that just buying their book will help, cuz that's never really the goal of an author. They aren't hoping you stick it on a shelf somewhere, they're hoping you buy it, read it, share it, and get people talking about it. Buuuuuut I agree that wasn't the tactful way to handle it. Promotion seems like it should be in kind; there are free ways to get people talking, and if you're gonna charge money then you should be donating some of it.
Turns out, I'd enlisted as CBRN, went to training, discovered I'm immune to CS. Went to work corrections, now I'm on medications that make me super sensitive to capsaicin, I'm fine until I have to talk (or yell commands) then its like I'm chewing on a chili. Just gotta fight through it. But I don't notice any burn. (Unfortunately that meant I got selected to decon cells cause we couldn't have inmates do it.)
You really do have to come to Australia! Literally noone comes here and we are all jealous of Nth America and Europe bcs they get All The Things! Get a bunch of us to go in for your costs, we will totes turn up bcs it's like we bought tickets to the Runkle-Fest 😁 I love what you said about having to skip out on a dinner you really wanted to go to bcs you were all peopled out. Peopling is EXHAUSTING. Sometimes if cant leave I just have to go hide in the bathroom for a while to reset. Curiously, peopling with other neurospicies isn't as exhausting.
One annoying thing about pink and baby blue being marked as the colour of ineffective girly crap is that it'd be a great colour for hunting or survival knives, since it'll stand out in the undergrowth if you drop it regardless of season. Same reason why if you carry an emergency lighter, emergency bad or similar, it should be pink, blue, or both if you can manage it You might think orange, but there's this thing called autumn
On the defensive tools front, I like the option of using POM OC Spray. It seems to work from the videos I've watched and the limited testing I did on myself. It has enough color options to appeal to those who are concerned about that sort of thing, and it is about $12 or so.
Please do a video in your favorite knives, as you mentioned the other day! Bonus points if any of them happen to be pink. I 100% agree with your point about bedazzled worthless self defense tools for girls, especially female businesses doing the exploiting. It's like those absolutely worthless pink toolkits for women with the WORST tools ever. But at the same time.... I do really want a pink toolkit! And a turquoise drill. Not teal like Makita, turquoise like Tiffany. And a violet knife with a rainbow titanium damascus blade. I'll pay a tiny bit more but.... only if it works as good as the ugly version in like camo and orange. Looks like Sabre makes canisters that are pink and bedazzled, no stupid sleeves, and performing as well as the black versions. I'm all about that. And I mean, kitchen aid makes all around the best mixer. And it works just as well in black as it does in the other billion colors it comes in. Why can't Black and Decker make a pink chainsaw? I realize function trumps form. So I mean, if not pink, at least some nice sleek plain elegant black knives. Like, not the kind grandpa had. Also bonus points for looking scary.
Also, as suggested I would love to try and check out guns. My state heavily restricts them. But... More importantly... I cannot allow myself to own a gun. I'm all about protecting my second ammendment rights. And all about everyone else demonstrating it. But with rights come responsibility. With a history of major depressive disorder.... no. SI is brief but intense. The harder your plan is to execute, the more likely you stay safe. So guns are seriously seriously dangerous. Statistically, I really am the biggest threat to my safety. I'm fine today, I think I'll be fine tomorrow and forever but.... guns are too quick. If people know their limits and don't act irresponsibly, then people don't get tempted to write stupid laws. I vehemently would oppose blanket statement laws that would ban everybody with any mental health history from gun ownership. But it's good to talk about all aspects of reponsible gun ownership. And a huge part of that includes that includes SI. We all know of a few people who died that way, probably more than we know of who were murdered. If someone you love is going through a hard time, the best thing to do actually to ask them if they're thinking about it and encourage them to temporarily relinquish access to their firearms. Contrary to popular belief, talking about it helps. And that's another reason why blanket statement laws are a bad idea. If someone is afraid of their guns being taken away, are they like to admit when they are having a mental health crisis? No! Normalize admitting you're having a problem and let someone you trust keep your gun safely away from you until you're stable.
I go to many cons, but they relate to Anime, Renaissance, Comic and Gaming topics. I was about to comment that it is always caveat emptor regarding provenance, cost and quality of the products available for purchase. After some thought, I agree that at this type of con there should be a higher bar for truth in advertising. Selling less than effective devices to customers who do not have effective security training or knowledge, but who have a strong need for security should equate to fraud. As for that particular mention of Halyna Hutchins in the RUST panel, that is beyond contemptible. BTW I hope the police have not only warned Runkle, but also alerted appropriate individuals in this mentally unstable person's home turf.
