For the record, when Tolkien does that hook hand in the "stole my R R" line, that's literally R in sign language.

There is a slight flaw in your analysis of the "You even stole my RR" line. You argue that it would have been better to put that right after the "You hob-bit my whole shit..." line in the beginning. However, you have to take a step back and think about the overall context of the battle rap. Which is the more important point to emphasize early? Point A, "Lets go to War in an Epic Battle of Rap" or Point B, "You stole from me?". Point B is a subset of Point A, Point A is the more important point especially in the context of early framing for the entire conflict. You are correct though, putting the "You Stole My RR line" with the "You hob-bit my whole shit" line does give both points more punch and emphasis. However, as is, the "Welcome to Shire-Raq" line is better for the rap overall.

I normally wouldn't comment on this, but I think the reason a lot of people want you to do these is because you sound, and present yourself as intelligent. You also know what you are talking about when it comes to use of language. Your arguments are quite coherent, thats why I watch these and look forward to these, they confirm my opinions of but also present new material.

I'm sure you've gotten this comment a few times now, but on the note of the Raven line. In literary works, ravens are often used as symbolism for death and seperation. George R R Martians work is no exception. When someone has extreme diabetes, one of the many things that is often done to try and benefit their health is to cut off some of their toes in an attempt to remove some of the distance their blood must travel.

It's funny when you talk about you not being the only person ERB has to please, and the sad truth of that is that there are very few people as... I don't want to say smart, but analytical and intelligent as you are who watch ERB. I think that ERB has an excellent balance of wordplay and smart references along with something that will keep the lowest common denominator entertained, but after watching every Chisel This! episode it has already started to mold my mind into becoming more like your way of thinking. Not only can you impress people, but it's just fun to try to come up with the double, triple, even quadruple entendres that most people can't even dream of doing or even comprehend what an "entendre" is. Great video Mat, as always it brought a new light to both ERB, my way of thinking, and Chisel This! as a whole. I like the new format, I really like when you write lines that could work instead of just explaining what doesn't (though both are entertaining) and while I enjoy the character of Mat4yo explaining the lyrics like a tape recorded from Genius.com, this allows my thoughts to flow more freely and inspire me to write and work on things more. Which, as you said, is the end goal of these videos. So i'd say, from an un-biased perspective, that you're pretty damn good at what you do. Good luck with your career, and i'll be eagerly awaiting all new content from you, be it a Pokemon rap, 4nology, or another ERB video. Thank you for brightening my Monday in a way no other content creator can.

I just realized that martin actually did say a rebuttal to something tolkien said. When tolkien said "from a dude who needs a raven to say hi to his toes" martin said "man your fat jokes are worse than your pipe smoke" which is a rebuttal to tolkiens comment and counters with an insult to tolkien

Great video as always Matt, as many have said we watch because intrinsic analysis is interesting, even when it is harsh - unless you have no desire to continue doing these episodes, do keep doing them. However, on that note, I would like to address what you said at the start, and have said before, in regards to us as viewers demanding to see these ERB episodes. You, as a creator, are under no obligation to make these - they are your productions and it is unfair of us to demand them. However, as viewers we have a right to watch what we choose to, whether that be your own rap creations that you clearly love to make, or, more commonly, these videos, which are popular but I somehow imagine you don't enjoy creating as much. Again, you can create as you will, but you also have to accept that we as viewers are under no obligation to watch everything you create - we may only watch these if we choose. But this is harsh criticism for a youtuber I enjoy watching as much as you. Ignoring all that, keep up the good work!

When there are new ERBP battles ?

The only problem I can think of with Rebuttals being a permanent thing is that it might make certain characters, I guess seemingly win automatically... Let me explain. If each person did react and say certain things to the next person's line, then the person who would end it would have the last rebuttal and last word, it seems a bit unfair, sorta. Usually Last words, to me at least, seem to leave an impact to these ERBs. But I don't know. I may be wrong.

Good analysis, as a Martin and Tolkien fan I liked it. Nevertheless, I think this battle is basing Martin and his work on the HBO show and not that much on the writer of the books he wrote (that's the lack of "Ice and Fire" reference). And Martin can be very predictable too, as in you can see how A and B will end up together; and the twist is that then A and B die... although, wait, Shakespeare didn't that? :D

I would love it if you analyzed actual rap battles. Like The Saurus vs Rone for example

I believe the middle Earth reference was in the "Want a war George? Welcome to Shire-raq!" Which relates GRR Martin's name, George, to that of George W. Bush. As well as connecting that to the MIDDLE East, which for the longest time in history, was considered the center of the world due to it's central location between China's and Europe's areas. Now it no longer is it, which could be a self jab to acknowledge that his books are no longer the center of the world or the MIDDLE of EARTH, but still taking pride in the fact that at one time, he was mightier than George will ever be... So mighty that he'll beat him just like Iraq kinda did to George's career as a politician (I mean who cares about no child left behind, George fought in Iraq and DIDN'T WIN. He didn't lose either, he just never finished what he started leaving the mess to others.) Another layer to this is still another comparison to George W. Bush's military career and Martin's lack of one. Bush was a pilot, and many infantrymen disliked the airforce, especially during WW1, because they thought the pilots were all nice and comfy up in the sky and eating steak behind the trenches safely out of artillery and fighting men range, all while the infantrymen were stuck in the trenches taking on the brunt of the attackers. This is compared to Martin because he was not an actual warrior like Tolkien, like you said, and neither was Bush, according to Tolkien since they both just "watched" the grunts fighting and dying from afar. Boom, over analysis for the win!!

I feel like they could've made room for more dissed by condensing the cut teeth and biting off lines, while adding in a dentures reference. I'm not too good at rap writing, but maybe something like: You cut your teeth on fairy Tails then you bit off of my books, I cut my dentures in the war, and I still got my looks. =|

+Mat4yo I want here to comment (mainly) on one thing that seriously bugged me in this battle: about "casting boobies" and portrayal of Denerys Tangaryen for that situation. She is 12-14 years old (at least in the beginning, she is 12), played by 24-29 year old actress in the show. Quite disturbing, don't you think? Yes, I know, that in this universe it works more like like medieaval concept of deeming woman as adult when after the first period. Denerys while marrying Khali Drogo was 13 (might have misspelled it or be little wrong with her exact age at that moment, since I don't watch show nor read this series) or so. As such, many important characters in SoIaF are really young and could be considered underage in modern times, but they play such role in universe since they were considered adults faster and also had to mature faster than in our times. Examples: Arya Stark is like 9 at the beginning, Jon Snow is 16 at the beginning. But in the show, many of those characters are played by adult actors or by actors who are at least couple of years older then roleplayed characters for several reasons. That distorts overall view of the show a bit. And then.... just search how these actors looked, when they were at age of characters they are/were playing and try to imagine scenes TV series with these appearances... I am finding it very disturbing and cringy, that people at ERB chose to include Denerys to portray this arguement... (if it would be an adult character, like Cersei, then I would be rather ok) ...and the fact, that hardly nobody I've known reacting to that battle (not only on YT) nor watching the show (in general) noticed it verbally or even cared/care about that aspect or even realise it consiously (might have misspelt that) at all... mostly because they knows it only as Game of Thrones... and not as SoIaF (novels). What do you think about it? Also, SoIaF is to me like 85-90% alternative War of two Roses mixed with many concepts from real history and general medieaval war or vendettas and 10-15% fantasy (dragons, old prophecies, magic and everything at the north after The Wall - also general idea of White Walkers as a force seems awfully familiar to idea of White Frost from the Witcher universe). And regarding alternative/overlooked lyric ideas... I really like that you merged them as stand-alone segment.

JRRT still competes from grave via book sales & the LOTR & Hobbit Movies. As for back story GRRM does a lot of back story too so not really in position to criticise that. JRRT actually completed LOTR whereas the jury's still out as to whether GOT will get completed before GRRM dies from a heart attack or something.

Tbh I would have changed Martin's entire verse. Instead of having him lift up his gut to black out the camera, I would have had Martin shove Tolkien into the prison in King's Landing where Zack or someone else would be dressed up as C.S Lewis. Martin continues his verse then slams the door, thinking he has won, and THAT'S when Tolkien rebutts, and has one of the LOTR eagles rescue him from the cell and to finish his verse he raps on the eagle that brings him back to his background.
