Sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the login password. I love any help you can give me
@Bobby Brantley thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Originally I was going show up and explain my role in this episode, but extreme essay writing forced me to cancel! Here's the lines that I wrote for this battle: Darwin wants to battle? Doesn't seem like a fight! But this should be fun, I'm yet to catch the ghost type! Got the highest speed stat, drop raps lightning fast! ... Look! Mighty Morphin Michael Vick, Your animated slave fights make me sick! (I wrote the original version and Pete revised it) I also contributed to many of the lyric ideas/important pokemon information with Matteo and the visual design!
VideoGameRapBattles The slave fights line didn't really make sense to me because of the jealousy that wild Pokemon have of captured Pokemon. Not to mention the relationships between trainer and Pokemon. Please help me understand the line more.
For me, the 'barnacle dick' line exists to accentuate how young Ash is; this is textbook something that a 10 year old would obsess over, and think is hilariously dumb, and telling of how boring Darwin is in the eyes of a child. Just another way the whole teacher vs. student, old vs. young dynamic plays out for me :)
I think like Emikat88. Also, if you ever watched some accapella rap battles it often sound like that when an MC does a flip. "Ayo, before I start my verse I have to respond to what you just said even if nobody cares." It sound childish and it kind of ruins the performance.
For me, darwin is just an older donald trump, a man child, a ken, considering he looks up shitty Pokemon fan theories, and settled with one of them as an elementary school mom joke. How could darwin ever be a teacher to ash? He stole the basic idea of evolution from his grand father, and created his own hypothesis of how passing genes work, and of course, it was wrong (and the discovery of how they work predated his dumb mentally stupid inbred ideas because an asian plant breeder discovered how it actually worked as darwin was writing his book, because he actually bothered to make experiments while darwin was blowing pipe smoke, banging his cousin, and ergo, inadvertently killing his own children.) Just like all of darwin's assaults toward ash, plain wrong. Ash has a bigger boomstick? anime ash doesn't even have a shotgun, he has a dragon that can melt boulders. Pokemon's only worth is merchandise sales? Try the most popular video game of all time, try the most expansive and competitive turn based rpg of all time. Pokemon are slaves? Then why does Charizard roam free in the anime and come back to ash to help him? Darwin made thousands of animals a slave to science by killing and dissecting them, also ash did turn 11 a couple times, his first turn to 11 was in an animated short, pikachu and pichu an episode that celebrated the day that ash first met Pikachu which was celebrated on that same day in the episode, the day Ash turned 10. Ash also turns 11 to compete in the sun and moon trials. Source: 5 seconds of googling.
I think Ash's barnacle dick line worked really well, because it had another effect: Darwin had just finished a verse mainly praising reason and science, and Ash basically said "yo dude, I'm a kid. nobody cares." And he has a point; in the world of Pokemon, rationality isn't that big of a deal. As a scholar myself, I can attest that this was a damn hard blow.
I noticed that you didn't mention that the moment the beat stops, both characters turn to 'the fourth wall', which suddenly becomes more than just us watching the video. It's like Ash is addressing an audience that is not us, which I thought was really cool. Darwin is actually surprised that there's an audience to address there, and when he nods along Ash's comment about 'barnacle dick' as though he still considers it a valid topic of research. Another thing in that same sequence of shots, is that when the beat returns right around 'Kick it', Darwin actually reacts to the next cut of Ash dropping into the frame; it surprises him. I think that's one of the best scene in the battles so far, because of how it cements Darwin as an old man not familiar with technology, makes Ash appear more young and competitive, while at the same time also acknowledging that there is an audience there that the characters are performing for. It's like the two characters step out of the frame for a moment, and then re-enter the battle when the beat returns. I thought that was actually the reason for that shifting bar, although it's funny that it parallels the new games too, great thing to spot. Loved the analysis otherwise, well done!
Bro the newest one for the audio seems like a large improvement. I love how they have pretty much no cursing and instead substitute it with words with meaning.
I didnt realize how smart the "you got no game, boy" line is. It has so many different meanings. 1. Gameboy reference 2. Calling him a child who has no skill 3. Ash doesnt appear in any of the games Erb is genius
First off, thank you for Darwin's "Hello there" section. That made me flip out when I first saw it. Otherwise, this is definitely one of my favorite battles. I did find a few lines questionable ("Reese's Pieces" really made me curious what tied it into the characters, so when it turned out there wasn't anything to tie it in, that made me mildly disappointed), but overall it was great. There were a few things I would have like mentioned that weren't most notably being the metamorphosis versus evolution thing you touched on. My hypothetical lines for that would be: "Your metamorphosis expands evolution misconceptions See, animals gain traits meant to fend off predator aggression That's not same as the gain of a chocolate stick at level 47! Then predators would prefer to select your natural confection!" Expect, like, with reoccurring internal rhyme to make it flow properly. I mostly just like the idea of making fun of the Vanillite evolutionary line, plus making fun of the improper use of evolution, and calling it a "natural confection" seemed cute. I also was kinda hoping for some reference to how some extremely-religious communities dislike Pokemon for "promoting non-[insert-group-name-here] values", like how Charles Darwin is also disliked in some extremely-religious communities for being a proponent of evolution. I'm not surprised it wasn't mentioned, it's pretty obscure, but is another trait that connects Ash and Darwin. But, even without those, it was a great battle. Good work!
I actually found your channel based on ERB's shout out to you. Really happy you got to be involved. Your commentary is some of the most intelligent content I've seen on RU-vid; keep it up!
I think I honestly prefer the "it's called natural selection and it won't choose you!" line he came up with as an alternative. I don't know, it just seems a lot more hard-hitting and crueller than the "and when I need a weak verse, I choose you" line they eventually did use in the battle.
That's because mine ties together both sides. 'SELECTION" and "CHOOSE" are two things that can't be linked TO anyone else FROM anyone else. i think they went with that to make a gag joke but I'm happy you saw my side
I agree, I like the connection between them it makes with the actual cruel sounding punchline rather than a transition verse just to get the line in there.
Congratulations on your involvement, well I should actually congratulate NicePeter, and the gang as you clearly added a lot of awesomeness to the rap battle. (^_^)
Mat4yo in ERB? So glad that he gets to write Man, this should be fun! He truly supplied the hype! This parody of Ash's verse was brought to you by GamingPlush64's brain and was written in 1 minute.
Well what do you know! My two gripes with the video were the Reese's Pieces line and the pause in the instrumental. I come over to this video and...well you had the same reservation. In short...subbed!
Just thought I'd leave this here. OAK: Pokémon behavior Elm: Pokémon breeding habits Birch: Pokémon habitats Rowan: Pokémon Evolution patterns Juniper: (I forgot) Sycamore: Mega evolution Kukui: Pokémon moves Samson OAK: Pokémon names
I really like your idea of Darwin making fun of the fact that Ash basically restarts with each new season, wjich is the very opposite of evolution, it's a shame it didn't make the final cut. I didn't have any problem with the barnacle dick joke though - I just saw it as yet another comparison of Ash being an immature boy VS the old professor Darwin who would never even stop to think it's weird that he studies such a thing. Also, I'm really glad that you had that much influence in this erb, can't imagine a more appropriate person.
I don't know if this was already said, but I believe they wanted to keep the 'candy rap' part in the battle was because Brian Walters, the guy who plays Ash Ketchum, as a RU-vid segment called 'Candy Raps'.
I always thought the way ERB went on was intensive research, but in this video that escalated 100x. I love how much work they put into each battle even if the end result isn't always favored by the audience. Great job in helping create this battle and I love the Critical Analysis series.
"...and NOT Professor Oak, even though the professor studies evolution" No, that would be Professor Rowan. Oak studies the RELATIONSHIPS of Humans and Pokemon. And you call yourself a Pokemon fan?! >:P In all seriousness, I've been waiting for this video after I had watched the battle when it came out, and I love it. When I heard the line "Hello there, welcome to a world called Earth. Where actual minds do ground breaking work!", the first thing I thought was "Matteo definitely had something to do with this line!" and this video confirmed my thought. Also, a lot of the lines you came up with that didn't make it into the final video are lines that I would've love to hear in the final product. One thing that I'm surprised that you didn't mention in your video is ERB's use of Ash's Kalos attire instead of his original attire; I thought that might've been something you told them to do, since Ash in the Pokemon X and Y anime was probably Ash at his best. Anyways, it's awesome that you got to help with an ERB with this battle, and I'm glad they had you help with this battle, because if they didn't, I feel that the battle wouldn't have been as good as it is. So what I'm saying is: thank you for helping ERB create my new favorite battle in their series! :) ...Also, I don't know why, but for some very weird reason, I was kind of hoping there would be a line that went like, "...And your rhymes are even worse than your new Alola form!" or something like that, because...well...just take a look at Ash's new Sun and Moon anime design if you haven't already. XD
1. I was just targeting the criticism about it not being Oak vs Darwin... in general, the professors are what *study* anything in Pokemon. I didn't mean that Oak exclusively studies evolution, but I was maintaining the argument on a realistic basis 2. I guess that gave off my vibe, huh? XD 3. Just to cut down the length of the video & to not make it seem like I was bragging, I didn't talk about my involvement in the costume. Pete ran several designs by me before they made the costume. They were going to go with the Gen 5 design before I suggested they either do Gen 1 or Gen 6. But Gen 1 had both blue and green in it so that wouldn't work. 4. Thank you for appreciating what I do!
Yea, exactly my thoughts, I had no idea about that line and I get frustrated when they make so much references that only local viewers from US/NorthAmerica would understand
The only thing I would have added would have been a diss or reference from Darwin based on Slowpoke Tails, and how that is the extent of sustenance that Pokemon provide to humans, while the real animals are used mostly for food. Could have referenced Team Rocket's deeds in Pkmn Gold... Good Luck though!!! You are currently my fav U-tuber.
While it's my least favorite line of the rap, I think the barnacle line works as a way to separate the combatants in a few ways, including in terms of maturity. A typical ten year old would consider that part of Darwin's work to be some earth-shattering diss, something he would make sure all his classmates were around to hear, while an adult understands that work isn't always awesome. Sometimes you have to do things you don't want to, and it makes me think of the show Dirty Jobs. It also reinforces your point about Darwin working for the good of humanity and Ash working for personal glory. Ash couldn't fathom doing something so 'gross' because it wouldn't advance his own goals.
I really like how you get into the visuals of the rap battle. There are a lot of details that I don't pick up on, or see the significance, or think about all the work that put into making it look the way that it does, like the zoom in on Ash's eye. It's also interesting how different lines have different purposes, like the base level references, the Reeses' Pieces line to keep the rhyme scheme going, etc.
Is it strange that when I saw the rap battle, I *automatically* knew that you were a part of it? :P Man, they seriously need to have you and VGRB physically participate in any official ERB. It needs to happen!
this was definetly the best ERB yet, congrats on co-writing it :D and i kinda find it funny how cam helped write this even tho he did a similar rap battle on his channel years ago
I personally love the lyrics behind Charles Darwin with references to the Galapago Islands and Natural Selection.Hopefully you can help with more battles
After hearing about you from ERB2 I checked this video out and my god amazing. This is better than when I normally just go to ERB meanings online to get any reference I missed. Wish you talked a smidge about Ash Williams I get it. Well can't wait for you to do the Wonder rap battle wich I will be notified about cuz I subscribed. Nice work. Love the little comedy sketches
I love these more than the actual ERB's, is that sad? Either way thank you for doing these, they actually have helped me think of things on a deeper level!
I think that's because I make the matchups about something different! It's almost like Chisel This! is its own content that pits two worlds against each other by using matchups that ERB makes! lol
I really liked the barnacle dick line. Keep in mind I didn't watch the shows or play many of the games. But from my position of not being a huge Pokémon fan it sounds pretty accurate to the kind of burns a 10 year old would be throwing out.
and yeah strongly agree to you: the barnacle dick line was an okay filler line and plain one-time-entertainment-joke but not actually worth it to stop the music. Was expecting more there too. I really like it how I sometimes get some references or ambivalent (right use of the word??) jokes after months of hearing them (Like how almost every phrase from Spielberg in ERB: Spielberg VS. Hitchcock was a reference to movie titles, i just knew two or three of those mentioned movies).
I'm kinda sad you missed my favourite word play this time, "mighty morphin Michael Vick" a refrance to Michael Vick, an NFL athlete who was put in jail for participating in dog fighting. This is even better when followed up on by "your animated slave fights make me sick" best diss.
You know how you talked about the importance of sense stimulating art( does that make sense? ) well when music attends to ears and visuals help the eyes. I hope you point out in the Wonder rap battle that if you use both ear buds or whatever in the beginning of Stevie wonders verse you can here the rhythm of superstition. Kind of like how you pointed out the whole pokemon theme song in the announcement of this battle.
I love your version of the lines for the last part. Descent of PokeMans should be a band name that turns Pokemon songs into metal or hard Rock versions of themselves
Do you still think this is the last season? You predicted in the Tolkien v Martin Chisel This that this would be the last season. I'm curious if your thoughts have changed after "working" with them.
i really enjoyed the battle i like what you pointed out about the stop in the battle i thought they couldve done that better it felt to vague and they could've elaborated on the break a bit more but im glad to see this i was excited when i saw this come up in my feed i immediately watched and im so happy to see you had input on this rap battle and yeah im like becoming a big fan of your material every video more that i watch
G'day Mat4yo great work as always and congrats on being on the creative writing gig with the ERB members, I bet it was cool to contribute and an honor for so ya good one mate :). For me on who won, it has to be Charles Darwin, Ash's bars were alright but Darwin wins by a longshot and I hope that you continue being on the creative writing gig for ERB for future battles.
Another fantastic analysis, Mat! However, I was wondering what you thought of the "packs a much bigger boomstick" line. It felt just a little out of place to me; "Evil Dead" as a franchise (while admittedly a strong horror franchise) pales in comparison with the overall popularity of something like Pokemon. The only connection with either of the rappers is having the same first name as one of them, and I feel the reference might've been a little too obscure for non-horror fans. What do you think?
Fantastic! I loved how depth you added to this rape battle through your analysis. I too am a diehard pokemon fan. I just downloaded Sun last night and can't wait to play it, here in Germany we have to wait until the 23rd, and let me tell you mindnight couldn't come soon enough. what feature or Pokemon are you most excited about from the 7th generation? Personally it's all the Buffs and Nerfs to the 7th generation that I'm most excited about. being a competitive player it sucks that you have to wait so long before the game gets adjusted but finally it feels that the competitive players voices have been heard.
15:25 I feel like they should have said “hello there welcome to the world of earth” just a minor change that keeps it closer to “hello there welcome to the world of Pokémon” Wich it’s based on. When I first saw this battle and heard this line I didn’t think it was related to the beginning of the Pokémon games this change would of made it closer to the original.
That doesn't make too much sense. "The world of Pokémon" is a world where Pokémon exist. But this one is called of Earth, it's not "the world of earth".
I sometimes think that your suggestions for rap battles are just too well thought out, and maybe "too smart". ERB does some simple little rhyme that people enjoy, and your suggested replacement almost requires a college degree because it's so packed with forethought and intelligence. But then like you said, it'd be awesome to have a super intelligent verse, followed by a less awesome verse so that it's always rising and falling.
Mat your lines amazing, as much as I love the current one. I think I also shared the same idea of Darwin being old and despised technology. Oh yeah, I think you forget to mention during Darwin's last line in his first verse, a tone of the trainer battle theme from the original anime/Pokémon Red & Blue can be heard.
So, does this mean you had a part in the Wonder VS Wonder Woman battle? If so, Im so interested in seeing what lines you've come up with now lol. Great Job on becoming a part of this!
I think the mighty morphin Michael Vick line is used that way because of the alliteration and because it gives the idea of the metamorphosis of the animal fights even though it's termed as Pokemon Battles and it sounds more condescending when you use the negative connotation of Michael Vick with the concept of battles which comes together for a pretty good burn on Ash
I'm not a huge pokemon fan, I've got some of the original games but I never watched the series. I probably only got the more obvious references but unlike some people I did get why they were battling. I like your verse explaining more about the differences between actual evolution and pokemon metamorphosis particularly how it won't choose Ash, its a nice throwback to the end of Ash's first verse but I totally get that the verse as you wrote it doesn't fit the ERB style.
So, Mat4yo, would you say you and Cam learned a lot from these guys? I can imagine a lot of the commentary you give here coming back up whenever Cam releases a new VGRB
Absolutely! I've talked about learning so much in this episode as well. I've been exposed to a side of entertainment that I've never experienced before.
Hey Mat, do you think that the Reese pieces line is a reference to Brian Walters' (Ash Ketchum) channel where he reviews candy? Because that's what it seems like to me.
While the line 'Mighty Morphing Michael Vick' does seem to more directly reference Power Rangers. It also carries a pokemon evolution reference; where pokemon become 'Mighty' through their Metamorphosis also correcting pokemon's re-purposing the word Evolution
I get how you feel, Nicepeter once asked for a rap battle with a pirate so I told them they should do Blackbeard vs. Al Capone. They responded to my comment saying they'd probably do it and even put that comment string in the video. I've never seen anyone suggest it before so I think it's a safe bet I caused it, and it's a good feeling seeing it come to life. There's a few things I would've done differently but it was great.
When they mentioned you I binged watched through all of your analysis videos and I enjoyed them, especially the ones I didn't like! In some of them last year you mentioned a top-5 and "bottom"-5 but I couldn't find them. Are you waiting to see if this season is the end of ERB to make them? Btw I really enjoyed and some of your own work apart from the reviews!
About the Reese's Pieces line, I did see someone comment saying that could be a pun on the Rhesus Monkey, but that could be kind of a stretch, especially if that wasn't the original intention of the line.
I was referring to a 6th sense and making fun of myself by suggesting that I'm the only person who would care enough to look this deep into a rap battle video... but here we have thousands of views so I guess people do have that sense huh
I really loved the lines you chose, but weren't used. I think the problem is that your lines are too intellectual for half of their audience. Just watch any reaction to most of the ERBs, even lines that aren't too intellectual or too clever go over their head.
Absolutely right. I think this process is more them helping me learn how to balance both rather than me writing lines. I contribute more conceptually than lyrically
Mat4yo I'm just really glad you got to be a part of it, even if it was more conceptually than lyrically. I'm a huge fan of what you do, and I know you will to continue to grow as a creator. I can't wait to see what the future holds for you.
Hey Mat, nice to see this video! Also, could the Mighty Morphing line be a reference to Pokemon actually morphing instead of evolving as well? Just a random thought I had
Hey which Chisel This episode was it where you said ERB would never bother reaching out to you? I remember that moment, but I can't find the video. I need to know for youtube poop purposes.
Why don't you have millions of subs like these other youtubers. You're such an interesting guy and so intelligently funny. Well maybe because you don't sell out for views. But still bro you're awesome.
you answered your own question, Noah. people who add 1 minute of content to their reactions are the ones that get millions. but they're not the ones that get to write for ERB
Mat4yo I honestly don't even watch ERB lol I enjoy your analysis of their videos much more. You actually give me something. You challenge my mind by me just listening to the things you say. And you teach me something every video. I think you find subliminal meanings in their raps that they didn't even know were there! lol you're just awesome bro. Keep doing what you're doing. I really enjoy and appreciate all of your work, especially your music.
