One of my more favorite quiet scenes between Percy and Vax, at the newly created Raven Queen Shrine in Whitestone. Audio is from Critical Role, episode 64, "the Frigid Doom"
"I do not want to die who I am, I would like to live long enough to be someone else. I think you understand that. I am finished with gods, they will not help me... maybe you will."
Wow! I don't usually picture Percy with such expressive eyes- he's very reserved, and it makes him look more vulnerable... which is totally appropriate for this moment. Excellent work.
I am often very impressed with animation. How do they do this? How do they make things look like they are moving? The fire. His eyes. Is it like Michelangelo who can see the motion, frame by frame, and then simply note it down?
I hope they put this in the TLOVM show. It's easy to miss but it's such an important moment between the 2. Percy losing trust & hope in Gods turns to Vax instead. Vax also took his request to heart.
It's kind of amazing how well this scene encapsulates the entire plot and major themes of Critical Role, especially how everything turned out with the ending. I'm not convinced that Taliesin ISN'T a warlock who made some dark pact to be perfectly poetic and plot omnipotent.
Elani Arkady yeah, there is a lot. but so much of it is out of character comments and conversations (which wouldn't be included if it were made to be a show) and things like combat which take hours to do would be over in under a minute. yeah it would be a lot of work, but the actual amount of show time would be substantially less than the stream
I'm a nonlinear editor and audio engineer. The time to cut out that chatter and piece together the actual conversations, because Matt has been calling them on it would take twice as long as the show to get it and to then leave room for the animators, give it to them, then have a nonlinear editor go over the whole thing would be a full time job for a year at least. Think of a pixar movie taking 5 and that's 2 hours. not that I wouldn't volunteer jumping up and down screaming pick me. It looks like a very well done flash animation. What software did he use?
Elani Arkady that's fair. I didn't actually consider that for it. Critters are a very involved bunch though, what if we were able to round up a bunch of people willing to do the job? how many do you think it would take to turn it into a reasonably sized job?
TrueJunebug go to the end of any pixar movie. Count the audio engineers the nonlinear editors, the colorists, the lighting designers, the continuity editors, animators, see who crosses over cross them off, then cut it in half and hope we're all unemployed and have time. For all of critical role so far... (50 or more people 30 straight animation, 20 straight audio, 10 crossover. ) I'd check their progress in a year. 😊 granted I'm throwing myself into the staff here too and I do have time. Oh and someone to talk to everyone, make sure people still want to do things basically a cat herder. Lol
I love this, truly. The eyes narrowing and squinting and shifting and blinking. The shrugs and head turns. The torch flickering. The changes in the face when they speak!! How natural it seems over lines just miming words! The glasses and Vax's cloak. There's so many little, wonderful, outstanding, beautiful details here. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Beautiful animation! Also, really cool that you managed to use their voices so cleanly. Thankfully there wasn't any crosschat from the rest of the cast in this scene :P
It's Videos like this, that make me feel like rewatching campaign 1, taking my time and not rushing trough it, watching often enough more than 2 episodes per day. To have more time appreciating scenes like this and seeing the characters in a new light with the knowledge I have now. But damn, it's sooo long xD and no matter how much I love critical role, I'm pretty sure I should do something more productive than just watching their videos ^^
wonderfully animated. I especially love the small details, the litle shrugs and side glances. it brings so much more life to the scene. keep up the amazing work.
Sweet holy smite that's fantastic. The only thing different with the scene is that the two of them are talking over a miniature blood pool in the original.
Very cool, you really nailed the expressions! Man was this a strange scene to watch, though. Starts spinning off in a real weird direction basically right after this clip ends...
Holy crap, that was so good! :O One of my fave moments in recent episodes animated... Thank you so much for all the time and effort I'm sure it took to make this! I love your style, there's a lot of facial expression even without dialogue. And your take on the interior of the shrine was super interesting too
This is so great. I would love to see like half an episode or a whole episode done like this. But thats a big under taking. And would have to be a collaboration. Either way I love this!
I didn't really appreciate this gem of a conversation in the original 4 hour video, probably got lost in all the goodness. Thank you for making this animation and pointing it out so beautifully. For me personally this is the best of the CR animations (and there are some good ones out there). What a powerful scene, thanks!
Really hope to see the Vax/Percy brother-like relationship grow in the show. Love how they both almost begrudgingly connect because of how much they're silently keeping to themselves.
tom Hiester I think it's more solemn black and white, and they're in a crypt so it'd be white stone, earthen walls and alot of Shadows. only the flame giving anything a washed out color.
so Id heard of Critical Role but had never watched it, until one day I saw this animation on Tumblr and thought "ok fine I'll check it out", So 6 months after I started im here to say thank you. Keep up the great work.
OMG THE ANIMATION IS PERFECTION! I would love to have How Do You Want to do this scenes to be animated. My god this was fantastic and so simple. THANK YOU!
Holy shit. Really cool seeing this again after watching the show. I kinda miss that hairstyle for Percy, then again this is way later in the campaign so maybe it'll grow. It's a wonderful scene that shows how Percy's handling the situation with Vax and what happened to his sister. I hope this scene makes it in.
