Scanlan interrupts Vex and Percy's nuptials to present his special present. Safe to say that I was a blubbering mess in the end. Taken from the special Dalen's Closet destination wedding One-shot for Critical Role.
"Damnit, Scanlan! We agreed there was a 50 gold piece limit! I got them a toaster! A goddamn toaster!! And you got them a WISH???? Seriously??!?! Come on!!!"
Yeah, Sam said about this to Liam and Matt. I don't think he spoke to anyone else. And there's that thing that Matt just prepared for this narratively and Liam prepared a speech. He even said something along that he would have no words if he was taken by suprise by Sam at that moment. Hell, I imagine if he didn't spoke about it with Matt, it would throw him off briefly too, and the smooth acting moment of this scene would be ruined by laughs.
They confirmed in talks, that Sam had asked both Liam and Matt if it was alright by them to try and use wish for it, so Liam had an idea it was coming. I think he said that he didn't know what to say in the moment tho.
I love the description Liam gave for his shoulder. A piece of him that came from himself and his family, that the RQ had no control over. Now that's some stellar attention to detail
If anyone was allowed to ask a favor from the goddess of death, Scanlan would be the one I would put my money on. He didn't ask to undo death, to circumvent fate. He just asked for a couple of words, a few moments.
@@ShadowyFox_86as a college of lore bard he probably understands better than anyone how bad a wish can be misinterpreted by the world. Many tell tales of items like djinn or monkey paws with catastrophic consequences. I think it fits the character well. A wizard may have put decades of research into the wording of a wish to find a way to alter fate with minimum consequences but scanlans wish is more like a plea to the gods to persuade them
knowing that this is all unscripted and then liam suddenly has to play his old character out of nowhere and he has to make up a speech on the moment. that is skill.
They said in a Talks episode that Sam had pitched this idea to both Matt and Liam beforehand so that it wasn’t sprung on them out of nowhere. But still….whew that ACTING
Scanlan: “It was worth it.” The ability to alter reality however he wished, gone due to a selfless show of his love for both Vex and Vax. To give them one last good bye, to give the party and Vax all one last good bye. It’s truly, truly beautiful.
I noticed that, for such an *apparently* selfish character, both of Scanlan's uses of that particular spell were about as selfless as one could imagine. First, he gives up the Wish spell and (probably) the only chance he had of returning Vax to life in order to save all of Exandria. Then, a year later, he actually casts the spell, expending the only time he's capable of doing so, just to give his friends one last chance to see and speak to Vax. It was rather impressive and something I was always struck by.
@@Jthomas-gg9pi and to clone himself for the last battle with vecna, and to create a chalice for Heroes Feast in Pandemonium, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other uses. He used Wish a bunch, on non-risky castings.
Liam's acting is what truly broke me. The way he spoke, his inflections, the change in his voice...it truly drove home how he is no longer of their world...he's truly become the Champion of the Raven Queen.
The first sentence and how it sort of creeped along each syllable, like he was a ghost, and then warmed up with life as he called Scanlan his friend... Chills, man. Chillllls.
Never noticed the face of "silently suffering" emanating from Marisha here until Laura pushes Liam over to her. Keyleth was prepared to not greet Vax at all for the sake of her friend.
Marisha and Keyleth were both fully willing to let this chance pass by because "its Vex and Percy's day" and all she cared about all episode was making it perfect for them. Keyleth was fully prepared to pass up a chance to talk to Vax because she didn't want to take any time away from the bride and groom. Best Best Man ever
Now I have a mental image of Vax sending her Game of Thrones type ravens with messages every day. “Hey” “You up?” “I’m moving a couch into the ethereal plane, can you come help?”
_ XxDillyDillyxX1 _ honestly he’s so chill, it must’ve been weird as hell to get used to seeing his wife flirt with someone else even though there both in character.
@@damiwayne8289 I don't think it's weird at all. Look at the way Matt's heart breaks for Marisha watching Keyleth talk to the lost love of her life and be broken all over again. It's their characters and it's acting. Their relationships and their friendships allow them to play them so deeply and emotionally. There is no jealousy or envy or awkwardness because they are all so deeply connected as a group.
Evalynn oh no I get that I just mean initially watching your girlfriend flirt with another guy must’ve been weird but yeah I totally agree I loved the relationships in C1 they were really well done and heartfelt.
Honestly I think the most awkward moments have been between Vax and Vex. Like when Vax goes at the end of c1, watch Travis's face every time Liam touches Laura's face
Idk what’s more depressing: Knowing Vax is dead at this point in the Vox Machina timeline or the fact that HE’S GOING TO DIE IN THE VOX MACHINA SHOW AND THAT SHIT IS GOING TO HURT
The poetry of the "Hello, my love... My Home..." line just gets me every time. Because that means the raven is not really visiting Keyleth. He is just coming home for a short while every day.
That’s a DM move if I ever heard one, that’s how fickle Wish can be, and why the wording is so important. Matt is a benevolent DM for sure, he knows how to tell a story.
sean muijlaert Hypothetically, he could. It’s up to Matt. Scanlan said “sisters wedding”. That could mean “sister’s wedding” or “sisters’ wedding”. It’s however Matt would interpret it.......though I suppose it should have then been “sisters’ WEDDINGS”. Wish is truly a messed up spell to cast.
The thing about Wish is that a DM could’ve absolutely fucked that over *easily* . So I’m really glad that it was allowed to go through smoothly for this great scene
I doubt I'm the first to realize this: technically, per the wording of Scanlan's wish, if at some point Velora Vessar gets married, Vax can come back again and say a few words there too. "I wish that Vax'ildan can say a few words at his sister's wedding." Half-sisters are still sisters!
After Vex recognizes the loophole this gives her she starts divorcing and remarrying Percy as often as she can without completely enraging the Raven Queen.
Possibly my favorite Critical Role dialogue, both because of delivery and artfulness - "How am I supposed to get over you if you keep sending Ravens to me?" "I am... imperfect. As are the gods."
@@dtczyk8976 Well, Pike was on the fence until the end, but they always had the awkward dynamic "will they- won't they". Plus Ashley was missing for like half of the episodes, plus Scanlan left the party for a while... It was by far the most longed for relationship lol.
@@bezretmet just wait Mat is going to bring Mollymauk back and all of the mighty nein are going to have a break down over him being brought back then taken away so easily.
@@TheSilverPhoenix100 that would be the most evil thing Matt would do in his entire life and I would be proud. Can you imagine the war in the community!
I'm a truck driver and was listening to the show as I drove across Pennsylvania. Had to stop on an exit ramp during this scene. During the Vex drowning scene I was pounding the steering wheel and yelling for Kylith or Scanlon (not sure of spelling) to hurry the F up. The show's got too emotional to drive during it.
@@johnthaxton9235 I actually listen to it during work myself! My co workers often give me weird looks when I look on the verge of tears while flipping burgers.
I just want to remind everyone of this conversation between Sam and Liam. S: What's like, the WORST thing I can be? L: I don't know man, like.... a gnome.... bard. S: I'll be THAT. THIS WAS HIS FIRST CAMPAIGN.
MoonRune generally in DnD when you die your soul is shunted into the plane of the extraplanar being you worshipped or is destroyed. He just happened to come in with some seniority.
Apparently Vax claims the souls of all the major major villains especially ones that would have been disliked by the Queen so if they ever need him for an occasion u just catch some CR 16~ baddie and execute him on christmas and there, Vax gets to participate no biggie for stacked level 20 party Might be bit awkward with the kids around but sam can conjure some mosaics.
@@roticet Depends on how jelly of her Raven Queen is. And yes between a cleric, bard and druid there is a lot of fuckery they could do if the soul was not willingly sold to a god of death. I mean they still could, but boy does dieing become a scary perspective.
@@kopkaljdsao well, considering she seems to be nonchalant in terms of their relationship, things should be fine, just as long as they dont try to rez Vax. The raven queen seems to take great offense to that at best of times depending on if Matt is using D&D lore. At least the bits I've read. Plus with Vax being the raven queens champion, if there was a significant enough threat to her portfolio, I could see her bringing Vax "out of retirement"
spoilers: he saved a wish to save his friend, but used it to save the world. then he used his last wish to give a priceless gift to his best friends. scanlan is truly the mvp of exandria.
@@XpVersusVista Tal'Dorei is a continent, Exandria is the world. Just like with Campaign 2 of CR, it takes place on Wildemount, another continent in Exandria.
@@fluffy_walrus definitely still true that he saved the world though, if Vecna had ascended, do you really think his reach would spank only across the one continent? Ot would spread to the whole world and possibly others
@@LRMRULES I wasn't responding to dedf15, I was responding to a now deleted post by a different user that was asking if exandria was a continent like wildemount, or if it was the world. Don't worry, I'm fully of a mind that Scanlan's a living legend for all Exandria, he was my favourite of Vox Machina
This is even sadder if your remember that Keyleth will live for 10 times as long as the others, and she’ll be the last one left for a long time. Edit: I should clarify, as enough people are still confused. Druids get Timeless Body at level 18. This reduces aging rate by 1/10. The Monk version of Timeless Body does not affect aging rate.
This was so well done, man. Scanlan showing again why hes the goat. Also, I imagined this animated: As Scanlan casts the wish you can almost see a visible bit of pain flash across his face and thats when the power to cast wish is lost. Yet, he says nothing, and just smiles.
@@Sacromancer Sam makes a d20 roll, the result of which is 16 or 17, when he clarifies with Matt you see him flip through the PHB and nod in affirmation.
Scanlan's gift might have been delayed a year since the fall of Vecna, but he did what he set out to do, if only for the briefest of moments, the party was whole once more.
And as beautiful as the entire scene/moment is what broke me the most was Sam... Because a man that gave up everything to save the world turned and almost it seems with a sigh of a weight long carried breathed "...I'll cast wish..."
The same music from Vax's death scene in the Epilogue... Mercer definitely planned that, speaking as a DM who uses musical themes for each player in my campaign
Of course all 3 had to know. Sam had to have talked to Matt to confirm if it was possible. And even if it wasnt originally allowed, Matt would have let it happen, for the RP, the Story, and us.
Joseph Mead makes sense. That song has become attached, if ever so slightly, to his passing. Playing the song would bring back those feelings and help everyone, Liam especially, get in character for seeing Vax once more.
I think Matt probably had an idea that it would happen. Even if it wasn’t discussed, the way Sam described in Talks Machina after the original episode that he would have used Wish only to buy a little time, and not cancel the deal with the RQ. Matt isn’t dumb, he knew Sam would try it.
On Talks Machina, they actually confirmed that Sam texted both Liam and Matt in advance to A) make sure Matt was prepared for the possibility, and B) to make sure Liam was okay with it, so that he wasn't completely caught off guard in case it worked! I'm inclined to believe that the music was very intentional and that Matt was absolutely ready for it, which just makes it even better.
I love that when Scanlan casts wish, he gets all soft spoken and a little airy, like he’s aware of the gravity of such a spell and perhaps his third eye has opened to allow the magic.
A big part of that is because he had wanted to use a Wish to save Vax from having to die after Vecna's defeat, but he had to use the spell slot he was saving to do it, and that *devastated* him
Vax may have managed a nod or wink. I suspect Gilmore would be OK with that, because he knows the bigger story and isn't likely to make a stink. If Vax managed a wink, Gilmore probably smiled and winked back. Nothing more needed to be said. 😎
*Scanlan casts Wish to bring Vax back for a little bit* Vax: Still toying with the designs of the gods, I see... Raven Queen: I'll allow it. In all seriousness, did anyone else think of that meme during this scene?
My uncle passed away suddenly last week and it was an utter gut punch. This could not be more appropriately timed for me dealing with his loss. “As long as all of your hearts are beating, I will live within them, and my love will never dim”
When you realise that Vax's black raven mask is an accident because Liam thought that he was the big figure with the mask and you don't care because the mask is so cool
Yeah I think it's a cool accidental detail, as a parallel to the Raven Queen's own white mask. Not entirely discarding his own past identity but still he's first and foremost the Raven Queen's champion now.
Scanlan’s “but it was worth it.” broke me down to tears. He had godlike power through the Wish spell. And he knew that he risked losing it to give his friends that last moment with their brother.
The callback to the boots was what defines why Vox Machina/Mighty Nein are so amazing at what they do. Emotionally-draining 10-minute long scene, then BAM! Callback to something that happened almost 3 years ago that became a running joke that made you smile out of nowhere. Absolutely the best.
Y'all are in for one rollercoaster of a ride when you finally do listen to campaign 1. My advice is to keep a box of Kleenex close by and a stress ball or something you don't mind destroying in anger handy.
Yeah, Sam had talked to Matt and Liam beforehand to make sure it was possible to do...and that Liam wouldn't be completely taken off guard and could prepare something.
This was Vex’s gift from Scanlan but she so selflessly gives like half the time to Vax and Keyleth so they can have a moment as well, I love her for that (and for a million other reasons).
@@acolytetojippity Everytime you cast a wish spell there is a 33% chance you cannot cast it again. Sam rolled after this and unfortunately did not roll well enough, I think Matt said it had to be 14 or under i could be mistaken, but he rolled a 17, this losing the spell.
Man, I'm so bummed I had to go to sleep and missed the last hour of the stream because I bet the chat went BANANAS when this happened. Also, the fact that this was Scanlon's last Wish is terrifically perfect.
I can only imagine what it would be like to live long periods of time and have every one of the party die off as you live for centuries. (Talking about Keyleth). Grog would be the first to go seeing as goliaths don't live as long as the rest. But after the many years, just having everything become a distant memory... It's rough.
“I'm old enough to know that a longer life isn't always a better one. In the end, you just get tired; tired of the struggle, tired of losing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything you love turn to dust. If you live long enough, Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you'll end up alone.” -The Doctor
Well the way I’d like to think about it is like Magnus Bane from the mortal instruments. He saves SOMETHING from every best friend and lover and puts in a box so that when he misses his old friends and lovers he can look at stuff from them and remember them. That’s what I imagine KeyKey and the others who live long lives in the group did. I think Vex would have had something made that reminds her of each of her friends and Percy, and go back to that thing when she missed them. Like her holy symbol, Pike would wear something that she can look at when she misses them, etc. I imagine Percy doesn’t keep anything, but he visits the Whitestone raven queens temple and talks to Vax every chance he gets. Grog probably visits the outside of the raven queens temple in vasselheim and talks to Vax whenever he’s there.
I immediately looked at the video title and was scared it was something inappropriate and instead Scanlan is being a dude and giving Vex what she wants.
This is just a reminder that yeah these guys joke around and give each other crap each session, but they are still incredible actors. Regardless of if it's mostly voice work. Honestly that just makes it harder, having to breath life and emotion into a role without being able to use your facial expressions, only your voice, is an incredible talent. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to grab some tissues and resume crying uncontrollably.
What's even more amazing, is the way Scanlan worded the wish, TECHNICALLY, Vax will also be allowed to show up at Velora's wedding (should she decide to get married) seeing as Scanlan never specified which sister :)
Man if that's gonna be the last time you ever get to use a spell I can think of no better use of it! also i'm once again reminded that Kiki will out live them all by several centuries
Even besides Scanlan's gift, why am I so emotionally invested in 2 character's in a game, played by people, one of whom is married to someone else at the table, renewing their wedding vows. Even Laura seems to be getting choked up about this in game wedding, of her character marrying her friends character while her real life (and awesome) husband and father of her child watches. And Talisen has to put a hand out to comfort Marisha because she's emotional at the entrance of her Character's Love while her husband watches them.
"¿How am I supposed to get over you if you keep sending ravens to me?" This hits me so hard... Specially having gone through break ups were I saw at every moment something that reminded me of her.
When I started watching this show I never imagined that a group of people roleplaying could EVER make me bawl like I am now. I've never been happier to be wrong.
Aside from the somber tone that’s making me cry, I like the way Ashley smiles when Liam describes Cordyceps fungus looking things on him. Then you remember The Last of Us and smile
